went to low at 3 weeks and moved to null at 5. i was too cautious. within days of moving to null i was involved in huge battles involving hundreds of pilots. i don't even understand why people resist taking part in the fun aspects of the game. Money at its root is a form of rationing. First up, welcome!
Ralen Zateki wrote:I mean, ya, I get it. It'll be a long time before I'm a veteran pilot who can hold his own in low or null sec.
I'm not 100% convinced by this. Yes, if you're just starting out in a Rookie ship your contribution in those areas will be low. But if you pick a lower class of ship (Frigate, etc.) and start training you can start helping out immediately. (Noted that you say "hold his own" ... ) Character age is not that big a barrier to being a part of lowsec. (My foray into null was very limited)
Ralen Zateki wrote:The tutorial is very well done. From what I'm gathering, it's been developing over the years. But investing the time in doing the tutorial and the Sisters of EVE epic is proving to set me up quite nicely with a wide range of the basics.
Agreed. Circumstances enforced a break from the game a while ago and a good friend twisted my arm to come back and play again. I started a new character and started working my way through the tutorials and they're really nicely done and explain the core functionality well.
Amusingly, at the same time there was somebody who must have decided to skip them all. As I was working through the tutorials I could see his questions being answered by Aura.

LMAO! That is so spot on. I am very guilty of this. Although at least in my case, I'm micromanaging a high-sec empire that pulls in as much profit as most small alliances.
OP, follow this man's words. PVP the earlier the better. It's like haircuts. Once you wait too long, it becomes hard to accept doing it.

Love this post. I'm new to EVE (and gaming) as well. I really wanted to play multi-player WC: Privateer and I got my wish! It's kind of weird that the dense reading inside the game is a welcome change to the dense reading I do for my classes.
I've had a few heart pounding moments now, killed in my starter ship, jumped through a couple of wormholes into uncharted space (I wish I knew about sensors), and blasting through 0.0 in a tin can (my Condor). I do some mining in 0.4 occasionally to get some schoolwork done and pour through ISIS.
Everyone has been so helpful/psychotic in the game. There's really no middle ground.. |

Welcome OP.
Play EVE like you want. Nobody can tell you what and how to do something here. Its your choice and you can form eve to your likings (Within certain boundaries though ;) )
Have fun and stay strong. You WILL eventually lose your ship. unless you just park it in a High Sec station you will lose it...eventually. When is up to you :)
Sigh. Sometimes I miss the times when EVE was all new to me and everytime I saw something new I was like ""whoa" :O" .... sweet times :P

I've personally witnessed accounts less then eight hours old flying with and taking part in some epic fun pew pew space battles against other players.
So again, welcome - and my best piece of advice - don't believe anyone when they tell you how to play EVE. Most of them are too cookie cutter to try anything new or original, or have been simply fed the same line by someone else and will pass it on to the next generation of newbie. Hell, I know players who in their entire eve career have never even come up with a original fitting for a ship - they just ask others what the "Best" fitting is, and use that every single time they fly that kind of ship. Then they will cry when they are countered easy by other cookie cutter fits designed to counter the original cookie cutter fit. Think outside the box, man!
Play style dependant
You want pvp YA. Hit low/null and hope you can get some allies Otherwise depending on what your plans are, rushing off won't be profitable |

oh crap they are all running locator agents on you so they can kill you in your noob ship with a dreadnut. Stay out of low sec, get a retriever, buy a copy of excel and skill books and learn how to set skills and develop skill plans and ship fittings. Park at a trade hub so you don't have to fly for parts pickup, buy some plexes and keep your head down. |

Ya... I was lookin for a place to hunker down and grind out some high - sec mining... (I know I know... but hey, a cool $1 mil per pop is a lot for me right now and u should know that within 24 hrs I expanded my average haul intake from $1 mil to $4.5 mil. That's 450% growth per day for you trolls that can't add.)
Anyway... ended up picking a system that was several jumps either way from essential supplies. *facepalm.*
Another funny thing I just discovered today... for awhile in the first couple of days I was running around in a Frigate with a warp stabilizer fitted and completely oblivious to the fact that my tracking range was horrible. *facepalm.*
I've got a good plan (I think... I keep learning crap that makes me twerk I mean tweak it.) for both building up some mining capability (for those fat stacks...) and building up to my first cruiser.
It's rather sweet... while I grind out Massive Scordite I plot world domination. Or perhaps just a path to a decent first cruiser build.
O yea... forgot to add... I went into "Burning Down the Hive" knowing it's notorious for giving noobs trouble. I was thinking "not this guy" and all smug about myself ... you know.. thinking I had a decent fit and what not.
So I go in blazing with my destroyer... yes... destroyer... and got web-i-fied and swarmed and totally annihilated. (By the time I figured out what was going on it was too late... I almost pulled it off.)
Very humbling. But yes, I learned a ton just in that one fight. Went back in with a Frigate and cleaned house. It was probably the event where the difference between mobile sniping tactics and armor tank finally clicked. My prob was I didn't have enough tank the first go around. :P
Anyway... this thread could probably be merged with "the things that noobs do" or whatever it's called.
I'll leave u with this... I've ventured into 0.6 space to do some mining. That's right. You can't stop me (well... u probably could but, er...) I'm living on the edge. :P
