Right now I have been trying my hand at pirating in my T1 Frig. I can pilot destryers now, but is it worth stepping up to one or should I stick to my Frig, and save my ISK, till I can get better than the Destroyer? Mainly been targetting other noobs when they explore/mine into .4 space if that helps. So mostly other T1 frig targets.

Honestly, don't bother.
Destroyers specialize in anti-frig at long range. At that range, you can't scramble, and might have difficulty disrupting. So, wait till cruiser.

idk, destys can pack a bit of a punch if used right - a thrasher with 7 autocannons can lay the hurt on fast, not to mention you don't have to spend more time training for larger guns

From experiance i would say skip the destroyer and go for cruiser. unless you going up against a frig, you destroyer is going to die. They just dont seem to be able to take enough damage.
Just my feelings on the matter

stick to frigs. tbh ive soloed up to battle cruiser sized ship(altho it took a while ) in my rifter *gli7ch hugs rifter
destroyers have too big sig radius and too low speed to threaten anything bigger than a frig in most cases
in frig pirating high speed and close orbit is your friend, ships cruiser size and up will be hard pressed to hit you unless specifically fitted to kill frigs( small turs and launchers adn what not) be aware tho heavy missiles will still hurt alot
i honestly love my rifter adn rather than doing tha movin on up in ship size thing ive chosen to spec in small gear and get into af/inty's and stay there til i get bored enough to do somthing else
but to answer question stick w frigs for now
oh and one other note, frigs are far easier to replace when you go pop

what they said. Destroyers are great for popping frigates and drones fast. Beyond that they simply don't have the hitpoints or speed to go after anything bigger unless it's an npc belt rat. I sometimes take mine into lowsec for popping cruiser npc's; since it's cheap to replace and it goes about it faster than a frigate......also there are often cruiser/frigate spawns that can be difficult in a frigate w/o good skills. They make a descent support ship for scraping frigates off of cruisers and such, but a cruiser fitted with small weapons or precision heavies can deal a lot more damage, at a longer range, and take more hits.

err ya tell that to the prophecy I killed the other day or the ferox or the other ferox oh and that thorax
Destroyers are great they do a ton of Dps and tank well enough to kill larger ships. THe only thing that will give you a hard time is a ship with a lot of drones. Drones = dead dessie
Go for it dont listen to what other people say try it your self then decide.

Edited by: Ernest Graefenberg on 11/04/2006 00:01:09 (Tons of stupid edits because I typed Heretic instead of Coercer) Drones vs a destroyer are really a clicking contest. Lock them, fire the MWD and pop away before you pop ;)
Other than that, destroyers are awesome. I wouldn't say they tank well enough to take on an appropriately fitted cruiser+ at all, but they can leverage either their speed or midslots and their good low-price firepower quite well.
Also the Thrasher is just sex. Although everything except the Coercer really has its perks.

Destroyers cannot pvp solo... Most of their bonus affect tracking and range. In that effect, they're effective anti-frigates, from the basic T1 to their T2 counterpart.
Low numbers of med/low slots don't enable them for anything else beside that role. But pakc then with a fleet and they're great support.
Each ship has a role and the one for destroyers is loud and clear.

imho, Destroyer's aren't good for anything (except for being anti-ceptor crafts - but if you don't go to 0.0/low sec or at war with other corps often, then there's not much point, really).
The only thing I can think of for a Destroyer is that if you could fit it with 7/8 Miner II's... But it's not possible because of the Powergrid/CPU.

Frigate gangs tend to move fast. Destroyer's are slow. And, therefore, you will get caught at the end, and probably pwnz0red.

that's what webbers are for. I learned that shortly after I got one and was killed by a frigate that stole my ore. I took him to 50% armor before he could touch me, but it wasn't fast enough to keep him at my optimal range and I got owned with blasters and rockets from 500 meters.

I use a thrasher setup with following config (I have been only playing for 11 days, so dont beat me up to much).
4x 280MM Howi's (Proton S) 1x Graviton Smartbomb 1x Standard Missle Launcher I (bloodclaw) 1x 200MM Autocannon
1x reactor control
1x Nonopellent afterburner (112%) 1x Shield Booster I 1x ECCM 1x Cap Recharger
If i can not kite @ 15KM then I bring it in close for the SB, Autocannon and Missle
Seems to work pretty good in high sec / medium sec - roid rat killing; only got attacked once so far by a player(burner004) in a harrier frig; he hit me pretty good at the start, but the SB, Bloodclaw and autocannon tore him up pretty good, so he tried to go out of targeting range, but when he hit 15KM, 4x howitzers 1 round zapped him.

Once in a while you will see me using a thrasher with 7x 250mm artillery, a mwd, and a scrambler. I put a Small shield booster in the last mid, and put nanofibers on low.
its been able to instapop most frigates and interceptors, it can keep its distance from assault frigates, and CERTAIN cruisers it can kill from a distance (though this proved very hard for me and i had to kill drones as soon as they came for me).
i would say the destroyer is more a defensive tool than offensive, plus in your newer days it can get quite expensive to replace at 1 mil per lost destroyer.
Stick to a rifter, as it has all the slots you need, and is not that expensive to replace.

A destroyer for pirating might not be a great idea. Simply because they are slow and comparitivly big targets with no huge increase to damage. IE if you go against a cruiser, your probably dead (and obviously anything larger then that). Also if you come about a frigate...chances are your not gonna catch it. Finally, as a pirate you will probably die a lot, so putting everything into a destroyer which you will then be risking may not be a great plan financially.

Destroyers for pirating? Forget it. For fleet anti-frig defence? You betcha. However, you need some big skills to use them right: Engineering 5, Electronics 5, Advanced weapon upgrades 3-4 etc. I fit my thrasher w/ 7x 280mm Howitzers using an MAPC, and I put a gyrostab II in the other low slot. The idea is to just 1 volley frigs before they even know what hit em. The downside is that you have to stay at range, use T2 guns, and use long range T2 ammo, so they don't get in under your guns.
Additionally, use 1-2 Sensor boosters for a fast lock. Fleet is 100% different than solo or even small gang fighting, so what works great for fleet battles sucks ass for small engagements.
IMO destroyers have a place in the game w/ fleet combat, but nothing else.

T2 guns on a destroyer will give anyone an unpleasent suprise. That kind of damage will make even a BS sit up and pay attention.
Normally T2 guns shouldn't go on T1 ships, but in the case of T2 smalls they're so cheap there's no real reason not to, especially considering the range bonuses.

Destroyers are useless against missile ships.
A decently skilled raven pilot will pop you in 1 volley (I can get torps to land for 350+ damage on a destroyer going under 300m/s, god help you if the raven pilot has cruise or precision missions)

In situations i fancy flying a destroyer, i normally end up taking a retri - less guns, but it can be tanked up to frankly insane levels, and there is the possibility of it actually managing to get within range of a frigate.

If you want ot pirate in one it depends on your targets.
They suck for getting ratters because most people in empire npc in caracels and feroxs with heavies. They're ideal for ganking miners though because they have a very high dps and warp faster than cruisers.

Destroyers don't get the love they deserve. They eat every Frig alive if properly fitted and they can be made pretty fast too. What you lack is the armor to even be dangerous to anything cruiser or bigger. So...
Against frigs ? Hell yes!
Not ? Don't even think about it. -----------------------

They are superb gang support ships. Much better than a frigate simply for cap and 20km scrams, and cheaper than a cruiser.
A cruiser like the Ruppie would be just as good in the same role, but I think the dessie, esp cormorant and thrasher are better at knocking down the ransom's drones.

Just another viewpoint... for PVE destroyers worked great for me well into level 2 missions and 0.4-0.3 rat spawns... easy to get in close to a group of cruisers and take them down quickly. Put a 200mm plate, energized adaptive nano plate, and a small repper on there and you can tank a reasonable amount of damage.
That being said, I was basically helpless losing 2 of them to good PVP'ers.

I use them to bait intercepters into doing something stupid like getting withen 20km of me. 7 75mm tech II rails, 3 tracking comps, small shield extender tech II, damage control unit. with throrium ammo you completely own the space withen 20km of you. If they want to use tracking disrupters, better bring faction ones, and bring multiple. The trick is to get them to come to you, if you use 75mm instead of 125 mm you kill them just fast enough that they die before you do, but it's close enough that they simply don't run away.
P.S. after Kali with max skills, you will be able to get a certain dessy hull to track at almost 1 rad per second, and have a 20km effective range.

Destroyers are not worth it, get a tier 3 frig or train for interceptors.

I love my Cormorant, but it's definately not for every situation. It's great for anti-frigate work, 3 150mm Compressed coils, 2 125mm compressed, 1 small nos, a small shield booster, cold-gas ABs, and, most importantly.....a named webifier doing 87% reduction.
This allows me to kill frigates with a single broadside all the way up to 36km, and when they close within 10, webify them and kill them just as fast.
However, it's not very good for killing anything but frigates or other tin cans, but it makes an excellent escort for bigger ships with poor anti-frigate guns.
So, depending upon your situation, yes and no.

I can get 210 dps (barrage S) and a 38-48% chance to jam a cruiser with my Thrasher. 285 dps if I use Hail S.
They do a lot of damage, and are fun to fly. You really need the skills to fly it properly though, I wouldn't reccomend it for a new player.

What I'd like to see is a proper T2 Destroyer, more like an 'Assault Destroyer', if you like, rather than this 'Interdictor' malarkey.
I'd like a ship that is to the Catalyst what the Enyo is to the Incursus, if that makes sense. |

A single destroyer isn't so hot, but if you're working in a gang of two or more destroyers, your capability goes up exponentially. You can run cheap multi-destroyer ops with low-SP players, and be confident of taking out most setups short of a good battlecruiser.
Basically, I'd recommend it if you're going to be working with multiple low-SP individuals. Otherwise, you're better off piloting a web/scram frig with your BC friends. ----------------- [ The Coreli Corporation Mainframe ]

I do mostly PVE missions and rat hunting. I just bought a Caracal recently as and upgrade to my Coromont. I tell you the truth, the Coromont can can kill the pirates and run the missions faster taking less damage by far than my Caracal "upgrade". To be fair, im only lvl 2-3 in all the missle skils and have only 3 in cruiser so if that was upgraded who knows.

They are an extremely nice balnce of isk, firepower and pilot ratio. fitted with nice guns, there firepower is incredible and they hardley miss.
The biggest gripe people have about them is survivabilty. Well, it doesn't take to many of them to put up incredible dps, esp with high skills, I have killed good cruiser pilots with a gang of 5 corms before the cruiser finished locking and unloading his drones. Cormorats esp with there optimum range bonus and spike ammo are mini tempest against frig hulls. Sit at a gate and pop inties as they come in, or better yet, seriously screw up a cepter gangs day by usieng the old warp in 2 volleys outta there tactic. if you screw up, so what? a lot cheaper to replace than a megathron.

Destroyers are fun but you have to move on to make isk from NPCing.
Start the destroyer skill and train up for Interdictor. (it will take a long time but worth it) I think it will be very interesting. Just got a great deal on a Sabre, faster than a Stiletto, just a tad slower than a Claw, but with much greater options.
I'm saving up for Interdictor skill, DAMN expensive though!
