Edited by: infraX on 07/04/2006 00:34:32 Edited by: infraX on 07/04/2006 00:34:18 If I've had EVE open for a while (several hours) my computer likes to reboot after I hit escape and press quit.
I'm not sure if it could be a problem with my computer (I play lots of other games and don't get the same thing happen when I close those down after several hours of play) or if it's a bug in EVE somewhere or a problem with my install. I have tried clearing my cache recently but that hasn't solved it.
As soon as I press quit, the whole computer hard reboots as if the reset button has just been pressed.

This is probably more for the Tech forum isn't it?
Did you try killing the process instead of quitting normally? (Ctrl-Alt-Del)
I don't think it's a very good way of quitting, but if it prevents your pc from rebooting then it may be worth it...

Update mainbaord drvers. Update sound drivers. Update grafic drivers. Reinstall DirectX 9.0c when the above steps are done.
If you are insecure on how to properly do the above steps, grab a friend with the knowledge and have him help you. Prepare your manuals in advance. Then take him out for a night. Tech people do love to get more than a thank you every now and then for their service. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. Don't see a problem myself. I turn my computer on and Eve auto starts. I quit Eve and turn my computer off.
Isn't Eve what computers were invented for?
Please check the forum rules regarding signatures, as they must be eve related. And don't discuss moderation. - Laqum |

Bumping as I still have the problem.
I am a techy myself (Network Administrator, 250+ machines). I've tried all the obvious things like updating drivers and stuff, I've cleared my cache on several occasions and reinstalled EVE (what a ballache). The only thing left to do is a complete reinstall of the computer, but it's a fairly recent installation and doesn't give me any grief. I can play other games just fine.
I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and try a reinstall of the machine. Just wanted to post incase others had experienced similar behavior since recent patches - was worth a shot.
It's annoying as every time the computer hard reboots, it wipes out my cache and I have to redo all my settings (not to mention sort out my bookmarks - oh and all my bm folders got wiped out on the last crash )
I was rather hoping a dev would see my post and perhaps offer some assistance - even just requesting some log files to be e-mailed in.
I'll try to reinstall first to see if I can fix the problem myself without wasting any of the QA guys time. If not, I'll update my post and file a bug report / petition in game.
Like I said - was kinda just hoping a few people had this problem so I'd know it wasn't me or my computer.
Cheers guys

I came here to post that :o EDIT: Full windows reinstall is likely your best bet, as previously said. Good luck with it.

Remember the "dont quit EVE" suggestion. Why'd you think people post so dang fast? XD
Oh yeah, I remember one time my techy friend said the reason for some crashing of programs/comeplete restarts is overheating, bad ram, bad CPU, bad videocard/soundcard.
sorry, not a techie myself, but who knows. Sometimes you just need a different perspective to fix a problem at times -

Quitting EVE may cause very heavy hard disk/memory access due to the clearing of EVE's memory section, and thus your power supply or memory is probably faulty.

Have you tried turning of 'reboot on hardware error' or whatever that feature is called? At lesat then you can see why your computer is rebooting (or at least see a nice hex number that looks completely useless but can give you an idea). I'd agree with Dark Shikari though, at first glance sounds like a memory issue offhand. In which case you can try running memtest, or other sticks of ram to see if that clears the issue.

i agree with the 2 above because EVE still has the problem where it starts to take up large ammounts of ram. check the button for restarting on hardware error and see if its blue screening. It could be the computer not liking that it has to clear up so much virtual ram.

Not sure if it's related but I believe there's an option to reboot when disconnected or upon abnormal exit within the Escape > General menu. So EvE might be doing this deliberately.

That's to reboot the eve client when it crashes, not your computer

There needs to be a ninja emote. Oh well, this'll do
Also, seconding the PSU problem. I've had some problems having a borderline power supply like this.

I've been having problems also since the last patch InfraX. Every time I exit Eve since the last patch it crashes my system, some times I can not even bring up task manager and close the executable it just flat out locks my system.
the error message is..
Eve: ExeFile.exe [ The Instruction at "0x012cf2d6" Refrenced Memory at "0x00000000". The Memory could not be "Read". ]
I used power quest disk image to wipe my system completely and restore it to its original factory image, reinstalled all the XP patches and SP2, installed latest drivers for sound, latest Direct X 9.0c, latest video drivers from Nvidia and then reinstalled EVE. I get the exact same problem when I try to exit, as well as the same error message pop up. I have 2 Dimm memory, I have tried it with just 1 stick in of each and the error is no different so it aparently isnt a memory hardware issue either.
The game runs fine otherwise, having to force shutdown my system by powering it off everytime I exit Eve isn't something I want to put up with forever though

1. Run Memtest86.
2. 0x00000000? Could be a null pointer error.
3. Bug report, send in the DMP file and logfile, everything.

I dont know why, but I played WoW for a long time and SWG for a long time. For some reason about 6 months ago when quitting those 2 games ONLY I would reboot. But it seems to have stopped in the last couple of weeks. No clue why though.

IRQs, make sure your video IRQ isn't being shared with your NIC or soundcard (or USB). Reset (renumerate) configuration data in your BIOS, or move the NIC to a different slot etc. Some PnP devices just don't play well with video cards I've found :/
