Nah, both sides would suffer. USA will detect incoming Sovyet missles and retaliate the same way.
Still Europe and other countries will get the fallout if that ever happen. ---------

just thinking about this, the choice the guy had was this:
if he fires, his country gets nuked, but so do the americans, no matter what. if he doesn't fire, either his country gets nuked, but no-one else does or no-one does at all
it might have been dereliction of duty not to fire, but i think it was the only sane option. whether or not i would do it in the circumstances is another matter though

good old Mutually Assured Destruction. This story reminds me of that time (was it 1995) when the Norweigans launched a weather satellite without telling the Russians and a drunk Yeltsin was like 3 minutes from launching nukes when someone told him it was a false alarm.

Mutualy assured destruction baby...there is no where to hide.
Of course I remember a similar situation just after the fall of the iron curtain. Quite a few silos located in the surrounding nations now no longer part of the soviet union could no longer pay for the power bill so russia shut down their grid...To bad they forgot they programed an auto launch sequence to fire in the event of a power failure.

Apocalyptic? yes. The people of america and the soviet union would have suffered immediate death. Their landscapes flattened, the sun in their skys obscured by mushroom clouds 10's of miles high.
The fate of the rest of the world would also be sealed. Our atmosphere would have been renderred unbreathable by the thick radiation. If we stepped outside, boils would immediately appear over our skin, in minutes we would be sizzling, our skin flaking off and vomiting violently.
In countrys close to the explosions people would die as soon as the radiation fallout hit them. The concentration of the radiation would be so strong we would feel it hit as like a soft wind, except this wind would announce our death. In countrys further away from the main areas of destruction the radiation would kill everyone within a matter of days after it hit their areas. Causing people to continously vommit as their body trys invain to eject the harm caused. The vommiting would not stop until almost all the liquid had passed from their body, causing them to die from severe dehydration. The whole world would have been inhabitable, with nothing living on it. Accept from primative life-forms such as*****roaches.
What has changed since the war? Alot. We are no longer in danger from humans destroying other humans on such scale with these weapons. There are slight possibilities of rogue partys of extremists gaining control of such a weapon and causing destruction.
But yet we continue to build weapons like this? Only this time they are 10 times more powerful than the ones ready to use in the cold war. All it would take is an accident. A false alarm. 1 madman. A country of patriots. A country of desperate people. A country of mislead people.
Do we not have all these in our world? Are we not still in the danger of this happening? Are all our lives still in the hands of a few witless men in power? Yes. Do something about it people. This is our lives we are talking about.
Get involved with anti-nuke organisatins. I will list some below.

Edited by: Morgana Janan on 15/04/2006 15:26:14 Edited by: Morgana Janan on 15/04/2006 15:25:47 The really scary part about this whole incident is that it all happened two days before I was born.
As for what happened to Mr. Petrov, his career suffered for this action. He'd disobeyed direct orders from Moscow to fire, instead listening to his gut instinct. He was grilled by his superiors and deemed an unrealiable officer. While he wasn't directly punished for his actions, he wasn't rewarded either. He'd shown a flaw in the Soviet systems, and so he was religated to working a paper-pushing job, eventually retiring from the military. Today, he lives in near-poverty as a pensioner, though in the last few years he's been gaining some notice. He dosn't consider himself a hero. ______________________________________________

War never changes...the weapons do, but war never changes.
"I don't know what weapons WWIII will be fought with, but I do know WWIV will be fought with sticks and stones" -Einstein
Thankfully, einsteins words are not any longer truth. There will never be a WW3, not on this planet. The major powers of the worlds society have stabled themselves politically, although many have large differences and disagreements. The Nuclear weapons have become so powerful and so destructive now, that they have become a single deterrant for anything like WW2 ever happening again. As i said in my last post. There is slim chances of such weapons being used but only in tiny portions. Thankfully.
And of course war has changed. War has shaped our world and shaped itself as we evolve. The weapons change, and so must the war. Its like saying, Cars never change.... the engines do, but cars never change. The cars are defined by the engines, and wars are defined by the weapons.
In my post i was making the point about our society today. And how that cataclysmic event of blowing the earth away beneath our feet is never going to happen. And i should be quiet now, dont want to get political do we now moderators? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

History ALWAYS repeats it's self...Tactitions said the same thing about Iron clad battleships, repeating rifles, and of course the bomber...but here we are today. The mood is set, the lines are nearly drawn the tensions are high and the time is just about right...BTW not realy a political discussion just stating history repeats its self....still war never changes...the motives are the same, the justifications are still murky, the price of means to victory is still the same, weather the soldier gets stabbed by a sword or shot with a howitzer, or the innocent civillian has his crops burned by horsemen or looses his food to fallout. Me personaly id rather die in nuclear armogeadon and get to say so in the after life than have to tell my death story of dying in a retirement home in a bed of my own urine

The difference is that never before has our species' primitive aggression had the potential to destroy not only ourselves but potentially everything on the planet with more intelligence than a *****roach.
It's not just the fallout, although that's bad enough - it's the destruction of the ozone layer and, arguably worst of all, nuclear winter. The worst-case scenario is that the intensity of sunlight would be reduced to the level of moonlight - for ten years or more. This would kill just about all plant life, and plunge the planet into an ice age - maybe all the way to Snowball Earth. Which would last just about forever on a human timescale, if there were any of us left.
I've heard it suggested that a ten-yearly ritual be set up, with all national leaders invited. The centrepiece to be the assembled "dignitaries" sitting, wearing welder's goggles, and watching the detonation of a high-yield (10MT?) thermonuke. Presumably somewhere where the impact wouldn't be too bad - middle of an ocean somewhere? - and from a safe distance of course.
They would feel the heat like Hell's gate opening, hear the thunder like it slamming shut again, and see light like the fires of the Beginning. And realise that, if they make enough and bad enough mistakes, they will see it again. Maybe closer up.
On a lighter note; devs please sort out the profanity filter?

Seriously though, that guy FTW. That is the sort of right person, right place, right time that you usually only see on TV.
And as for WW3, several years ago I held the belief that we had left behind the time when any major world power would openly declare war on anyone. As usual I underestimated American stupidity. ----------

I had a relative was in the RAF for most of his life and briefly was stationed in one of those silos. He was working in a silo during the cuban missile crisis and his job was to shoot silo operators if they disobeyed the order and fire the missiles himself. AFAIK anyway, i'll ask my father for some clarity on it later.
