So I got bored and decided to annoy the farmers in Pakhshi.
I saddled up my trusty Iteron V ("The Beast"), jumped into the system and started to scan for likely targets. I soon found three: Ti Chell, Happinessai and a third character in a hauler. They were all in noob corps and Ti Chell and Happinessai mined away merrily while the hauler periodically popped out to pick up their ore - until I started to pick it up instead. This continued for a while, with the miners continuing to mine for the most part and no complaints being made in local.
Having grabbed a fair amount of ore, I warped back into the belt where Happinessai was still merrily mining in a Covetor and went for the next lot in the can, again beating their hauler to the ore. This is when things got interesting. I took from the can and the usual warning popped up:
(warning) You are about to steal items from Happinessai. If you continue, Happinessai and Happinessai's corporation will be free to attack you!
Well that was nothing new so I yoinked the ore... At which point the following message came up:
(combat) <color=0xffbb6600>Warrior I belonging to Happinessai places an excellent hit on you, inflicting 11.9 damage.
He had stuck his Acolyte and two Warrior drones on me and intended to destroy my ship for stealing his ore. I could only marvel as his drones made their way through my shield and started to go to work on my armour. Perhaps at this point I should mention my Iteron V's set up.
Hi: 150mm Railgun II, Small 'Knave' Energy Drain Med: 10MN AB, 'Langour' Webifier, Fleeting Warp Scrambler, Small Electrochemical Cap Booster, Supplemental Scanning CPU I (named sensor booster) Low: 2x Small Armor Repairer II, 3x Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
I locked the Covetor and fought back.
The following 4 minutes witnessed a battle of epic proportions as his drones ate at my tank time and again and, time and again, I repelled them and ate slowly away at the Covetor using my single railgun filled with Antimatter S.
I was eating through cap charges in an effort to sustain my tank, weaponry and scrambling modules, hoping, desperately hoping, that I could kill him before I ran out of cap. I switched off one repairer and prayed that it would be enough. Then came the moment that swung the battle decisively in my favour:
(combat) <color=0xffbbbb00>Your 150mm Railgun II perfectly strikes Happinessai 'Ti Chell's Covetor'(Covetor), wrecking for 152.9 damage.
He was hurting badly and I was able to fend off his drones, ensuring they never got my armour past 80%. Slowly, reluctantly, surely his Coveter yielded to the relentless hammering of The Beast. With one final effort a shot rang true against the withered structure of the Covetor and destroyed it forever. I scooped his loot, took the remainder of the ore and warped back to the station with my ship and my pride. I saw Happinessai's pod warp into the station just as I docked and, in recognition of his efforts, typed in local:
"Happinessai: good fight"
There was no response.
As a final addendum, the only item of his that was destroyed was a Civilian Shield Booster. I put his 3 strip miners up for sale on the market and within a few minutes they sold. I checked my transaction log. Inevitably it read:
Market: Happinessai bought stuff from Ebedar

Sooner or later, these idiots have got to realize that industrial ships are not the helpless flying cans that everyone believes them to be. The "assault industrial" is more than capable of holding its own while doing its job, and can survive long enough to take down those who prey upon it, or to get free if the opposition is too powerful.

I fail to see the part where they're clearly established as macro miners. So they ignored him stealing the ore? If you were in a barge or even the hauler picking things up and someone stole ore from you, I doubt you're fire upon them straight away. Those drones were intended for keeping them safe from NPC rats, and they decided enough was enough so set them on you.
Some people do actually mine to build things, or for the money to buy other things in-game. Not everyone is a macro miner or "farming" (my understanding of farming being making ISK to sell).

Edited by: Corunna ElMan on 10/04/2006 09:19:39 Happinessai has never run a single mission for anyone other than the initial tutorial agent. Never, in 7 1/2 months. Favorable standing with Concord only, unfavorable standing with the pirate factions. Consistent with someone who only ever fights NPC pirates in belts... and not for the sake of combat or the security status would be well above 1.6. No bio whatsoever - not even some cool wrecking shot or NAPs or anything.
Ti Chell has completed only the tutorial - in over 5 months, no standings with any faction, positive or negative. No missions, no rat kills, no bio.
I don't think you need to be D1ck Tracy to figure out what these characters are used for.

I had two fun encounters with Isk farmers of late. The first one in Hageken with a standard 3x Apoc 1x Itty5 group. After snatching some of their ore, they got a Ferox in which started to bait and then try to destroy me. Unfortunately for him, my Ferox tanking skills are fairly good, so he limped away (must have had 4 stabbers fitted too, my scrambling attempts were for nothing).
After a while, the Apoc's started to move into one single belt and put out 4 Vespas each. Knowing well the trap, I moved into the belt and made sure i had an aggro timer with all of them. Soon after, their Ferox warped in and opened fire, together with the 12 Vespas. Again, they were unable to breach my tank and their ships soon warped out. After dispatching the drones (could have left them, warped out and come back to collect, I know), I followed one Apoc to the station he had fled to and started to chew on him. Funny enough, there was no response so he popped after a while.
The sweatshop owner contacted me after (the Itty5 guy usually, for those who don't know) all in tears about his loss, which made me feel all warm and fuzzy.
The second encounter was in Isinokka with a russian Isk farmer ops (names sounded like garbled russian and they reacted more aggressively, see below). Their setup was 4 Covetors and 1 Iteron5, with the standard 1 Covetor per belt and the Iteron circling around. After having snatched some ore, they all disappeared to a station. Again making sure, I had aggro to all of them, I started to check the belts and found out that they all had changed into suicide Kessies and were waiting for me
Having some decent resists on the Badger2, I was able to make it out in time before they got into structure, switched to the Ferox and warped back to the belt. I was greeted with what must have been half of the regional Concord forces and to my great pleasure, 3 pods were also sitting in the belt. It seems that one of them didn't have an aggro timer towards me and was ganged with the others . As an afterthought, now I know why the entire group had negative sec standing.
To conclude, I know that the losses I inflicted on them aren't even a drop in the ocean and being a miner/builder myself, I get extremely frustrated at the lack of action CCP takes against farming. If you see macroers in the system you do missions in, don't ignore them. Go out and harass them, steal their ore and blow them up. Show them they're not welcome.

Thanks for all the comments and props
To respond to a few of the specific questions and criticisms raised...
Spy4hire: I didn't bother with the drones for a number of reasons, but mainly I wanted to keep my firepower focused on the ship. I used some poetic license in my description, the drones weren't hurting me that badly (though they got several wrecking shots of around 30).
Hllaxiu: The rail gives me more flexibility but in future I may switch to a blaster, it depends on what I feel fits the situation.
Shot Callista: I said they were farmers, not macroers, and arguments have already been presented supporting that. Whether you choose to believe them or not is up to you.
On a related note, I'm in Pakhshi again now - some 15 hours after these events happened - and all three characters are still there (Happinessai, Ti Chell and their hauler, Zachariahy), mining and hauling. People are welcome to check them out for themselves to ascertain whether or not I was picking on innocent miners.
Finally, this has never been about free ore or killing a soft target. I took maybe 2-3m ISK's worth of ore max from those guys - with all due respect, that's nothing for a player in my position. If I'd wanted an easy kill, I had cruisers, HACs, interceptors and battleships one jump away and could easily have come back in one of those.

Did you read my previous post? These guys don't do anything but mine. Nothing at all. Ti Chell doesn't even fight the rats that show up when they are mining.
These guys aren't "nubs", they've been around for half a year. There's no evidence that they do anything but mine, and all you need to do is examine their character sheets to see the clues. There's a word for people like that - they're called "farmers". They harm the game because they devalue the efforts of legtimate players and they're hell on the economy.
I don't feel a shred of sympathy for them.

that was now a while ago, i gave up, there is no point, its taking time from me which i can spend making more money than i am from them, and there's hundreds of these guys, the same guy controlling those 3 or 5 accounts could be controlling another set elsewhere.
its minimal damage, for minimal gain and minimal end result.

Or easy missions. "The Score III", 1 cruiser, 4 frigs (albeit can be interceptors).
How do you fit your hauler hmm?
Mammoth + 200mm AC + small smartbomb + shield tank + afterburner + webber + damage mods and nanofibers.
Mostly it's tricky to put enough damage on a hauler to kill cruisers.
Gotta say, it's a bit funny to see a Mammoth in an interceptor orbit.

Quote: what will make a difference is, instead of stopping them for an hour, report them, and have them banned for life.
That's useless. At least from my experience.
Not wanting to be considered to be profitting from macro-ing, in case they were macro-ing, I report blatant farmers (same clues already listed) as soon as I start ore thieving them. They're all still there. Responses on the petitions saying they'll "check it out" or "see what can be done", but nothing so far. Everytime I go through those system, or even just pop on to a docked char in the middle of the night to change skill training, those "players" are still there, still online, still doing the same thing, 24/7.
Finally had a group fight back, though, which was fun. Did the can swap thing, and got red flashy on a Caracal they'd brought out to scare me off. Trashing it with a 12 day old alt in a Punisher was a laugh.
