Edited by: StealthNet on 14/09/2003 13:06:51 Well we could do a list or something because there are lots of useless modules.
Cap boosters are somewhat funny: great idea, useless impl. They should get a bigger capacity (at least double). BTW why they use so much pwrgrid ?
Invul Fields are somewhat useless if you want to use them as intended. If you want to use them as a "tanking" config along with other tacs, than that's ok ... so next patch, bye bye
Damage Controls... what ?
Flux thingies... oh well, get a somewhat shield boost, but loose lots of cap... something you want your enemy to use
Projectiles... (they are trying to fix them, good )
ECM Bursts...

Yup, energy vampires are a waste of time, only possible use I can see for one is on a frigate to boost your cap using a high slot - won't do anything significant to the enemy though. Energy neutralisers work reasonably well if you have enough of them, but even they could do with a bit of a boost and energy vampires need a big boost to be useful.
Those things that protect the hit points of modules are pretty pointless too.

Energy Vampires and Survey Scanners. With the horrible 5K range of the survey scanner, by the time you can scan it you see it. What good is it. The skill Survey adds speed, not range. What good is that? Who really cares how fast they can scan in a 5K range?
Survey scnaners need to start at 10K and the Survey skill needs to add +5K per level for the Survey scanner to be any use at all.

Survey scanners tell you how dense the rock is. That's about it for usefulness. I['d much rather take my chances, and fit something else in that valuable med-slot.
Energy vampires/drain/unstable energy modules/nosferatu/etc.. Now there's an excercise in worthlessness.. I agree with yall totally!!
Ya gotta get right up next to the target pretty much, and the energy drained/transferred is pathetic.
A small boost in range and energy tranferred/drained would make them more useful.
Right now, Nosferatu is just a small source of megacyte for me. :)

True. But it's not very effective... And after all, drones are mainly used for 2 reasons; lag and missile defence.

I disagree about survey scanners... knowing how much ore is in the asteroid makes a huge difference instead of mining to find out it only has 50 units of whatever in it, then finding the whole field's like that.
Agreed about the vamp mods, those are utterly useless. Cool effect though, just everything else about it sucks.

Well, try to lauch missiles with drones around you... And watch your missiles explode on the drones and cause splash damage on your own ship...
Even if you burst the drones so they return to their owner, they will still be between you, so your missiles will hit his drones without reaching your enemy..

Most useless modules:
Bronze medal: Shield transmission devices: Range way too short, needs to be cut in half (half the effect, half the cap drain, half the activation cycle).
Silver medal: Energy neutralisers: Not too efficient, drain a lot of cap. This makes it only useful for ships that don't use cap in normal operation (ie, heavy projectile or missile oriented ships). Whoever, such ships usually will try to strike at a range of about 20 km, and the energy neutralisers only reach at 12 km.
Gold medal: Energy Vampires (Nosferatu, Ghoul, etc): Way too little drain, activation cycle way too long. range way too pathetic.

The survey scanner was a really neat item to use in the first few weeks of the game. For those who don't know, moving the cursor over the asteroid wouldn't tell you what type of ore it had. People would use these scanners so they could search for specific asteroids in a 5km radius. If you didn't have a scanner back then, then you needed to either know what the roid looked like, or right click on it and say "show info". When this changed and the information showed up on the cursor, the survey scanner became useless --------------------------- (c) Copyright Saladin, 2005. Survey scanners aren't useless - they own. I mean you almost need them nowadays with the baby respawn roid "problem", you have to check the asteroids before you mine them to see if it's worth to do it. Especially when you mine bistot. What do you mean with "by the time you can scan it you see it"? It's impossible to see how many ore units an asteroid contains without a survey scanner.

Definately energy vampires.
Increase the range to 5km, the drain to 20 (leave the reward at 10), and reduce the reuse timer to 20 on the Nosferatu I and balance the other items around that.
They will still be useless on thier own, but it would give room for dedicated vampire ships in a fleet.
Maybe giving the energy emissions systems skill some kind of bonus that actually improves thier effectiveness too, I don't know.
A lot of modules are useless because of thier abysmal ranges. Even in a frigate, it's hard to keep within 1km (sometimes less) of a target for any length of time unless both targets are motionless.

---------------
And on the most useless item award:
1.) Damage control - AFAIK noted damage has -zero- effect on modules, they cannot be destroyed nor do they work with less effeciency when damaged
2.) Energy vamps - Perhaps - *perhaps* - useful if you wage war with lvl1-lvl2 frigates. Perhaps useful for anything bigger with 10 times the range and 25-50 times the cap stolen.
3.) structure hull mods - less speed and a little more structure (which perhaps gives you 5 seconds more in a battle) - anyone wasting low slots with that crap?

I'm not so sure they're crap... I don't know what the exact stat is, but I've got a few modules with +10% to struct. With the current stacking... 4800*1.2 = 5760 (Megathron hull HP + skill) 1.331*5760 = 7666,56 hp A total of almost 2000 HP extra for using up three lowslots. they do crap damage for a start.
also when you drop them your ship stops moving.. very annoying if you try to orbit something to cover it in mines!
Also theres only two prints on the market... broke methinks. there should be the prints for cobra, python, anaconda.. i forget the others.
Anyway.. like missiles, thermal, kinetic, explosive.. etc etc.
One other thing thats up with them, the icons for them all look the same, when the red dot in the center should be a different color, like for missiles.
Oh.. and target one sometime.. the icon that shows in the target lock ring looks like a rocket for some reason :/

Explosion/Heat/Kinetic/Magnetic Amplifiers.

Obviously Nosferatus are near the top of the list.
The current stats on drain MIGHT make sense for an EW ship if the range were vastly improved. (20-30k).
I would like to see the following for Nosferatus: Two types: Short range (5-10k) with high drain, and long range (20-30k) with low drain. (Same idea as the two different warp jammer types - One has a strong jam and low range, the other has half the jamming strength and much longer range.)
In addition to that, have small/medium/large varieties. The current Nosferatus will make a difference on a frigate (<2.5 cap/second), but will be pointless on a cruiser. So there should be a medium Nosferatu with higher power/CPU reqs (albeit less than most medium guns) and double the drain rate.
Nosferatus used to be 10 cap every 40 seconds from what I remember, now that's been bumped up to 45. I think 2 cap every 8 seconds or 5 every 20 for the "small" variant would be better. For the "medium" variant, same drain in half the time. ------------ Ezra Cornell pe0n, Xanadu Corporation |

I wanted to be more of an EW guy, as my gunnery skills suck, but after rigorous testing on corp mates, I am forced to use guns, as all the high slot EW is completely useless, I cant even wound a ship before i am blown up. - Roid scanners - I have a secret way to "judge" ores, some may know this, but it works from any range, as long as you can see it, no scanner needed. The scanner gets the exact number, but I am usually within a couple hundred, so who cares. They should work at around 30km to be effective, the point is they should save you from having to get within mining range, not closer. ---------------------- There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people. |

There are energy neutralizers that will suck an Amarr battleship dry of cap in a very short amount oftime. No cap, no ammo for lasers. Also they're the best way to tame a wild Scorpion.
Toss one on a Minmatar ship with projectile weapons. So not "ALL" are useless.

Energy Vampires - too short a range, too small a draine, too long a recyle time.
Ship scanners: range way to short to ever be used.
Roid scanners: range way too short, again. In the time it took you to get within 5 km of all the roids you could have manually checked them out.
Medium slot shield recharge rate boosters. Shields recharge far too slow anyway.
Low slot shield power relays. Great item. You can reduce cap recharge so you can increase shield recharge rate. Nevermind it is thousands of times more efficient to reduce shield recharge rate and just use a shield booster.
For that matter flux anything is pretty bad :D You can usually find a better item in the power relay stuff.
Those passive medium slot shield resist boosters. Why use those when you could use a tactical shield and get way more benefit?
Damage Control Systems. Doesn't matter how damaged your stuff gets right now, seemingly.
Cap boosters: Take up way, way, too much space to be practical.
Medium Shield Extenders. Takes too much powergrid for too small a return. No contest over whether you should run a tac shield, or a shield extender.

my vote goes to the new to arrive mobile refineries, as they are presented on chaos at the moment. (check patch-channel)

GM "illegal" corpses.
not like they are tech V corpses that can blow up a ship in one hit if you throw them at someone.

Essentially, since shield recharge rate is inherently so low compared to cap recharge + shield booster, ANYTHING that affects shield capacity or recharge rate is useless.
As to passive shield resist modules - They have an extremely valuable use, although it doesn't involve being fitted to a ship. :) Hint: 40 m3 of minerals used to produce a 5 m3 item. ------------ Ezra Cornell pe0n, Xanadu Corporation |
