Simply not funny. It is possible to be funny about armageddon, but if you fail you fail big.

I saw a squirrel today jumping from one tree to another, the branch it landed on snapped. So the squirrel was on this falling branch, clambering like mad, thinking it was doing something about it.'

Nah, both sides would suffer. USA will detect incoming Sovyet missles and retaliate the same way.
Still Europe and other countries will get the fallout if that ever happen. ---------

just thinking about this, the choice the guy had was this:
if he fires, his country gets nuked, but so do the americans, no matter what. if he doesn't fire, either his country gets nuked, but no-one else does or no-one does at all
it might have been dereliction of duty not to fire, but i think it was the only sane option. whether or not i would do it in the circumstances is another matter though

good old Mutually Assured Destruction. This story reminds me of that time (was it 1995) when the Norweigans launched a weather satellite without telling the Russians and a drunk Yeltsin was like 3 minutes from launching nukes when someone told him it was a false alarm.

Mutualy assured destruction baby...there is no where to hide.
Of course I remember a similar situation just after the fall of the iron curtain. Quite a few silos located in the surrounding nations now no longer part of the soviet union could no longer pay for the power bill so russia shut down their grid...To bad they forgot they programed an auto launch sequence to fire in the event of a power failure.

Although the possibilities of Nukes being used today are far more likely than 10-20 years ago...**gets his vault dweller outfit and power armor ready..."War....war never changes"

Too much radiation, We won't be able to move there for about 2 million years. Unless someone invents glass that can shield high level radiation. ------------------

Apocalyptic? yes. The people of america and the soviet union would have suffered immediate death. Their landscapes flattened, the sun in their skys obscured by mushroom clouds 10's of miles high.
The fate of the rest of the world would also be sealed. Our atmosphere would have been renderred unbreathable by the thick radiation. If we stepped outside, boils would immediately appear over our skin, in minutes we would be sizzling, our skin flaking off and vomiting violently.
In countrys close to the explosions people would die as soon as the radiation fallout hit them. The concentration of the radiation would be so strong we would feel it hit as like a soft wind, except this wind would announce our death. In countrys further away from the main areas of destruction the radiation would kill everyone within a matter of days after it hit their areas. Causing people to continously vommit as their body trys invain to eject the harm caused. The vommiting would not stop until almost all the liquid had passed from their body, causing them to die from severe dehydration. The whole world would have been inhabitable, with nothing living on it. Accept from primative life-forms such as*****roaches.
What has changed since the war? Alot. We are no longer in danger from humans destroying other humans on such scale with these weapons. There are slight possibilities of rogue partys of extremists gaining control of such a weapon and causing destruction.
But yet we continue to build weapons like this? Only this time they are 10 times more powerful than the ones ready to use in the cold war. All it would take is an accident. A false alarm. 1 madman. A country of patriots. A country of desperate people. A country of mislead people.
Do we not have all these in our world? Are we not still in the danger of this happening? Are all our lives still in the hands of a few witless men in power? Yes. Do something about it people. This is our lives we are talking about.
Get involved with anti-nuke organisatins. I will list some below.
