According to the backstory, the pod pilot community, i.e the real players, are a minority in eve, numbering a few hundread thousand.
We seem to be alone in the galaxy, however, because I don't see any non-pod pilot ships milling around, except the odd hauler/trader NPC and ofc faction navys/concord.
Surely there are non-pod based pilots who want to go and mine stuff, or run missions or something?
where are they all??

They are all planetside for R&R, because that's waaaaaay more fun than flying around in space.
And no, you cannot join them, because I have claimed all planets as my sovereign domain and made it impossible for you to land there.

A pod you need to fly a ship.

You don't need a pod to fly a ship. Pod pilots are a minority. ---------------------------------

I'd always assumed that whilst pod pilots were the minority, they were also much more able to 'do the space thing'. So whilst planets and space stations are heaving with normals, space is far more expensive and difficult, and they're horrifically outclassed, so they don't tend to bother. -- We are recruiting

arent most populations planetside still. Space is pod pilots pirates and navies of the various races. Oh concord and interbus haulers as well. And drones that consume everything until u blow em up several times a day.
5000 ppl pilot a battleship so each battlehsip u loose u also loose 5000 non cloned crew. With the various losses thats quitea bit even cruisers take 100 odd crew battlecruisers i assume take like 1000-2000 crew members.
Dreadnaughts would take 10000-15000 crew and carriers similar amount - then we look at titans mini stations and perhaps with a crew compliment of 50000 crew = 200000 crew members

There was a thread a while back about seeing NPC cruise liner ships around gates and stations and I think it was a good idea. It would add more life to the galaxy other than the place looking like a police state with sentery guns and police ships everywhere.
And no, not all ships need pods to fly them. The NPC trader ships are not pod controlled, the fleet ships are not pod controlled, pirate ships are not pod controlled and I would imagine there are planatery entery vehicles that act as shuttles that are not pod flown either. I would imagine that there are such things as mining ops too that are not pod pilot opperated but I guess we don't see them appart from the pirate haulers. I would like to see other npc factions in roid belts in low sec like the pirates too.
And maybe npc ships moving between star systems through the gates too between different stations in different systems. ------

Usually people who can't use pods stay on planets and stations and leave space for us. The NPC haulers might be non-pod, as well as some pirate ships (not all as some of the pirate logs speak of pods. Some on the other hand mention the pilot not having a clone contract)

Once Chuck Norris became a pod pilot, most others were not required. Hence, their rarity.

Chuck Norris doesn't need to point. He can direct your awareness for you.

It would be nice if they could throw some traffic onto our screens - just the usual civilian stuff - trucks and taxi's.
They could make it all client side non collidable, not really there kind of things and let you turn them off in the graphics options. Would like to see more neon signs too, definitley more neon signs.

Need a pod Chuck Norris does not. Nor a ship for that matter. Nor weapons. Mostly he just stares enemies down. If necessary he closes to contact range and gives them a roundhouse kick. This always causes a node crash.
Actually non-pod pilots are present in vast numbers. They have advanced anti-detection systems and cloaking devices so we can't see them. It would depress us to see their luxurious and palatial ships. Some are known as GMs and are immensely powerful.
