Eve already has the ability to have all this. You got a sandbox, now use it.
So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak. |

0.0 is not a dueling arena, its just a free for all.
There are many people that want to pvp, but they dont want to be wtfpwned by a ganksquad that jumps on their *** the moment they engage a target.
Actually dueling in 0.0 would be like trying to 1on1 in the middle of a battlefield. and ontop of that, finding a good match is extremely hard. Especially when you are a noob, dont try to tell me a merlin Vs some T2 uber frigate is a good matchup.
Ccp should just do this, it takes nothing away from your precious 0.0.

Edited by: Lord WarATron on 04/04/2006 09:32:42 It appears nobody listens to my comments on how you can dual ANYONE, ANYWARE without sec loss or changing corps. I must have posted this about 3 or 4 times already :)
Do this.
Organise into 2 gangs.
1. Gang 1 drops 100 Bookmarks in a can 2. First member of gang 2 takes bookmark from can. 3. all members of gang 1 do a 1 shot on the first member of gang 2 so you all have aggro to all. 4. Repeat setps 2-3 with the rest of the gang members of gang 2.
This way, you can organise fleet battles or 1v1 duals anyware without secloss thanks to RMR can flagging. I have done many a dual, and many a fleet battle with the above method when I was in my Previous corp. --- Slot 10 Akemons Modified 'Noble'Zet 5000 implant +8% Armour FREE |

The idea is sound if excuted well. It would encourage new(by) players into PVP, to get their feet wet so to speak. With more PVP skills new players will feel more confident, and perhaps even move into 0.0...

Some sort of sport aside from the racing would be cool in Eve. We had a tournament between the alliances not long ago and it was a lot of fun putting some bets on and watching the vids.
Maybe an instanced system with x number of live viewers who pay to watch via camera drones. Add a betting system and plenty of fun. Full ship loss but no podding. Pre set match requirements (cruiser vs cruiser, 5 frigates vs BS, etc) and some form of ranking. New Eve profession Gladiator and Arena star.
Sure all this can be done to a degree but it's all too exploitable and betting is small scale. I reckon a pro-sport style arena in Eve would be cool.
I doubt it will ever detract from the combat PvP, after all territory still needs to be fought over. We are lacking a grand spectacle though.

I am not sure what the resistance to this sort of thing is tbh. I agree that there should'nt be any 'carebear' pvp where you cannot lose your ships but what exactly is bad about an offical game mechanic that allows for tournaments/arena type affairs?
To the people who say "go to .0" and similar: I am in a PvP alliance and the majority of my PvP experience is either hunting n ganking targets in a small gang or huge blob standoff's (*yawn*). Nine times out of ten if our gang comes across a similar sized KOS gang they turn tail and run, making us spend alot of time playing cat and mouse. I am not whineing about this, its the way it is, however I would love to be able to just jump on EVE and get some PvP in without having to find/organise a hunting gang or run around trying to find a solo player I could have a decent fight with.
As I suspect many corps do, my corp occasionally runs frig 1v1 knockout tournaments with a prize for the winner and I cannot think of a good reason why having these run by agents/npc&player corps/etc would be a 'bad' thing. An example:
Caldari Navy Capsuleer T1 Frigate 1v1 Arena Agent (in space, in a suitable setting) Contestants would 'sign-up' to the agent, once X no of contestants has been reached a fairly short betting period would begin whilst the contestants warp to the arena BM they have been given. Once this is over pairs of players are matched and fight to ship destruction (no podding, no warping out?) and the contest carries on until only the winner is left in his ship. The winner then takes a prize and bets are paid.

Anything that allows me to duel with a roughly equal opponent, that didnt take a hour to find, has to be a good idea.

EVE Veterans might laugh at this idea but most people dont venture into 0.0 too many times because they think they suck at pvp and think they have no chance in hell vs the more skilled pilots that live in 0.0.
Practice vs corp mates is not good enough, theres a good chance that a player with low pvp experience will be in a corp with many other people that also have low pvp experience. A place to practice vs other oponents outside thier corp would generate courage and give a chance to pick up the survival basics needed. Would also help people see that they are not as bad as they think they are. The end result may be more 'carebears' venturing into 0.0
I think whats needed is a small area where its possible to lose ships in 'practice battles' or duels but pod kills are not allowed, also screw killboards, in this area there are no kill mails awarded, on the other hand this might pull some people away from 0.0 to spend time in these places and I know CCP wont want that at all, so it may never happen :)

The whole point of the arena is that only the arena fighters can interact with each other. Sorry, no blobs. I'm talking spectator sport not warfare. Instancing allows the load to be taken away from the host system and in this scenario has no negative effects on game play.
It's not that different in practice to the alliance tournament where the combatants were whisked off to a closed system by the GMs. That was a tournament BoB had no issue competing in at the time as I recall, in fact didn't BoB win it? So if you had no issue with that what is the big deal with this?

Edited by: Nev Clavain on 04/04/2006 12:30:14 I have to say this thread has generated some good posts on one side (that is the argument for duelling) and on the other side has generated nothing but retarded eve powergamer posts, calling people 'kiddies' for wanting a duelling system. To answer that point - people who call other people 'kiddies' online, are usually in their teens themselves, and play online games so much to escape from the horrific reality that is their life.
If you don't like duelling lets have some proper arguments against it, not just 'nothx WOW sux kthxbye'
No one is talking about turning eve in WOW. INstancing isnt even required for this. If you can't portray your point of view contructively you should just shut the hell up.
Forgive my generalisations, and my outburst, but there really are some numpties posting on this thread.
And people who say - just use can flagging - well if people are having to bend a game mechanic to achieve duelling, why not give them a duelling mechanic and add some fun into the bargain? People obviously want to fight in this way, so why would a new feature be such a bad thing? Argue your position.

Nev Clavain: agreed
I can't but help to think that all the 'lawl, cry more noob' posts are just an attempt at getting threads like this locked for unconstructiveness (omg is this a real word?). And by 'threads like this' I mean threads that have any new ideas or anything that is not related to gank-squad wtfpwnage or extreme killboard leetness.

OK, first.. I have no idea why I'm replying to this... but having seen my share of unwanted PvP, here goes:
1 vs 1
Two referees are required, one referee will gang with combatant A, and one referee will gang with combatant B. The referees will simply insure both combatants are solo, and have no other members to aid them.
Combatant A drops a jet-can, combatant B drops a jet-can û when given the Start signal, both combatants loot the other combatants jet-can; the duel begins.
4 vs 4
Once again, we have two sides, so we have two referees; one referee for team A and one referee for team B. The referees insure that each team only has four members.
Before combat begins, each team member will drop 4 jet cans beside the position of the other team, with each can dropped in a row for easy identification. Both sides do this, so there are now 16 jet-cans on each side of the line.
The referees give the word, and you loot one each, of the other teams jet-cans, thus taking aggro from all four members of the opposing team. Once team aggro is set, the duel begins.
+++
Of course, there is no guarantee here, but at least its organized, and you can set-ups your matches and having betting and all sorts of PvP fun without too much risk.
Have fun :)

Originally by: Dog Food In my opinion, EvEs PVP is too much fun not to have a dueling system. Things like 1v1 challenges, 4 V 4, Corp wars. Whatever.
I would like it soooooooooo much :)
Yup this thread dont give much insight to why to be honest, so to justify why I would like one in a sentence;
Sick of being outnumbered.
I mean, something like a 'Tournament' system in all regions, everyone can gather around and duel.
Maybe have 'To structure' options etc.
Am I asking too much? :)
Would make a very nice addition to the game though imo.
Log on to Singularity and you can pvp all you want without actually losing anything.

The dueling system are everywhere. You can declare a war and fight your target everywhere.
Making a carebear area where we can fight with no death penality should never happens.

For God's Sake man, who said anything about a carebear area for fighting with no death penalty? Duelling in no way has to become that. Duelling can be just as brutal as pvp anywhere in eve, it could be that you risk everything you take into the arena with you.
Also can you not see the fundamental difference between declaring war on another corp, and having a quick duel with a particular player? How is corp war 'a duel'? THINK!
The only way duelling can occur currently is through manipulation of the can flagging system. On that point here's my analogy:
Yes you can make toast using a cigarette lighter! I'd still rather use a toaster.

All the game mechinics for this already exist. Now some enterprising young pod pilot must rise to the occasion and offer his services to organize the event.
Advertise, so the newbs come. Charge them a small fee. People can gamble and watch, its in high sec, and contestants use can flag to aggro each other. Winner wins a prize.
We dont need CCP to hold our hands. It can already exist, if you want it, go make it happen.

Yeah, very true. However if it proves popular and you get 200 spectators the lag will kill it. Those opposed to such goings on can easily blob it out of existance. Betting will rely on high levels of trust which in Eve many are rightfully not too big on. Add in suicide ganks for chuckles and clowns getting gang mates in the crowd to use a passive targetter and ECM on their opponent and you can see the issues that need to be overcome to set this up without CCP building something.
I have some holiday time coming up and if the urge takes me I might have a go at organising a small tournament. Perhaps a series of 1v1 and a bonus round free for all. Say a 5mil buy in per pilot and the pot less 10% goes to the tournament winner. Betting on the side and if anybody from the Scope fancies running some FRAPS we can distribute vids.
It's a lot of work and I really don't need another iron in the fire at the moment but we'll see.
(edited because I can say crap but "have a ***** at" gets filtered - go figure)
