I'm a relatively new player. I get killed relatively often. That's really not an issue.
But what, precisely, is the desirable game mechanic that requires us to upgrade our clones to the level above your skills every time you get blown up? Can someone explain?
It's two clicks that will precisely only screw new users, and almost never screw old ones. Indeed, in the latter case, I could very easily see people rage quitting over it: could you imagine losing 50 or 100M skill points? I know I'd totally bail in that case, because f that.
I feel comfortable mentioning it it since I haven't yet forgotten to upgrade a clone, but I have no reason to think it couldn't happen, and don't see why it's a thing.
It would seem to me that the default behavior should be: I'm dead, automatically get me the next clone level. If I don't have enough money, pop up a message to that effect and then I can choose what to do (get a cheaper clone, go make more isk safely, beg, whatever) When I've trained past my clone's ability to keep, send me a notification telling me that. Whatever.
Now, I have no reason to say you couldn't override this behavior, buy a clone cheaper than the default explicitly, in order to... shed undesirable skills? Okay, I don't know why someone would do that, but I'm not against it if there is some reason: I just don't think it should be the default.

Regardless of your clone level, you do not lose down to the amount on your clone. You lose either all or a certain percentage of your highest ranked skill.
I lost a pod while in an alpha clone, and as a result lose 34 days out of 60 off of my previously trained to V Gallente Carrier skill. So even a completely basic clone is not the end of the world, it just really sucks.
Buy hey, Thanny was being phased out of all nullsec fleets and the drone bonus did not apply to sentries anyway, so \o/ w/e. Just a kick in the ass towards training Archon. |

As said above... you will never lose ALL your skillpoints if you do not have an up-to-date clone (or even forgot to upgrade from a basic one)... you will merely lose a percentage of the highest level of the highest level skill you possess.
For example: if I was podded and forgot to upgrade from my basic clone... and then I get podded again... then my highest level skill, [racial] Battleship level 5, will lose a percentage of it's skillpoints (about 10% or so) leaving me with [racial] Battleship level 4 and some change.
As for why the system is this way... it's so you make mistakes and are penalized for making them (and we have ALL made this mistake at some point).
The exception to this is Tech 3 ships... you automatically lose one level in a Tech 3 subsystem skill if you die in a Tech 3 ship. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

I'm pretty sure it's just an isk sink... +1 though, I'm not opposed to the clones being set to auto upgrade. |

What? What's the point in even having the ability to upgrade clones if they auto-upgrade? How is that different from just having one stock clone for everything with a set "clone activation" price upon death?
Now, I'm not going to argue that clones are a good system...I don't think they are. I think they actively punish older players who want to go roaming in frigates while they aren't needed in their carriers. But I don't think we should set clones to auto-upgrade nor do I think we need reminders...many people would consider it dumbing down the system. Either you remember and benefit or you forget and suffer for it. When it comes to clones let's either do away with the clone upgrade system or leave it as is, not make a click box or add warnings that removes the need to for the player to pay attention.
Inb4 I forget to update my clone the next time I get podded. |

Well, normally I would agree with you on the whole "not dumbing down the system". But in that case, the clone upgrading mechanic brings truly nothing in terms of content except an ISK fee (which is good). It's not a bonus you pay for (like implants) or a risk vs reward mechanic, it's just something that does nothing if you do it right, and punishes you if you forget to perform 2 clicks once every two years and/or when you get podded.
Automating it by default wouldn't hurt really, but you have to leave an option to manually buy clones, for players who cant afford a new clone (or just don't want to pay for some reason). |

Really...so my clone costs are less of a hassle\ISK than a new players? Mmmm.
I'd say play some more and really think about your ideas before posting up assumptions. There are many posts, websites, articles related to clones, clone jumping, medical clones, the pod express etc.

what total and utter rubbish with no basis in reality at all, well the isk sink part is right. I PvP every evening* with my corp and i fly my pod around low sec with all the smart bombing people on gates (i generally don't get smart bombed) I'd love to see these stats where older players don't pvp so much and how lack of said PvP is dependant on clone costs....
edit: * that is every evening i get to play thanks to stupid work as i know some smarmy swine will go look at some killboard and point out that i don't pvp every night |
