Grid exploit doesn't exist. It's simply a flaw in the game. A solar system is divided by imaginary lines called "grids". I don't know exactly how it works but as far as I know, when you are in one grid, you can't see a person in the next grid visually.
This usually isn't a problem because the grids are so large it doesn't matter. However in Fountain, there's a jumpgate that was put on a grid border, and it's buggy as hell. You pretty much can't visually see other people there, it's just all messed up.
The whole grid "exploit" came into play because well, Fountain knew about their buggy jumpgate, so they figured that would be a good spot to go once a battle broke out, they went to camp it, deployed their drones, and waited for us, figuring it would be a nice trap.
We (sin/m0o) didn't know about it, we warped in.. but Fountain forgot something, we use scanners to target in battle. Scanners will detect ships either way, even if they are on a different grid. We won the battle, destroyed their ships, took no losses, and after another battle at one of their stations, where we once again defeated them with no losses, we left.
Next day they are crying we used an exploit on them, the "grid exploit". CCP even put up a news peice saying not to exploit that grid! OKAY!
It was totally stupid and just another case of Fountain complaining that they could not beat us. I'm sure about 10,000 fountain dorks will jump all over this thread to say how we cheated or something but honestly, what I've said is the truth.
They simply choose to believe their lies, I guess.

Well, an exploit is taking advantage of a flaw in the game, Jim, so it could well BE "the grid exploit".
Someone, who shall remain nameless, was banned just recently for using this exploit.
P.S: You were dead right about the Scorpion having 4 launchers. I cleared cache and it popped right up. Pesky game.

To be honest, Jim's version of events has a ring of truth about it.

Stavros,
Why do you want to know?
It wasn't anyone (in)famous or even a (in)famous corp.

Well, I can confirm that this problem exists on at least one other gate, but as far as I know, no one has EVER used this. A friend found it quite strange when he launched his drones, and suddenly some of them "disappeared". So we obviously found another gate where this problem exists.

This is very annoying when hunting NPC's, because if you go back into the other grid and try to target the ships you had targeted before they disappeared, you can no longer target them.

Just one question Jim, what is the advantage of using scanner to target, instead of just pointing at something on the screen?

Someone 20km away with 8 drones deployed = really freaking hard to target their ship, it all overlaps. It's just way easier to open your scanners and find targets.. ------

FYI the grids are about 400k x 400k. I too think Jims story has a ring of truth about it. I wouldn't trust FA or SA as far as I could kick them - pirates are reasonably predictable and honest, however.
