@ Liu Kaskakka : Consider the following scenario, you need to bail out, your stupid drones decide not to return (and we all hate this bug) or are just too far away. You just lost a lot of your firepower and probably won't be able to engage annother target.
What, if I'm flying a blasterthron should I not use my drones and forego the extra damage 5 x t2 ogres/berserkers give me? If I lose them does it mean that I can't engage another target?
Are you serrious? I mean, is this even an attempt at an arguement or are you just trying to start annother flame here? Obviously the megathrons main power comes from its guns, with the drones being about 20%. The Vexor is a whole different issue, its main firepower is drones.
Have you trained drones lvl 3?

A megathrons main firepower is from its guns. A vexors main firepower (in typical setups, like the first) is its drones. Using drone only ships in combat for non-experienced PvPers isn't exactly a good idea in my mind.

I don't have much to add, just this one tiny thing. If you're traveling alone in a frigate, and you get caught with your pants down by an enemy frigate, It might be better to stand and fight then to try and run. If you were truly suprised, you've probably been warp scrambled, so you're not going anywhere. But if you activate the guns, the ecm, the warp scrambler, the webbifier, or whatever you have, you might be able to outfight the enemy ship 1 on 1. Same would probably go for getting caught by an enemy cruiser in your own cruiser, or an enemy BS in your own BS.

In most megathron setups, the drone damage is more than 20% of the total damage output (the figure you mentioned earlier). Even if it was "only" 20%, it would be A LOT, and only a retard would not use it to his/her advantage - without even going into 'advantages versus smaller targets' discussion ..

Ya gotta love hotfixes...
Today I get back from my vacation and clone jump back to 0.0 and find I can't install a clone to replace the one I just used by clone jumping to.
When I went on vacation I had infomorph psych 3, but I had 4 clones and had at times up to 5. Now it will not allow me to have more than 3. At least we can see that the devs do read the forums because they 'fixed' clone jumping snappily quick.
Nice of them to say something.
So... all of my previous posts are now absolutely useless. -

I'm guessing what the OP wants to say is: try to avoid drone ships when you're an unexperienced PvP'er. Not to never use drones in general, of course not, a few dps from 3-5 light scouts might just be enough to save your butt.
However, when you're new and unexperienced in PvP using a ship that gets MOST of it's firepower from drones is a bad idea. Remember your first PvP in Eve? Who can honestly say they stayed calm throughout and made only the right decisions? Probably noone. I'm willing to bet it was more along the lines of "omg, I'm being shot at! What am I doing? What ship am I flying? Why is that button blinking???" for everyone. Noone is born as the perfect calm Pvp-Ace, and until you're more experienced the problems with drones and the neccessary micromanagement with drones are better reduced as much as possible.
He raised another valid point about drones as well: drone ships lose a comperatively huge chunk of their firepower when they lose drones, so in all subsequent engagements it will have this amount of firepower missing until you get replacements. Non-Drone ships on the other hand who lose drones retain most of their fightability.
edit: of course a nice big thanks to Aeaus for writing this guide ...

Icarus,
There were no recent hotfixes that altered this behavior. It has been this way as long as I have been playing (since Jan'06).
I also have info psych at lvl 3 and have 5 clones. However I still only have 3 JUMPclones. I have the 3 jump clones and the clone i'm in and my death clone for a total of 5 clones of which are only 3 jump clones. I know it feels like four because the active clone becomes a jumpclone when you jump out but as has been stated several times... one can only have as many JUMP clones as the lvl of Infomorph Psych.
It's ok to learn new stuff, I learn new stuff about eve almost daily.
*sorry for the off-topic post*
on-topic, The War-guide itself is very very good for us noobs and I look forward to the enhanced charts. Please keep up the good work.

I strongly dissagree with this. We always pull out if ransoms are paid and you need to look at it in a risk / reward kind of way. If the bounty is 50 - 100 mil, and your corp makes that in a 3 hour mining op, then it should be taken under consideration. All to often corps fight and refuse to pay and it ends up hurting the corp a lot more in the long run.
The guide to paying ransoms:
- ONLY pay if it will cost you considerably more to have a war
- get an agreed amount of time before they can deck again, make sure you screenshot this agreement, they know it, and tell them you will post bout it if they dont honer it
- make sure its a corp decision. Maybe your corp wants to fight, if not they should help with the payment
- try to get a deal on future merc work. You'll have the muscle to deal with the next problem then
My 2 cents anyways. Otherwise, sound advice and good post.

Your cruiser chart you claim a caracal has weak defence ???
the shield tank on a caracal rocks and i stood up to 1.8 mill rats in them in 0.0 ( unfortanatly i can't return the same rate of fire as them due to only being able to use heavy missles)

One other alternative - Join and alliance - corps pay 50 mill a week to war decc allainces.
Alliances offer the needed tools to deal with this type of action also...first of all to declare a war on and allaince, a corp is going to shell out some jack first
great idea then instead of worrying about 10 players in one corp you worry about 900 players in an alliance who can kill you in any empire system D'oh the alliance i was in their was about 4 days our of 90 days or so i was in it that there was not a war dec against them

You never really did PvP did you?
PvP Enemys don't have a predictable damage as your everyday rats do. Therefore, Caldari Ships suck at solo PvP. At small groups you use jammers, maybe a Large Extender. Therefore it's tanking abilities are weak.

Really good info here so thanks for putting it all down.
As an aside and not wanting to start any pointless flamewars, but purely out for interest value I recently had my first pvp experience in an arbitrator and went through all that was described earlier of 'OMG I am being shot at!' 'Wow why is that thing flashing' 'OMG I need to target something' etc.
After managing to first kill some dangerous salvage, I managed to target the first piwate, an inty, and force it to warp in flames before popping a punisher. I lived to tell the tale and yes I had a drone boat, so drones in even noob pvp do work really well
But I did suffer the lil critters not wanting to return to daddy and so had to leave em behind when escaping from the 3rd ebil piwate.
So I guess my experience is mixed - drones and nos on an arby works great, but losing drones or them not wanting to return and instead continue fighting when you are aligning to warp can be a PITA
Anyhoo once again thanks for the info, and more love for lil drones <3 (even if they are stupid)

One thing you haven't really gone into is the power of psychological warfare.
Your hardened corp members may not have any response to simply loosing ship after ship if you are doing poorly in the war, but it is incredibly detrimental to the newer player, especially the player who is quite terrified of PVP.
Organize your operations within the war to give "wins". This means selecting a good way to entice your target into a trap, or even a small couple of ganks with a relatively small sized gang. The more often your gangs go out and secure "wins", psychologically the bigger blob your going to get, and the more ability you're going to have to cultivate newer players into more seasoned veterans of combat. When they know what to expect when it comes to war and have seen it first hand it's less likely to get disheartened over the loss of a silly hauler. _______________________________________________

With regard to tanking. the caldari are somewhat unique in that they can have a 100% passive tank whilst remaining very effective.
My drake is fitted with T2 shield and power equipment, and T1 rigs, and i get nearly 20K shields and a recharge of 3 mins. on top of that i can shove in 6 (7 if i skill some more) Heavy missle launchers. so my DPs wont suffer either.
Very versatile when combatting equal numbers. and T1 BCs also have the opportunity to use Gang modules which increse team mates effectiveness in battle.
