If anything could be actually proved I'd be the first to name and shame. However there's no evidence, other than the fact they jumped into us and then the TS server was hacked.
For those who don't seem to be following, hacked means someone without authorization broke in and shut down the server apparently using a security hole in the software itself.

For the reading impared, again, the hosting service reports to us that an external program exploit was used to gain superadmin access. A spy would not need to do this, he could simply kick and ban everyone from the server instead. The first is a criminal act I'm pretty sure (I need to speak with my lawyer first) the second is just underhanded.

So... your TS crashed and without proof you assumed it was hacked and started posting on the forums without said proof?
**** happens, contact your ts host and get logs maybe? have you even asked them if there was an outage on the night?
I think you should find some facts before posting BS like this on the forums

When stuff goes out of game like that, it's lame.
In the specific circumstance you're speaking of, using a third party program to access someone's secured database or server program is a computer crime.
If you live in the united states, call your ISP and get them working on your account usage records, and notifiy the FBI.
In this specific case, I believe the FBI will investigate and forward their findings to the appropriate district court for action.
Nothing that CCP can do about it though, since it technically happened out of game. (Unless they want to pursue harassment / griefing, but it's a slippery slope as it happened out of game.)
Who were you guys fighting, anyhow?

Edited by: Klaryssa on 09/04/2006 11:12:33 The spanking you recieved truly was of epic proportions, and from my point of view, 'hacking' the TS would just cheapen that victory.
<Ayatolah|Siddmed> Who want to spend time and effort hacking VC? <Ayatolah|Siddmed> WHO? <Ayatolah|Siddmed> no one, exaktly
That is what Im wondering as well tbh. Some proof, instead of a convenient although (if true) perfectly understandable excuse, would be nice.
Anyway, I do hope you get your TS up and running though, because fleet battles are fun.
Edit: and no, telling us the 'admin' said so is NOT proof. Ta

... yes, if they *ACTUALLY* hacked something. at least at the beginning of the thread it sounded very possibly like they had a spy who got in the voice chat, not a "real" hacking incident.
letting a spy into a voice chat and knowing the password and such isn't that different than allowing a spy acess to the corp wallet...

do you mean "use out of game means" in the part of interfering with their voice chat... or in their USING voice chat?

with that in mind... yeah, thats a little far. ... but I wouldn't expect anything serious to happen from it legally..
and goes to show you should always be able to keep track of things without anything besides what the game provides. stuff like that can go out, even when its NOT malicious....

1. Pull IP logs from TS/Vent server. Script kiddies that does this kind of stuff are rarely clever enough to go through a proxy/tunnel
2. Check entries.. I guess someone pulled that lame join/rejoin thingy on you that spams wav-files and join/leave sounds, and if so they will leave a few hundred of logon entries from the same IP.
3. File charges against them for computer crimes.

See, when I log into TS, can't get into a channel, and see "g00ns PWNED j00 l0l" or whatever as the name of every channel, I suspect that we've been hacked and someone called "g00ns" is taking credit (or is a patsy - website takes credit for a lot of TS hacking though). But thats just me.
And since the server was hijacked approximately 20 minutes after the little battle in UAYL, it really doesn't make any sense for it to be bob.
More to the useful side of things: has anyone used that oss project I linked to earlier, mumble? It seems to do everything, but I don't have a high bandwidth (or really, any bandwidth) server to test it with. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

IF someone from BoB hacked your teamspeak server, would he not do it just before a fight?
Please stop crying about losing and blaming BoB for cheating.

Why would "hacking" into someone's TS server be any different. If they actually hacked it, that's an arrestable offense in come countries. If they just scammed their way into getting the info for your TS server, and gettin on it and relaying that info to your rivals, that's just social engineering.
If you dont know what I mean by this, look up Kevin Mitnik.
I see this as a valid tactic. Actual Hacking of the server is different. Like I said, that's an arrestable offence(most places).
I draw the line at out of game stuff. If you need to use out of game means to win at EvE then you are missing the point.
I agree, but the irony is that TS and Ventrilo are both out of game means of achieving victory.
This situation does seem to be a case of where people blur the distinction between the game and real life. If you can infiltrate a corp as a spy in game, you can also get access to their TS system. And if you gain that access, is it wrong to sabotage it? If you have to hack it, I'd say it's clearly wrong, but if they give you admin access...well, that's their bad choice, I guess. Not that I approve of or would ever participate in such skullduggery.
I wish CCP would develop their own voicechat system...maybe give players the option of paying a little extra for it. -------------------------------------------------------------------

I would still say its wrong to sabotage a TS server even if you somehow got admin rights. It's not part of the game but it's used in conjunction with the game. A lot of TS servers are there for other reasons too, so you could be ruining more than just some corps fleet battle by doing this. To all the people that say it's part of the game, it's the spy, etc. There is no in game context you can give that allows people the right to mess with servers like that. You want the spy route? Okay where's the skills on his skillsheet that shows he can distrubt enemy communications. Riiight thought so. In the end a game should be fun, people having to re-do their TS servers because someone is getting their jollies off messing around with it, has no place in Eve.
The reason we don't see a lot of games out there with voice communication is that developers expect people will use programs like TS and Vent, something that they're familiar with and a program that proven to work with minimal bandwidth. The only MMO I've seen with voice communication was Planetside and oh man that was awful. In the end everyone ended up using...you guessed it, TS And Vent. It would be nice to implement but when someone out there has already done it well, why bother? Their time would be better spent on other aspects of the game.

imagine if this happened in WW2, ****** prints summat in the Times "I lost the war cos sumone nicked my Enigma Machine"
Sumone screwed up (ur host) and they managed to get a superuser account on ur TS server and caused choas by sendin u lot all over the place, sounds like good fleet tactics, Break communications and kill everyone thats not on ur side, if its a flaw at ur hosts end i'd email them and make sure they sort it so it dunt happen to sumone else. hell if they just need to choose right options and they have instant access thats a bad flaw on ur hosts part, even so they would still need the TS server IP to get the access to it in first place which probs leaked by an internal if owt so i'd keep an eye on ur members as well. maybe even ones upto a coupel months old, cos u never know if they was serious about takign u down then planting longterm spy would be best bet

Hacking a server like that is a criminal offence in most western countries.
Comparing it to military communications is fine but it's not actually in game is it?
How about if they didn't use their power to admin your TS to just destroy it?
What if they managed to find your own IPs from the TS server, then use exploits to crash all your computers? I'm sure your all firewalled and patched - but isn't it possible?
Maybe they could install key loggers on the PCs they managed to compromise and get your eve account - then transfer all your ships and stuff out of corp. Or log an afk account in during the battle and start shooting friendlies?
Where do you draw the line?

Who said it? "All is fair in love in war"...
If your at war with a corp, and you reley on TS, then shame on you for not changing the PW. If you did change it, and it still got hacked...Well better luck next time.
Communications is allways a valid target in warfare. Number one thing to take out....So if they new your server name, and password...well shucky darn there huckleberry you been gotten...

Hacking the Teamspeak - well, i think thats a part of the game - i could say - using a teamspeak server is cheating. Because if the enemy fleet dont use it, you have a advantage!. No, in my oppinion Teamspeak is no cheat and to take down the enemy communication is a vital part in a war. It would be nice to have a EvE integrated Teamspeak and the internal skills to hack the Enemy Fleets communication, but that would also mean that a "ext. Teamspeak" solution should be illigal and i dont think that this can be implemented.
That was my "EvE" view on your "problem" ;-).
Cheers, Tresh
