You place in the can what appears to be a portion of veldspar for example - but its a masked bomb which you can remote detinate!
So the lame thief steals what they think is ore, and you blow them up

How can an almost defenseless mining barge blow them up "as it is"?
By aiming your mining lasers at them and then draining the minerals outta their ship's hull?
Or by having an escort? That would certainly void the whole point of giving miners a new self defense tool, wouldn't it?
Besides, he said "blow them up", but why take that as an "insta-pop"?. A small damage surprise wouldn't be bad and would keep some otherwise impune thieves on their toes, too.
Not a bad idea to even make a skill outta it: "Booby Trapping". It even makes sense that after the countless robbery attemps that happen in Eve every day, some science guy would come up with such a plan.

Their usual course of action is dock and a smart ore thief has instas from every local belt to a station to make sure they can't be caught even if followed. 15 minutes later they emerge from the station and can't be touched.

1) don't mine alone into a jet can 2) don't mine alone into a jet can 3) Don't mine alone into a get can
There ya go. 3 ways to prevent your ore from being stolen.
but really 1) Don't mine alone in a jet can 2) Find a system with few'er people around (you can usually find a .8, .9 system a little ways off the beaten track that you can solo-mine into a can) 3) Mine with a friend 4) get yourself to one end of the belt, make an insta to the station from that belt and then back (so when you warp back to the belt you are right on-top of your can). that way, you see an ore theif in the belt, you can warp out, and get back to you ore faster then they can get to your can.
Those are some real idea's of how to fix your problem.
If you don't want to do any of those, then i guess your screwed.

ok stop moaning about jet can mining
1) secure cans cost far more than there size makes them worth. 2) if all miners stop jetcaning the minerals suply will soon dry up in empire as it will take 4X as long to get any mining done 3) you have just made ore thifes a thing of the past if everone stops so you have removed a job some pepole chose from the game.
not like we are asking for a nuke in the can just something that has an afect and increases the risk as we all know a mining barge v a desent ship is no contest so an emp shut dowm booby trap deveice would alow it to be come a firer fight ect

Lol you tell people to stop whining about jetcan mining, yet you're whining about people taking your ore.
You choose to jetcan mine, so you choose to run the risks. The risks are that someone might come along and steal your ore.
Think of Eve as the old west. Sure there's a sherrif (concord), but he can't protect you from everything. It's up to you to defend yourself and your assests. If you fail to do that, well too bad.
If CCP gives you the "booby trap", then ore thiefs are going to demand something to combat it. Then you'll be whining again because the theifs always counter your booby trap and are stealing your ore.
Giving a boobytrap for the cans would unbalance the game because everyone would use it. Not to mention the fact that it'd help macrominers too. It's always fun (and profitable) to rob from them.

Thieves are a high-sec danger. Move to .5 somewhere with drones and you won't be harrassed, and the ore is richer. Ideally find a nice backwater system to do it in.
Much as I hate thieves, the game would lose something w/o them (this doesn't mean if I can I'm not going to gank that indy).

Actully I like the idea of a Booby trap. i know the ore thiefs dont like the loseing their easy nonthreat Payoffs. I dunno a Limpet Mine defence system. Steal can. I let loose with a few Limpet mines. Ruin your day. You steal my ore. Ruin my day. Win Win!

Actually, if it's an indy, it's not too hard.
My retriever can fit a Scrambler (only one though) if I put a quantum comp in the othe low slot.
If they could use one or two sentry drones though...

If anything like this gets ever implemented they have to balance it so that we can booby trap asteroids too. Blowing up the silly covetors and others trying to mine them. Ha. And yes, without getting security status hit even in 1.0. That's essential.

I like the idea of booby trapped cans too. Somethin with a webber that slows the offending ship down to a crawl for 4-5 min is great.
