Edited by: Halada on 05/04/2006 18:10:41 Look at my sig for a comprehensive guide, although it isn't made for total n00bs.
The steps not covered: 1- Get a Bantam and mine Veldspar in 1.0 2- Train Industrial I and get a Badger I. Fit two cargo expanders in the low slots. 3- Train mining IV, so you can use miners II. Then train Industrial 3 for a Badger II. 3- Mine Veldspar in your Bantam. When the cargo is full, eject cargo. Open the new container in overview, and when your cargo is full again, transfer the mineral from your cargo to the can until it is full (it will take you a while). 4- When can is full, go back to station and hop into your Badger. Haul the can back and refine the veldspar. 5- Now that you have got refined veldspar (Trit probably) scan market for best buy orders. Refined mineral takes much less place, so you should be able to haul 600k of Trit in a Badger 1, or 991K in a Badger II. Look for regions with buy orders for trit around 1.3-1.7, and make sure they want to buy a lot. Don't travel 18 jumps to sell trit at 2.0 isk per unit for 100 units. 6- Now that you sold 600K of trit, you have around 800 000ISK - 1 000 000ISK . 7- Keep doing that. Meanwhile, train frigate 4 and then cruiser 3. Buy an Osprey, which has a big bonus to mining yield.
PS. It will help if you train refining to level 4.
You then reached the point where my guide is useful.

I'm still a noob. Why is training Refining to 4 useful? Is that the point where refining your ore becomes more profitable than selling your ore unrefined? Because right now, I can make more ISK by not refining it (my Refining skill is at 3). The only disadvantage is that it's a real pain in the arse to haul it around unrefined, so you're pretty much stuck (as a noob) in selling it from a station within the system you refined it.

Refining 4 is (so i'm told) when you managed to make more from refining than selling the ore strait (normally, but don't get me wrong, its sometimes worth it to search the market)
Also, its a lot easier to sell Minerals than it is to sell Ore _______________

Although the market seems to have reverted to normal in the last couple of days, it has spent the last few weeks inverted, so that ore was selling for more than minerals. I have perfect refining in scordite and veldspar, and it was still more profitable to sell the ore than refine it. Where you "break even" on refining is pretty variable and depends on the market. You can calculate the value of ore versus minerals using this ore calculator , which includes provision for your skills and your refinery standing.

Ok well let's take this a little further with a few more questions:
Are stations which have more than 50% inert efficiency common?
If my refining efficiency is 89.75% (with Refining 3) and the station takes 5% in "taxes" due to neutral (0.0) standing, how is it possible to raise the profits I can gain from refining? I'm thinking I could buy the Connections skill which will raise my standing with the corp or do missions for the corp who own the station I'm at...anything else I haven't thought of?
Thanks!

The 50% is the max base.
Perfect refines are at 5/4/1 (Refining 5, Refine Effic 4, Ore specific one lvl 1). Note that the ore specific ones don't show in the station % you're quoted, but they apply.
To raise standing, do missions for the corp or train connections (really do both). ---- EVE-Central.com | Obsidian Technologies - Manufacturing, Defense and Logistics. We're hiring! Mail me |
