Just throwing this out there, but some of the largest gaming companies in the world (like, a little company known as Blizzard) use peer-to-peer systems for distributing patches and other software. BeerThirty.com ~ More than just your favorite liquid breakfast. |

Torrents are a legitimately superior form of file exchange. I wish more sites would use them instead of the ****** file server hosting that is prevalent among the more "legitimate" parts of the internet.
No I don't want to download from a ****** server in atlanta at 32Kb/s, what is this 1995?

They are not the only one that uses Peer to Peer system.
WOT also uses a Peer to Peer system as well.
I think CCP should incorperate a peer to peer system as well.
Well they used to i do not know why CCP changed it ?
If CCP would had looked at the WOT Peer to Peer system that would work allot better than the system they have in place right now.
I am not a CCP employee-ájust having a input in the EvE forum

Quote:Using copyrighted files without paying for them is illegal
I would also like to point out that the quote above also isn't true always everywhere. It depends entirely on where you are viewing it and where it was copyrighted. In the UK, the copy right laws are fairly explicit. Sharing or copying these files is straight up illegal. If however, you download them, watch them and then never copy them yourself or give them to anyone else. You've not done anything illegal. The copying is done server side, you just requested that copy. The distributor is doing something illegal, you are not. Torrents avoid this issue by using one line in the UK legislation to their gain. In order for sharing copyrighted content, you need to be sharing a substantial portion of the total copy righted works, which with torrents, you are not. Because each person downloading each torrent is receiving a minuscule portion of the total file from many many different people. That way no one person is doing anything illegal.

In the past, UK copyright law was mainly aimed at commercial copyright infringement- that is, you'd get nicked for copying a VHS then trying to sell it on the market, but taping your favourite TV programme and making a copy for a mate (for free) was a-ok. The act of copying wasn't illegal, it was making money from the act.
Obviously attitudes and pressures have shifted since then and it all changed with the Digital Economy Act in 2010 which targeted the infringement act directly and targeted digital & online copyright infringement. It isn't that you're 'making' a copy any more, but 'obtaining' one through means other that legitimate purchase, not to mention the fact that torrenting is bi-directional- you're sharing all the chunks you obtain.
The act was controversial when it went through and some sections have been repealed for being unenforceable. ISPs were especially resistant to the responsibilities placed on them for detecting and listing infringers and censoring the internet by blocking websites (the part of the act that was repealed), plus they felt it unfairly targeted large ISPs, for which infringers would migrate to smaller ones to avoid detection. There's also privacy concerns and involvement of human rights groups over how detection is performed.
The number of cases of people caught infringing going to caught is still fairly small- most people are sent letters and offered relatively small sums (-ú300--ú500) to settle out of court. I couldn't locate statistics on how many did so and how many who didn't were the target of further legal action. Obviously there has been issues with scaremongering and people being targeted with fake settlement offers in the hope they opt to avoid legal entanglements.
Anecdotally, Stephen Fry supports non-commercial piracy and has admitted to downloading TV episodes from BitTorrent. I don't believe he's been legislated against but... he's a public figure. Your mileage may vary. |
