Hello everybody!
Some people want to separate their work life from their home life and some people do not. I am part of the latter group. I am a production manager in the world of work, and after playing eve for a couple of months I would love to use my real world skills within the eve universe!
Only problem is - I have no idea where to start! I have played the game for a couple of months and dabbled in various things, I have settled on going into industry/production. So does anybody have any tips on getting started in production? I have googled and read various guides, but I've often found the 'cookie cutter' is limited!
Many thanks for your time

Start with market research. Not everything is profitable to make and sell everywhere. Not everything is profitable to make and sell all the time. Some stuff which is profitable barely sells. |

I'd be interested in your opinion of Eve Production Manager. I've designed it to be an adaptive supply chain management system, but the only times I've ever stepped into a warehouse would be when proceeding directly to the computer room as a consultant.

- Find candidates that are sellable (decent volumes) using market interface (history). For this you can also estimate how many of the item you could make per day, you don't want to crash the market. - Use calculators on the web or make a spreadsheet to calculate cost of building for said items using decently researched BPOs (enough BPO ME calculators on the web) - As suggested train PE5 (may have different name now?), also consider training the 2 skills so you can use 10 slots at the same time.
Hell just select one item and manufacture a few cycles to see the mechanisms first then start dreaming and making your huge spreadsheets. :)
Industry may require some trading to do, if you buy mats from buy orders (often the only way to make profit) and to sell your stuff, which can be a pain in the arse and it's recommended for this to train some trading skills and get standing to lower market taxes as much as possible.
In an ideal situation you'll find items to manufacture with mats from sell orders and have a market where you can sell your stuff with low effort (no all day 0.01 isking in Jita).
If you're lazy you can use 3rd party tools but 1) they will hide a lot of the details from you which may prevent you in understanding a lot of the stuff you want to know in long run. and 2) they may collect your info based on your provided API for their business purposes (or hell, just sell the database). I wouldn't like competitors to know what I am doing. No big secrets but still. |

Since you come from the manufacturing business in the real world, put it into your perspective. If a complete stranger walked up to you at work one day and asked how to get started in the manufacturing industry after they had read a few articles online about it, would you really give them all the big tips?
If you've read the guides then you know the basics:
1) Get a blueprint
2) Get the required resources
3) Find a manufacturing slot
4) Move blueprint and resources to said manufacturing slot and start the process
5) Wait for the job to finish
6) Rinse and repeat
There really isn't much more that you can learn from guides except working out your own spreadsheets. Nobody can really help you with that as everybody works differently.
It all comes down to the math.
Just like in real life you have to take into consideration the costs of production and what you can sell it for.
It's not hard, just time consuming. Eve has the advantage of supplying you with the market so you can find the vast bulk of raw materials right from the start whereas in real life you have to put out RFQ's and actively hunt for suppliers around the world that can meet your quality and price. |

I agree I enjoy industry, if your building and researching in empire it's had to find slots. Some places I find open has some guy log on with all his alts and take up a whole station. I have many construction skills and have finished putting a the touches on making my own Indy post. You will want to watch the market, I personally have a small market I put into that easily sells and let null sec people slaughter one another and aid the groups that set up their camps in null |
