Hehe, I didnt actually intend a flame-fest when I started this thread. I just fancied sharing a nice little setup that I like to use.
I never said it was invincible, hell I can name a dozen ships that can kill it right off the mark, and we all know that.
The whole point of the ship is that I use it for Piracy.
When you go a'roving and find a random Proph in a belt, sure, theres chances he could have any kind of mod that could beat it down, and there are several, several ways. but chances are that the average NPC'er, no matter the age, is just as likely not to have something that can stop you as he/she is likely to obliterate you in seconds.
Just yesterday I engaged a Proph in it, started omgwtfbbqpwn'ing it, nailed its drones, when it MWD'ed away and starting hitting, and I barely got out.
The whole point of this thread is just to show not to underestimate frigates, and to also show how much fun they can be.
Hell, I lost one to an ishkur yesterday, because I couldnt nail its drones in time.
It does work T1 setup also. Give it a try sometime, and if you dont like this thread, then dont view it just to smack it.
Lol, For everyones satisfaction, the Merlin V Phoon fight... The phoon was using torps, no tank.
Also, let's be reasonable here. A 5-10M setup is nothing if you have learned anything, and have been playing the game more than a month.

Edited by: Ernest Graefenberg on 07/04/2006 11:42:33 It's also a complete waste of 5-10 mil considering all that amazing setup is is a neutered Punisher, which isn't that great in the first place. Might as well kit a ship that can take on combat-fitted ships for that price.
The sheer fact that you actually hit armor vs a torp typhoon is somewhat of a testament to how terrible its capabilitys are. Just take a look at the screenshot :
22.7 damage per torp * 4 = 91.2 damage/hit Lets say he refires every 9 seconds, thats 9.1 dps you've tanked. WOW HOW DO YOU DO IT BUDDY? PLEASE SEND ME YOUR SETUP OMG!

Erm it does, try it sometime, or are you too busy trolling for smack kills? :)

Attacking a unequipped BS wartarget moving from one station to another to collect modules immediately after purchase or similar circumstances is a valid kill. Mentioning it on the forum and trying to play it like you have an uber frigate set up is just ridiculous.

oh wait I know. for that setup, SMARTBOMBS aren't life threatening? hmm. I would think they would be.

If I see someone using smartbombs then I switch to xray crystals and orbit at 5.5-6k. Smartbomb problem solved.
And I'm not meaning any disrespect to the OP. It's good you are learning how frigates work and their versatile nature, but you need to take the weaknesses you've learned about the ship (web, nos, etc) and fix them. Improve upon the merlin's loadout so that it can negate or defend against the common anti-frigate defenses that a lot of pilots use. That way you are covered against the stupid pilots, the average pilots, and the older pilots. The more situations you can engage due to your ship and tactics, the better. --------------

This isn't my main. My primary account has been here since beta . My point being I offered you the side advice not because of how long you've been in EVE but because there are a lot of people who spend a year or two in mission running/npc hunting/mining and then decide to delve into PvP. The way you were describing the merlin loadout and it's capability while ignoring the weaknesses gave me the impression that you may be a new PvP player coming from a mining/mission background. If I'm wrong on that, my apologies.
Either way, strengthen your merlin to shake off most of the weaknesses you mentioned. --------------

Rawr :) beta ftw.
Nah I've been in PvP for the 18/27 months in game, but you were right in adressing my abilities as a frig hunter.
I;ve never bothered with anything smaller than a cruiser, as solo hunting mostly requires. So I'm far more adept at the cruiser + side of PvP unfortunately Real men Structure tank. |

Your experience in cruisers is going to be a huge point in improving your frigate skills though, trust me! Consider this when building your ships (frigate-class) for combat.
"How would I push that little sob away?" and then refit to counter those weaknesses.
I did that with my punisher when I was more well trained in my prophecy and ended up turning the punisher into a hell of a ship. So again, don't think I'm trying to insult your growth in a new ship field, just try and approach it differently. Because in the end, all the flames that the people here are posting are meaningless if it works in the field. That is where it matters, and that's what I'll applaud you for. Don't let this thread die, I'd love to see how far you can push the Merlin --------------
