I've been playing for about three months now, and I still do not understand the full use of these two features. All I do understand of the Overview is that it shows what is in space. Could anyone give me advice or tips on their use? Thanks in advance. -------------------------------------------------- "Though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays." -Sun Tzu, The Art of War |

/me challenges anyone to define overview and ship-scanner
Right, i'll try...
Your overview is right there, top right, shows everything (default settings) from Npc's to ships inside a 'grid'. I.E. your corp member warps in, he shows on your overview.
Now your ship-scanner is something similar, You have to open it, using the buttons next to your HUD, and it can scan up to 15au in a round circle (360 degrees) around your ship. It is used by many skilled PvP'ers to excactly locate a target within a system. If you say you are 3 months into this game, I wouldn't worry too much about it. But If you're too curious about the works of the scanner, do an search on these forums, there's a guide published not that long ago.
The less ppl who can use the scanner properly the better. It's like ship setups: Better to be good at it, and keep it to your own.

Edited by: Sonlatur on 10/04/2006 23:55:27 What exactly do want to know? Overview shows you small objects that are close to you (if they are activated to be shown) and large objects like planets systemwide (i think).
The scanner scans into the direction that your camera is facing with the angle that you set. Whether it scans in a true (3d-)cone i dont know - but i think so (i have read about some issues in the forums about that but do not know details... its only important if you wanna bust safespots anyways). While the space is really 3-dimensional, the solar systems are largely ordered in a 2d hyperplane (when you are close it might be off this grid).
What might confuse you is that npcs rather often only spawn once you begin warping into the belt and you wont catch them with the scanner before jumping.

From what I have experienced this is a popular myth. The scanner guide linked by the previous poster will help you dispell the myth. Using the scanner I can, without fail, determine if a belt has NPCs in it. I've even warped to an empty belt to see if I could trigger a spawn, and it doesn't work. Ever. So, unless scanning somehow triggers a spawn, the appearance of NPCs while you are warping in is a sensor effect or coincidental. If anyone has evidence that NPC spawns are triggered by player interaction, I would like to know, cause it would make NPC hunting far more lucrative.

Well seems we have difference experience. I have have npc spawn triggered by my arrivial all the time. Either that or they happens to decide to time their random spawn just as I enter the belt. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have similar experiences as Hoshi. I would guess that a spawn appears as soon as a player start jumping into the belt if the timer rat-timer says there should be a spawn. Then it stays until it is destroyed. Just a rough guess though. However that jumping in triggers spawns somehow seems very probable to me. I have experienced it pretty often that i'm at an isolated planet with some belts, do a 360 deg scan at full range and find nothing. Then i jump into a belt and lo and behold, rats.
