Hello, my name is Matias Otero
For those of you who haven't heard of me, here's a short introduction: I am a relative newcomer to the world of EVE. I started playing in February last year, began telling stories about my adventures in the game and as a result, a year later I am founder and owner of the second largest alliance in the game in terms of player numbers.
I founded a megacorp that started as 30 trial accounts in frigates, I've done large-block diplomacy, dealt with suspicion, betrayal and dissension. I navigated Brave Newbies Inc. through it's first six months of existence, then I created a government body (Called the Council of Newbie Management), invented a sort of constitution and ultimately asked someone I trust to take my place as CEO as I decided I wanted to be free of the burdens of command to learn more about the game. I have done solo and small-gang PvP and researched ways to make money for our vast numbers of new players, I've mined gas deep in hostile nullsec, participated in large battles, shot at or gotten shot by RAZOR, PL, CFC, TEST, Shadow Cartel, EVE Uni, RvB and the Russians and many others. These days, with firm trust in the management I have behind me and full confidence in the people who have been chosen to man it, I feel ready for the next great challenge.
That is why I want to announce that I am running as a candidate for CSM9. My candidacy will be based around three core ideas:
1. The long-term growth of New Eden. Improving the narrative needed to capture new players and fully immersing them in the multi-player gameplay and social interaction that keeps them there. I believe new player influx is fundamental to keeping this universe alive, and I plan to be here for a long time. I believe EVE could appeal to a much broader audience, and I would like to see that audience in space shooting at me, because people are what make this game feel alive.
2. Maximizing fun-per-hourGäó at all skill levels. EVE suffers from something of an image problem that isn't helped by it's "1995 accounting software" approach to human interfacing. The time you spend clicking buttons in activities that aren't essential to play the game brings down your fun per hour. I want to help make the game a slicker and more intuitive experience without it losing any of it's core complexity.
3. Unleashing the potential of the Sandbox. What drew me to EVE was it's freedom, both in social interaction (The one done with guns and the other one) and in economics. It's this grand simulation of human nature where content is another person making a decision, not a line of code. I have been on a mission to proselytize the appeal of a massive sandbox universe to the masses, something that's now starting to catch on in other genres with games like DayZ and Rust. But I fear EVE is falling behind the curve. I fell in love with the butterfly effect, but I'm sure most of you can count a good number of reasons for which this almost never happens for the average player, much less a trial account. This is the most gameplay-focused proposal of the three. I want to propose changes with EVE's current risk-reward calculations and mechanics to ensure that everyone who is willing to take risks will also be rewarded accordingly. For example, the fact that most production happens in conditions where player interaction is limited is a brake on the content-generation engine, and I want to set it free.
These are the three main pillars of my campaign platform. Details on each and every one of them will be discussed as the election progresses, but feel free to ask any questions or express your support. |

"The time you spend clicking buttons in activities that aren't essential to play the game brings down your fun per hour. I want to help make the game a slicker and more intuitive experience without it losing any of it's core complexity."
This is the main thing that should be pushed and Matias is the person to do it.

Matias's work brought me back into EvE after years of inactivity; and he has done the same for over a thousand. We are players who have had difficulty finding our place in a game that demands so much of its players; we want to live in the lowsec / nullsec sandbox without adhering to the insane dedication that those in the dominant Coalitions & Alliances ask of us. There is so much more to this game than endless SP / ISK requirements or calculating success in terms of "ISK efficiency". This new generation of players need ways to fit into the game without being cast aside for having a sub-par amount of numbers on a spreadsheet; I see Matias and BNI as perfect steps in the right direction.

Before I joined BRAVE I thought I was enjoying Eve. Yet, slowly I was logging in less and just not caring as much / burning out. However, upon joining and experiencing the culture of BRAVE due to the groundwork laid by Matias I have enjoyed my playtime more than ever before. Sure, that might not be the case for everyone, but there are quite a few (those ~6000 BNI members) who would agree.
I wholly support this product and or service.

Yes. Wholeheartedly yes. And here's why:
After reading about some of the shenanigans that go on in this game, I played a 14 day trial, but didn't feel like the game was for me; the game was overwhelmingly complex, and the absolutely huge universe left me feeling disconnected from the player base. I tried joining a corp, but the process was incredibly long and and my application took over a week to process. Between that and getting blown up in 3 seconds the first time I went into Null-Sec, (and not even understanding what happened or why), I decided that while I found reading about the game was fun, actually playing it was not. Thus, I let the rest of my trial days run out. However, I was still intrigued with what was going on in the game, and I would occasionally check forums and message boards to see if anything interesting had happened. Then, about 6 months later, the massive battle in B-R5 took place.
Over the course of the next couple of days, I spent time looking into the circumstances surrounding the battle, as well as the community's reaction. Apparently, news of the battle was attracting hordes of both new and returning players. While I thought it was good news, I didn't see myself becoming part of them. At least until I found someone talking about the Brave Newbies Corp in the EVE Online subreddit. I checked it out on a whim, and seeing all of the thank-you posts, guides, and events that the Corp had been a part of, I found myself willing to give the game another shot. As soon as I finished with the tutorial missions, I submitted my application to BNI, which was processed in under 48 hours. Within 3 days of accepting the application, I had flown in several fleets, got my first kill-mail, and learned more about the game than I even knew existed. My corp mates have been incredibly helpful and active; there's always something going on, and answers and explanations are readily available from the more experienced pilots. In short: BNI is pure, unadulterated, fun.
The growth, (and retention), of the player base is undoubtedly one of the most important things in an MMO, both for players and the developers; something that Matias has inexorably provided in the form of BNI. Within a single year, he has already left an indelible mark on the game. I firmly believe that his election to CSM will allow him to have a larger and overwhelmingly positive impact on the players, the developers, and the future of EVE Online. |

As there aren't many non-Braves here I'd thought I'd chip in my 0.02 ISK.
I've been trying for the past year to get my friends into EVE. After the recent battle I've actually gotten a few into it, though it's still a work in progress.
Brave has brought many people into the game and they're here having fun. I know how hard that is and I believe Matias is the right person to make that a little easier.
All three key points he's mentioned are really important to me, I support this candidate. |

Matias Otero has himself brought hundreds, if not thousands of players to EVE Online.
He represents the noob... the uninitiated, the overwhelmed. The organization he has built brings a lot of the fun back to EVE, that can easily be lost under the dearth of information the new player must process.

Well the fact is most player interaction in this game is shooting each other, and it rather difficult to profitably produce things when your materials and products keep getting blown up.

And for those Herculean tasks, he has earned my vote.

I chose Lychton Kondur to be my successor as CEO for Brave Newbies Inc. some time ago, and for all intents and purposes he is now the current leader of the Brave Collective, although it is the Council of Newbie Management standing behind him that does most of the heavy managerial lifting. I joined BNI when it was 4 days old and I was 2 weeks old. I would have joined on the 3rd day, but I did not know about the 24 hour waiting period for leaving a corp.
At first, we were just having fun blowing up our ships and exploring new eden together. A lot of the spies and bittervets that joined us were having so much fun, they decided to stay in BNI. Once we got some good FC's, we actually started winning more fights. And our numbers were exploding every day. We always welcomed newbs with open arms and stuck them on the front lines with the rest of us to explode gloriously. People stole from us. AWOXed us. Camped us. Some would promise to fight us in frigs and then bring battlecruisers to the fight. We would kill as many as we could, explode, laugh maniacally in comms and reship to do it all again.
From the beginning, people thought BNI would be an amusing failcascade. Just a blip on the eve radar that would quickly disappear. But BNI survived. And now BNI is thriving. It started with Matias and his vision of what eve could be. He instilled that same vision in the BNI management and everyone else in the corp.
I truly believe he will make a great CSM.

Huh. No criticism yet, so I'll drop in with my bittervet shitshow.
Your platform boils down to a vague starry-eyed "make Eve better". I know being terse in the original announcement is a good thing, but the post doesn't exactly inspire trust in your intentions and qualifications. Having the support of all of BNI is something, but sheer support does not a good CSM make. I did not vote for The Mittani in the past because all the goons voted for him (in fact, I don't very much like Goonswarm). I voted for him because he was very vocal about his views, about specific changes he wanted to see implemented, and he came across as being very stubborn. My views happened to largely align with his, so he seemed like a good vote.
You've got a good start towards some specifics in your Reddit thread, but be careful to not have people write your platform for you. That's the road to disappointment for everyone. You already pretty much have the position in the bag, so you can afford to take some hard, specific stances.
Since I mentioned specifics, I should be specific as well:
- What is limiting Eve's "audience"? Can you point to any specific game mechanics you would change to broaden the audience?
- What role do new players have in Eve? What are they entitled to have access to, or obtain with ease? What do they need to work for? How hard do they need to work to get it?
- How much difference should skill points make so newbies are not stunted by them? How much difference should personal experience arrived at through hours and hours of play make? Or, in other words, what leg-up do you envision longtime players having over new ones?
- You mention the "spreadsheets in space" aspect as limiting the fun-per-hour. Can you specify some idea(s) on how to eliminate the need for / improve the fun-per-hour of: the overview, local, assets window, market window, corp management? (to give some examples of bad spreadsheet interfaces)
- You seem to want more "instant sandbox" content, as you mention DayZ and similar. How do you reconcile this with the Eve spirit of "lots of time and effort to get great stuff"? Do you think that aspect of the game needs to go?
- Addendum to previous question: what do you want to do about nullsec sovereignty/influence, the mother of all "long term grind" mechanics?
- Can you give some examples of how you'd fix risk/reward in some places commonly reviewed as having that problem? Examples include: off-grid boosts, hisec ganking mechanics, AFK cloaking, FW LP farming, cloak/MWD mechanics, incursions (especially in low/null space), botting/AFKing, "bluesec"/"blue donut".
- What is your vision of a new player's experience in Eve say... 3 years in the future?
Until you put out more info on what you actually want to do, my vote will continue to lean towards someone with an established reputation and views from a large nullsec alliance.

Good to see more Low Sec focused CSM candidates, hopefully that will bring more attention to my favorite area of the game.
Matias Otero wrote:I want to propose changes with EVE's current risk-reward calculations and mechanics to ensure that everyone who is willing to take risks will also be rewarded accordingly.
I wanted to ask for you to expand a bit on this part of your philosophy.
We often hear about "risk vs. reward" from major Nullsec powers, who are dismayed that players can make so much isk in High Sec and FW. Gevlon Goblin (trolltastic as he may be) often points out that nullbears often have high sec or FW alts to make most of their casual isk. And yet, nullsec is always the focus of the increased rewards due to perceived risk - when aside from major fleet battles, there's precious little PvP risk in nullsec. FW space - or lowsec in general - plus highsec see far more kills per day than nearly any nullsec region not currently the target of an invasion. Even wormholes, with their lack of local chat, unpredictable connections, harder NPCs, and highly restricted ship movement are considered less of an "end game" and thus deserving of less attention / reward.
What's your take on risk vs. reward? What kind of risk should be compensated? Is Sov Nullsec actually safer than high sec and low sec, and should it be rewarded less as a result? If logistical difficulty is a factor, how does the prevalence of jump capable logistics networks that allow you to bypass all the traditional chokepoints and risks of travel out to the hinterlands of nullsec? |

Hi Matias! Questions here.
On #3. So-- how exactly do you plan on shifting reward to risk? How exactly do you feel it breaks down right now? How does this interface with nullsec and highsec space? Moons? Coalitions? And how do you plan to increase PvP presence in various forms of industry, which you currently indicate lacks player intervention?
This could be an amazing thing, or it could be a giant red flag in the 'my way to play is the way to play, so we need to buff it' sense. So-- have you expanded on this?
Sorry if this was answered before-- I'm at work, and didn't have enough time to dig through the wall of 7o. :/ Priano Trans-Stellar is recruiting! Interested in nullsec combat? Research? Exploration? Contact Priano Trans-Stellar: elegant solutions for the State's needs. |

Makoto Priano wrote:Hi Matias!
I just want to let you know that I'm reading all of this and that I'm taking notes. I will be posting more detailed proposals as soon as the election is officially begun. |

I honestly support Matias for CSM9. The only reason I didn't throw my name in the hat this year was because I heard he and Draleth were running.
I truly believe these two hold the future of EVE, understand the direction we need to be facing to grow the membership of our universe, are experienced in the trials of keeping a playerbase engaged (regardless of play style), and have a firm grasp on what it truly means to have fun in this game.

Hello Matias,
I am one of the co-hosts of the Cap Stable Podcast.
We would like to invite you to be on the show to be part of our CSM9 coverage.
Prospective CSM candidate who are interested in setting up a 30 minute interview, please use any of the methods detailed below to contact us.
