I like the UI overall. I only have a few probs with it
- better font. in my right clicks it cuts off characters below the line making a 'g' and 'q' indistinguishable
- I'd like a better way to access bookmarks. The multiple right click menus off the background are a hassle, and the people and places screen is too much real estate. Maybe a clicky on the neocom that would open a box with bookmarks for the current system then rightclick to activate one then the bookmark window closing would be great, along with a hotkey for the bookmark box.
- the overview gets desynched for me very often lately and leaves random ships in it that are not near me.

The overview gets screwed up (distances not updating) way too easily. This problem occurs a ton when doing 'show info' on people in system as we cruise from system to system. Once it occurs, it generally requires logging off/on to fix it, or (if lucky) docking and undocking.

Originally by: Agillious I understand that this can be accomplished in the current overview with different saved settings. I haven't had much luck in quick changing what is displayed on my overview, however.
Works like an absolute charm here - I've weeded out a few unused overview presets recently and am now down to just seven which I use regularly.

Tho I can see why ppl dont agree with the original posters ideas, I dont get why ppl have to jump at him and get personal.....
Changing the looks of the UI doesnt have to equal nerfin it/making it worse. And if ppl could choose which to use, it wouldnt really be a problem would it.

Edited by: Scorpyn on 31/03/2006 00:26:29 Removing the overview would only work in either very small pvp fights or when npcing. Needless to say, I want it to stay, but I'd prefer if it was in the top right corner and not a bit below/to the left (although that could potentially make it difficult to use with some monitors).
The suggested round thingy up in the right corner looks good, but those buttons are usually not urgent and setting it to autohide works wonders except when you want to run in windowed mode, at which point it suddenly becomes very difficult to access it.
The right-click menues are sometimes too fast in switching for my liking, which can be annoying when you want to get out of a dangerous situation. The left bar should however disappear almost instantly when I remove my mouse from it imo, which is not the case right now.
The start conversation option is not in a good place when trying to do show info on the locals. More than once have I accidentally started convos because of that.
The overview bug(s) need to be removed, and there should be more difference between the cruiser and the battleship icon. It's great for npcs, but the difference is a bit too small for pvp.
I prefer the current system for active and non-active locked targets, but they should make more rows before intruding on the system data text in the top left corner. Moving them to the left part of the screen would interfere strongly with being able to set up your chat channels, so it's not really a good option imo.
The stop/full speed buttons are too small for my liking, but other than that I like that part of the ui. The cpu/power grid usage is information that I rarely use though, so it should be toggleable (perhaps it already is, I haven't checked actually). Moving it to the far right of the screen wouldn't really work as the overview needs to be there, and moving it all the way to the left would interfere with the way most ppl set up their chat channels. Very few ppl actually have just 1 chat window open, and if they do they will quickly find out why it's a bad idea when they join a 0.0 alliance.
The system information about system name, nearest object etc is actually important even though it may not seem like it at a first glance. Unless you're extremely familiar with your surroundings, or you're not in hostile space, you want it - trust me. It's one of those things that you probably wouldn't consider important until it was gone.

we said the same thing in myth of soma when ver 2.00 came out about how we had to hold shif down for runing, every one hateted it, but after a month or so we all forgot that it was thier and it was the norm,
i also was on eve more that 2 years ago and compared to that ui this ones quite a bit better than it was then,

I feel I need to point out a flaw with this statement. Good design is defined as having functionality. So the implication that functionality should be a secondary concern to good design (due to good design bringing functionality) is false.
Personally, I prefer to say "A functional design is a good design" especially after my experience with Master of Orion III (beautiful interface, but horrible in comparison to EVE due to a lack of functionality). |

My two cents.
Display player standings on the portraits in local chat like this example:
Allow to lock movement of modules in ship overview. Sometimes in battle when I am try activate module by mouse, I move him to another place.

hmm. both ideas are pretty good. Like them.
as to the op: NO. Eve is about functionality, otherwise you can't grasp the complexity of the game. The UI as it is now might not be the prettiest, but it's very very good at its job.

I disagree on the first point, as that'd make it too easy to see hostiles in local imo (ie it would be another pirate/soloer nerf).
I fully agree on the 2nd point however, that happens to me aswell every now and then. _____________________________________ meep meep |

Edited by: Joerd Toastius on 31/03/2006 10:26:21 I see the "too easy" argument, but I don't buy it. The only "difficulty" atm is a boring, repetative task which seems to be fairly hard work on the server. This is the kind of thing that needs to be eliminated IMO, even if it does make things marginally easier. In lightly-populated systems you're aware of anyone arriving instantly anyway, and in any system where you have to scroll to see everyone, you still need to keep an eye on the actual number present and scroll every time the number changes. All that adding icons does is prevent you from having to actually do right click > show info on everyone, which is as above boring, repetative and laggy.
And yeah, I've been asked by an FC for an accurate hostile count in local when there's 450 in system before. That really isn't fun under the current regime.
{edit} To summarise, difficulty should come from mental challenges, not from fighting the interface. The former is fun. The latter is just frustrating.

CCP has stated that they won't put tags on people in local, because it would make it too easy to spot targets.
I don't agree with this, but its what they said.

CCP have also been known to change their minds, and I think this is one of the cases where they should have a rethink. If they want to make target detection hard they should at least come up with a less boring and repetitive mechanic for it. Doing hostile reports in high-population systems gives you carpal tunnel.

I don't believe it was mentioned but my Windows taskbar has an auto-hide feature that I think would be a nice option to add to the Eve UI.
Another thing would be fading UI. Can't name any off the top of my head but some console games don't show your health unless you're injured, the health meter goes away if you're at full-health, providing you with a better view of the game. Some things could fade out I guess. Not fully, mind you, but to the point of near transparency, the level of which would be another option that'd be cool.

The UI is great, to be honest. My only requests would be to sort out hte overview standings bugs, and make that more smooth, to FREEZE the overview when holding control so you dont mis-target due to distances updating, to be able to remove NEUTRALS from the overview, and to have better ICONS in the overview - more distinguished icons between cruiser and bs, unique icons for destroyer/BC sized vessels (small circle for destroyer, bigger circle for BC) and special ones for capital ships. For example, for a Carrier, the large BS Square but with a little drone inside, for a dread, the bs square but with 3x thicker lines, mothership the dreadnaught icon but with a drone inside, and for titan a totally filled in square. Freighter would be the indy rectangle, but with 3x thicker lines.

I don't know why those common annoyances slipped my mind. You're right though, they need to fix the bugs in our current UI before investing time into another.

aye
and tbh there are players who found out how to make their own "marker", working, easy to use, and prolly an exploit ...

Edited by: Iron Wraith on 31/03/2006 15:44:36 Edited by: Iron Wraith on 31/03/2006 15:43:46 u mean adding hostiles to the buddy list? its an ok work arround for flying in low sec. useless for alliances though . i'd hate to think how many hostiles we have worked into our standings.
problem when your working with corps flagged as hostile (be it standings or war targets) is u dont know every corp member. so while u can add a lot to ure buddies list ure gonna miss ones u havent seen before.
could really do with a proper implimentation into the UI. and yes i know about the local argument. but is there any reason not to flag players who are talking in local as hostile or friendly?
edit: unless ure refering to the method that violates the eula. very sneaky idea but for me its not worth loosing my account over.

I don't agree with this, but its what they said.
But it already is that easy to spot targets in local. Most people I play with only put enemies in their buddy list. First thing you do when entering a system is look for green dots in local. Green dot=enemy/target. What could be easier? If CCP added standings flags to local it really wouldn't change much since it's already that easy. It would just make it easier to spot friends at that point, and you wouldn't have to fill up your buddy list with enemies.

The UI is usable by all means, but I'm a spoiled WoWer, and I want to have complete control over the UI. I don't mean I want to be able to hide anything and move anything, but I want to be able to change ANYTHING about the UI.
Don't like the style of the chat window? I want to be able to give it a new texture. Want a hotkey for something that can't be binded? I want to be able to make that binding. Don't like the fact that module buttons are circle? I'd like to make them square, or even semicircles, or triangles, or...anything, really.
The fact is that the UI should be modifiable in every aspect, whilst the actual game itself is left undone. Since we don't really have any leveling, I like to have an option to display my current skill in training and such. I want to make the UI as cluttered or as clean as my heart desires, and that is a fundamental flaw of this game.
