Yesterday i had little conversation about this Topic with a Friend and we came up with the following:
If u are a new Player and want to get in a BS fast then Cladrai is definatly the way to go, BUT if u already have some skills training and just want to get perfect skill tress then u should rather be a diffrent race.
The Reasons for that are simple.
If u want to get a perfect Gunnery Skilltree for one Turret Kind (for example Hybrids with all Sepcs 5) and if u want to get a perfect Missile Skilltree then the Missile Skilltree needs in total 5 Ranks more to train.
The same thing goes for Shield and Armor Tank. normally the only real Shield tankers are caldari and if u want all those skills up that u need u need to train 8 Ranks more then an Armor Tanker.
All in all that are around 2-3 months more training compared to any other Race if u want to get perfect skills for the main tye of tanking.
What we both found interesting is that a module like BCU II needs Gunnery at level 2 :)
Just wanted to give my 2 cent about it.

They are easier to skill. If you're talking about getting every applicable skill to V then yes they take longer. If you're talking about arriving at a usable setup they don't take very much at all. Also, sp for sp Caldari (mainly because of missiles) gets you a lot more bang for your buck.

But when you get to that evil PvP stage where you want to snipe people in low sec, your gonna regret training Caldari, and instead opt for turrets - which you can do, but months down the line.

my friend is a caldari. He regrets ever being one though. Part of it is baid attribute set-up. He has an ideal "caldari" pilot. his perception is a 23 and his will is a 20 without any implants. He can train missiles and ships fairly fast, but every other skill takes a while. Electronic and engineering skills are heavily relied on by caldari as well in order to jam and do electronic warfare. while he was able to fight a lot faster than I, I've already got almost matching skills and I'm only about 1 month old. he is over 3 months old. our skill train times for everything except ships and missiles are almost the same and I haven't even started that far into my learning skills versus his tier 2 lvl 4 learning skills. I have to say given this, caldari are quick starters and can be amazing pilots, but other races have an advantage in the long run. The start out push for caldari is missiles and ends with electronics and gunnery, where as everyone else just starts with guns and says bye to missiles.

and my 7.5M in missile do what for me with that teir 3 sniper bs? i guess i will rely on my 1.5M in gunnery (most of that is for tech 2 small guns). if someone did skill heavily into caldari, missiles, then this sniper bs means nothing.
Getting sick of this caldari/missiles is better crap. They are just different, some situations my caldari missile boat is omgwtfpwn. other situations i would trade my left nut for turrets. I also like to point out how useless missiles are right now in a major fleet battle, i am not saying missiles suck i am pointint out an instance where they do suck, other times they are alot better then turrets.
If you want something that is good at everything you want to do. ie fleet battles, shooting people that are moving really fast with changing ranges, gate camping, sniping. then you are going to have to train for missiles and turrets because neither system can do both. I cant understand why everyone in EVE wants to have all the weapons systems identical except for there name.

There's nothing to stop you from being Caldari and largely ignoring the missiles tree. That's what I did with my main character who is Achura. He just went straight to Minmatar ships. In fact my Caldari miner character did the same thing too. Both started with around 14 memory 12 intelligence right off the bat with perception and willpower at 9 or 10. About a week in all of those stats were raised by 4 through learning.
Electronics is used by every race for for electronic warfare so I don't see how that is relevant. Starting Caldari does not automatically mean you'll have low intelligence.

Great you can climb into the ship and use whatever missiles, thats good stuff, however even a pro with awesome t2 mods cant hold very wel under constant fire, cap runs out and they die, new players can jump in say a raven, get ok missile skills, then tend to die amazingly fast to pirates as they dont last very long at all.
A newish player in a caldari ship/bs is a pirates wet dream, you just know their defences will cave in damned fast.

Perhaps the same could be said of all battleships.

It could be said, but the caldari ship wont be able to boost indefinatly even under moderate fire, armour tanks can however.

It is possible to manage your shield recharge. You don't HAVE to leave it running 24/7, although it is nice on a harpy to run 2 Gisti type A's 23/7 It just take a lot more attention to shield boost, rather than armor tanking, just like using turrents takes a lot more attention to details than spamming missles.
For those who hate themselves or love pain, you can shield tank whith Rails
