I saw a squirrel today jumping from one tree to another, the branch it landed on snapped. So the squirrel was on this falling branch, clambering like mad, thinking it was doing something about it.'

Only if you write the date 04/05/06 and not the correct way 05/04/06 then it all falls to the ground...

This is because dd/mm/yy is reserved specifically for important days. If it was 4/21/06, you'd say it was April 21st when someone asked you the date, because it's just any other ordinary day. I suppose you could also say it was The 21st of April, but then you'd sound like a pompous European.
However, if the date was 7/4/06, then you'd say it was The Fourth of July, because that is an important date. In fact, it commemorates the date when America decided we weren't going to subjugate ourselves to aforementioned pompous Europeans any longer, and declare our independance from a tyrannical oppressor.
So, in short, Americans use the date format as mm/dd/yy BECAUSE WE WANT TO!

Hmm. Indeed. I suppose it's fair of me to be grateful for this wonderful language you have blessed me with. I guess my point was that I'm sick of constantly reading what a majority of those here (ie: Europeans) and other places write about Americans.
This is not a political forum, so I probably shouldn't mention the many American inventions that have improved the daily use of 'your' language. Things like the pencil, morse code, telephone, and desktop computer.
Though I am positive there is one invention that Europeans may be grateful for. The man you may just thank someday was named Garrett Morgan.
End transmission.

It's because the months have names, whereas the year and day is just a number.
What? Someone deleted Friday? I never saw that memo.

i'd guess armageddon
If only because the Europeans and Americans will agree on what date it is :)
So, in an arbitrary numbering system, with a baseline of an event that may or may not be historically accurate, and using a calendar that's since changed a few times anyway, some digits are sequential?
Equinoxes and solstices, these are interesting events because they are a point of significance in the rolling of the year.
I could understand writing the date as YYMMDD. That's kinda useful, because a numeric sort, also sorts into date order. And it's in sequence of 'largest unit to smallest unit.
DD:MM:YY also makes sense - smallest unit to largest unit.
MM/YY/DD just makes no sense.
I don't mind that so much, because I'm happy in the knowledge that in the US, everyone who drinks a pint of beer gets less :) -- We are recruiting

BTW, about the 666=www thing, there's anothe rinteresting comparison I found out. In barcodes, there are usually 3 bars longer than otheres. They stand for number 6. So barcodes have 666 on them. And nearly everythign is marked by barcodes, right? ZOMG IT'S THE APOCALIPSE!

It's just the measurement of it that's man made. Time exists whether we want it to or not.

actually. 50 years from now it'll be 5:55:55 05/05/55
100 it will be 5:55:55 05/05/05 (2105)
so yea.. it will happen about 140 times in these 7000 years
edit: and all this is pointless. first of all. this is all man-made, nature doesn't care what time it is. time isn't even the same in 2 different places.
oh and about america being so great. you do realise your nation is only a few hundred years old, and everything you "invented" was based on european/asian discoveries, you didn't reinvent the wheel over there.. the true americans are the indians which you slaughtered because they were in the way. way to go :/
