I'm currently belt ratting in null sec to earn some ISK. I'm flying a T1 battleship with mostly T1 fittings. I'm a fairly low skilled char I have about 4m skill points.
I would like to move up to clearing anoms as I've heard these are more profitable but having jumped out to a few to take a look I'm 99% sure I'll get blown up in my current set up if I stick around.
So my first question is what ship should I be aiming to fly in order to be able to tackle these, firstly with a group and with a mind to being able to clear them solo.
I'm thinking I'll need a marauder with T2 fittings to solo them. But that is just a guess, could be overkill or could be to weak I have no idea. I would need another 90 days training time just to get into that ship alone tho so hopefully there is a better option with lower skill requirements.
It will also take me forever to farm up enough ISK for a ship like that. I make about 10m ISK an hour belt ratting, with my current set up it takes me about 15 minutes to take down 3 battleships at a belt that are worth about 1m each.
My second question is what is the best way to farm ISK in null sec. I can't run missions in high sec because my alliance is always at war plus I like being in null sec and don't want to have to constantly jump between the two.
I would rather avoid mining because it's very tedious and training the skill I'd need to do it well would take time away from the skills needed for things I actually want to be doing. But if it's possible to get into a set up quickly that will make considerably more than belt ratting then I'd be open to doing that. |

Which race are you ratting, and what race ships do you fly, what battleship are you using and what anoms do you have access to ?
In general T1 battleship is not a terrible choice.

I don't have a link to the fit because I'm at work.
I'm Minmatar, I'm currently flying a Tempest. I'd prefer to be in a Maelstrom but the market is pretty limited where I am at the moment, so I'll probably switch out to that when one becomes available.
It has 6 x 1400 Artillery cannons, tech 1 Not sure what to put in the other 2 high slots, at the moment one is a large missle launcher that shouldn't be there because it says it's ranag is a max of 9k and one of those things that pulls wrecks towards your ship (can't remember the name)
I'm active shield tanking. In the mid slots I have:
100MN Microwarpdrive tech 1 1 x large shield extender tech 2 1 x kintetic shield resistance thingy tech 2 1 x generic shield resistance thingy tech 2 1 x x-large shield booster tech 2
Low slots
3 x gyrostablisers tech 2 1 x cpu extender thingy tech 1 1 x extra energy thing tech 1 1 x tracking enhancer tech 1
5 x Vespa tech 1 drones
Using large Titanium sabot ammo tech 1
Sorry I don't have the names, I'll edit this later with a link to the actual fit.
For belt ratting the above fit tanks fairly well, I never come close to dying, usually get to at most half shield. Dealing enough damage to take things down quickly is what slows me down and why I don't think the above fit would be able to clear an anom on it's own. 3 battleships is fine, but anymore at once would be pretty tough.
I'm in Gurista space at the moment.
For skills I have frigate, destroyer, battle cruiser and battleship all trained up to level 4. At the moment I'm working towards being able to fit Tech 2 artillery cannons so that I can do more damage. I'm about 15/20 days away from this. I can't fly any tech 2 ships. Is there anyway of linking what skills I have? Might be more helpful if there is.

As a quick fix
(a) remove the large shield extender and replace it with a shield boost amplifier II - will be more efficient for longer encounters.
(b) I would downgrade the prop mod to an AB or remove it. that gives you a free midslot to consider for an applied damage mod, and it will remove the MWD penalty to your capacitor.
If a dread gurista spawns, you can bm it and warp away and com back to fetch the loot. I wouldn't bother salvaging or looting from a T1 battleship during combat. BM a wreck and come back with a noctis.
(c) I would rig the ship if its not rigged. Begin with cap stability because you are learning encounters. If you can fix your CPU problems with a rig (or by removing the MWD), then do so to get rid of the cpu module, and replace it with a tracking enhancer.
In my experience gurista hubs are the most consistent (max 4 BS), gurista ports are also quite ok, but the "alternate" version of the port has quite a nasty spawn (if it spawns up with "dire" gurista frigates at the start, you know the third wave will be hard).
Warp in at 50 or 70, and shoot the frigates first generally, at long range where your guns can track them. If you don't want to learn the triggers, shoot all bar 1 cruiser, all bar 1 BC, and then shoot the battleships, then shoot the cruiser, then shoot the BC, 99% the trigger will be one of the last 3.
One difficulty with the pest is that it has an inflexible dronebay, as if you are fighting at 50 or 70 kms, you might want a couple of sentries (wardens) and some emergency light drones to clear any frigates that got close, and not bring the medium drones at all.

You might even consider "downgrading" to a Typhoon.
7 high slots, 6 turret/launcher hardpoints, vs. 8 high slots, 2 of wich you aren-¦t using anyway. 5 mid slots, same as the Tempest. 7 Low slots, 1 more than the Tempest, gives you more options regarding tanking, dam mods etc. etc.
One of the advantages of using a Typhoon is it-¦s drone bay, all of a sudden you have the option of using sentry drones.
That might compensate for the fact that the Typhoon has no bonuses to turrets. No math on it though......

+1 for "you should be talking to guys in your corp" . They are always the best source.
This is a fit I put together for a corp mate when we lived in guristas space till he could get a machariel (never not machariel for me, though the vindicator is better), upgraded to be all modern now with an MJD.
[Tempest, Starter] Power Diagnostic System II Tracking Enhancer II Tracking Enhancer II Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II
Large Micro Jump Drive Optical Tracking Computer I, Optimal Range Script Thermic Dissipation Field II Kinetic Deflection Field II X-Large Clarity Ward Booster I
800mm Heavy 'Scout' Repeating Cannon I, Phased Plasma L 800mm Heavy 'Scout' Repeating Cannon I, Phased Plasma L 800mm Heavy 'Scout' Repeating Cannon I, Phased Plasma L 800mm Heavy 'Scout' Repeating Cannon I, Phased Plasma L 800mm Heavy 'Scout' Repeating Cannon I, Phased Plasma L 800mm Heavy 'Scout' Repeating Cannon I, Phased Plasma L Prototype Cloaking Device I [empty high slot]
Large Capacitor Control Circuit I Large Capacitor Control Circuit I Large Capacitor Control Circuit I
Hobgoblin II x5 Hammerhead II x5
The MJD is nothing more than a "get out of jail free card" for when a neutral comes into system while an npc frig is warp disrupting you (NPCs don't "scram" like player scrams do, npc 'scrams' never turn off your ability to mjd or mwd). Even with not great skills it tanks enough for everything below forlorn hubs (forsaken hubs are not prob for this thing).
Tempest isn't the best ratting ship, IMO cruise missile Typhoon and Autocannon Maelstrom are way better.

Cheers for all the advice Tauranon, lots of stuff to start looking into :)
I have both rapid fire and motion prediction to level 4, surgical strike is only level 3 tho so I'll prioritise getting that to level 4.
@ Madmartigan My skills with Turrets are way better than my skills with missiles, and my drone skills could use some work too so I'll probably avoid the Typhoon for the moment, I'll look into it a bit more tho before dismissing the idea tho so thanks for the advice.

I can't imagine using autocannons on Tempest, it's incredibly slow so I don't see how you can quickly get close enough to something to do decent amounts of damage.
If memory serves even with the MWD I'm not even hitting 300 k/s.
How do you go faster? Am I missing something obvious?
Also I didn't know there was long range and short range ammo, how do I tell which is which because artillary and autocannons seem to take the same ammo.

Cheers for the advice, I'm pretty new to the corp/alliance. I've been mostly chatting to the corp and staying away from alliance stuff because I don't want bother anybody while I get used to the game. I really should utilise the info thats already in the forums tho, not sure why I didn't think of having a look there before here.
I hate asking questions about this type of thing in chat or ts because people just start throwing ISK at me. Which is great and really kind of them but it also makes me kind of uncomfortable becauseI'm not looking for hand outs, just information. I'm trying to get myself into a situation where I have a decent enough ISK farming set up that I can confidently go get ships blown up in PVP and know that worst case scenario it won't take me that long to farm it back up again. |

Anomalies are different from belts. The anoms you want to do are the ones where you can sit where the NPCs spawn and kill them before they get out of range. Frigs can be a pain, but that's what drones are for.

For projectile weapons, Phased Plasma (mostly thermal damage, some kinetic) , EMP (mostly EM damage) and Fusion (mostly explosive damage) are the short ranged tech1 and faction ammo. Hail is the tech2 short ranged ammo (mostly explosive damage)
Phased Plasma is the best projectile ammo against guristas and serpentis as projective don't get a kinetic heavy short range ammo (guristas and serpentis have thermal as their 2nd weakest resist). Titainum sabot is a mid ranged ammo and at the end of the day, if you are in range, phased plasma just beats it for killing npcs).
Fusion is what you use for angels and isn't really good against anything else.
EMP is best for Sanshas, Blood Raiders and Rogue Drones. |

Neuts are a good option for the extra high slots if you often face neutrals, if that is not a problem go with RLML to get frigs that scram and web done quick. While I mostly did fly shield buffer pest for belt ratting and annos in low sec back in the days, a armor setup gives you a lot more range. This setup is enough to do L4s(with dual EANM omni tank, no refitting, piloting it like a mach) so it should be also sufficient for annos. For drones I did use a full sentry setup for L4s in high sec(since DPS in combination with the capacitor of the tempest is a big problem), but for 0.0 or Low I would probably go with light drones for damage and a medium set of ECM drones, because they can take even a BC out of a fight and work with nearly 100% jam chance on a frig that does the tackle job, allowing you to get out or get up range.

minmatard ships are not hat great in guristas space. The CFC requires you to fly baltec, well used to anyway, so get a blaster mega or something that does better kinetic damage. If you run forsaken hubs and forsaken rally points you need to move very little. Forsaken hubs you need to get into position so you have about a 20km burn to the spawn points first. Passive tanked ishtar does really well for there with sentries. A navy vexor with faction garde's would probably also do a decent job to get you going, domi will work also. Ham tengu is a beast with good skills gets you round 1k dps. The smaller the ships the quicker you can run when neuts come into the system. all said.. you should probably find a better corp as any decent corp will have you fleeting with them to start making some decent iskies to get you going. If you need a good one, let me know and I can recommend some The thick plottens... CCP, When can my crane get its black paint job back?? |

Cheers for all the replies.
I've read up a bit on a lot of the suggestions here and aiming for an Ishtar with a focus on drone skills and passive shield tanking seems to be the way to go.
It's gonna take a couple of months for me to build up the skills needed for the optimal load out so for the time being I'm gonna focus on the skills needed for the drones and modules so that I can just use most of the fit in another ship, before training the skills for the ship itself.
My final question is which ship should I be using for the time being while I train for the Ishtar? I could have the skills to fly a Vexor in less than a day or I could use a Typhoon which has the same drone capacity. |

navy vexor is a pocket Ishtar.
The modules required for an Ishtar to active shield tank are very few, and in the last hac buff, they got an absurdly strong cap, can perma run a booster and invuln off 1 CCC, and can run an AB on top of that for some time, shooting guns...

The navy vexor has 125mb bandwidth, a feature of the Ishtar, and of all the drone battleships.
bonus points for figuring out the historical naval reference if you can.
and yes, its a much better combat ship than the regular vexor. |
