Hello all...
A little help please. Ive been playing for two weeks and have just got round to reading the forum. Up till now the rookie channel and some buddies have been helping me out fine and it was cool to potter about and learn as i go.
I've been reading a topic on Mim Frigate-Rifter setups and noticed that alot of players dont need/use fittings for the Cap such as Aux Power Cores, Power Diags or Reactor Core Control which i find i cant do without. Why is this...Skills?
I also see that some also use two thrust fittings in med slot such as AB/MWD etc as well. How wld one use a thruster to ones advantage in a fight (besides running away...)? I thought the point was to get as close as you can for better damage/tracking etc..Is it because i'm still a noobie that i dont find them as usefull/critical with my current level of missions??
Sorry if there is something i'm missing here but sometimes this game makes me feel really small!!
Thanks in advance.
Drek.

Using a MWD & AB is wasting a slot.. Pick one or the other. Normaly when people say MWD/AB they mean use one of the two. The advantage to them is you can pick the range of the fight you want easier (Close range faster), and its harder to hit fast moving targets (high transvers V).
Some configs are not cap intensive, so you may want to look at what they are using. In addition with good skills you can get your cap up to a decent natural rate.

One other thing i just realised i forgot to metion...these Rifter setups i been reading dont use any CPU or Powergrid upgrades. I find that if i dont use them i cant fit enough shield protection/hull repair or enough weapons. Is this just down to skills again? I'm concantrating on the engineering skills for now.
Can anyone recommend any noob/min/med skill setup for my rifter please. Ive tried a few things but suffer alot from Grid/CPU drainage.
Thanks again.

I havent realy flown a Rifter.. But Projectiles tend to be easy to fit. My first guess would run something like this... Some of it would depend on your skills. I would need to run the numbers on which guns to use as I havent looked at projectiles a lot.
3 Autocannons or Howitzers 1 Rocket Launcher or Standard
And either: 1 AB 1 Web 1 Tracking Computer 1 Small Armor Rep 2 Passive Hardners
or 1 Shield Booster and 2 Passive Resists 2 Weapon Moduels (Tracking/DPS) 1 Nano Fiber.
The Nano Fiber could easily be replaced with another weapon mod, PDU or other utility slot.

Shield tanked newbie rifter: 3x125 1x rocket launcher 1xAB, 1xMed extender, 1xSmall shield booster 2x PDS 1x Shield Power Relay
Armor tanked newbie rifter: 3x150 1x rocket launcher 1xAB 1xSmall Cap Battery, 1xCap Recharger 1x100mm Plate, 1xSmall Armor rep
On the armor one you can fill the last slot with either a capacitor power relay, resistance plating, nanofiber hull for more speed or if you drop the guns to 125's a weapon upgrade.
Personally I prefer the top setup, lots of shields and mostly passive regen on them. I use the booster to help with some rough spots. You can take that ship through all level 1 and most level 2 missions.

Yes, it is pretty much down to skills not being high in PG and CPU bonuses for not only the grid and cpu themsleves (i.e.) boosting grid and cpu, but skilll-bonuses you get for grid and cpu using modules. i.e skills that reduce grid or cpu fitting reqs. When i started in my rifter, i used to fit guns, rocket launcher, ab, small shield booster, cap recharger and power diags accros the top as they :- a) boost grid b) boost recharge rates of cap and shield. As your skills get better, you can change to armor repping setup, or fit better damage mods/ cap relays etc....
edit:- and the mwd/ab is for getting INTO range, not just running away..... 2nd edit :- getting into optimal close range, where your high transversal speed helps the enemy miss you cos of tracking....

if you are having trouble fitting items into your rifter make sure you have your engineering and electronic sub skills going.
they will reduce the cpu and grid you need to fit.
the more skills you have the less cpu and pdu mods you need to use and the more tank and damage mods you get instead :)

I would reccommend a small shield extender preferably tech2. It'll help keep your cap low and should give you enough protection for missions and lvl 1 complexes. You may very well have to fit a CPU as that is the Rifters weakspot in fittings. Rockets and ACs work well together, add a single nos works well too. Run a named AB and don't worry about a MWD unless if yu are considering PVP. But even then i think an AB is enough for speed and you certainly do not want too big a cap drain on a Rifter.

Hi Drek, another 2 week newbie here mate. I am also flying a rifter and my setup is:
High: 1x 125mm Light Protoype 1 AC (Depleted Uranium s) 1x 150mm Light Carbine Repeating Cannon 1 (EMP s) 1x 150mm Light Gallium 1 Machine Gun (EMP s) 1x Small 'Knave' 1 Energy Drain
Med: 1x 1 MN Afterburner 1 1x JSB Phased Prototype Warp Inhibitor 1 1x 'Langour' Drive Disruptor 1
Low: 1x Small 'I-A' Polarized Armour Regenerator 1x 200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates 1 1x Capacitor Power Relay 1
This has been working really well for me. It is more of a PvP setup plan, but its been working well for missions. I am waiting to get a few more skills and at least another 350k SP before I venture out to try PvP though, lol.
Anyway, just thought I'd post my setup to let you see another option.
Cheers.

Hello.and greetings...
Thanks you all for replies.
I have been trying a few things here and there to find optimum setup for my levels of skill.. and setups have been going well for the most part. No more real CPU or Powergrid issues lately.
Only thing is now i am getting LV2 missions now that are prooving a little tough. Keep getting serious damage and have to warp out. Cant seem to get strong enogh shileds..thay damage too quick.
Thanks Cailleach for your setup...i think seeing that u also a 2 weeker we prob on similar skill level.
Havnt really thought about using elec warfare so i think this is the time to try.
I hope i got enough flippin skills tho...no matter how many skills it seems a man has, he never ever has enough!!
Thanks all.
Onward and upward..

Edited by: PirateShampoo on 14/04/2006 19:38:08 Cause ur a new charater i would suggest u use,
150mm auto cannons and a maklith rocket launcher to save on grid,
For mid slots use a Afterburner, web and a cap charger.
For ur lows use a Small armour rep, a Energized adaptive nano and a gyro damage mod.
Only use emp for ur ammo.
Or if u can fit a 200mm armour plate instead of a adaptive nano i would suggest doing that.
Also im assuming ur only doing npc missions, if so u wont need a scrammbler only a web.

Edited by: BlackMoon Thrawn on 15/04/2006 02:50:38 as a new player, or even a vet for that matter, level 2's are going to be tough in a Rifter. When I was using the Rifter I found armor tanking to be the most effective. I used a setup like this:
3 X 150 Auto Cannons 1 X Rocket Launcher
1 X webber 1 X Afterburner 1 X Cap Battery
1 X Small Armor Repairer 2 X Energized Resistence Plating
The thing about the Rifter, and other Minmatar ships, Is using Autocannons you will need close range and low transversal speed. So turn on the AB get to about 1100-2000 and orbit. Once you get to your orbit range turn off the AB to lower transversal. You will still be going fast enough to avoid most fire, save missiles.
This is of course a pve setup which it seemed you were looking for.
My personal opinion is in a frig you want to stay away from anything that makes you easier to hit. Shield extenders and mwd's increase your sig radius and allow bigger ships to hit you for full damage. Edit (Armor Plates reduce your ship agility, also another bad thing for a frig IMO) Armor tanking just seems easier to me, against npc's anyway.

HI: 3x 150mm Light Autocannon I, 1x Rocket Launcher I MED: 1x 1MN Afterburner I, 1x Medium Shield Extender I, 1x Small Shield Extender I LO: 3x Shield Power Relay
You'll need Engineering IV & Shield Upgrades IV to fit it. Advise Shield Operation IV & Shield Management IV to maximize the tank. Advise Afterburner IV & Fuel Conservation IV to minimize the cap use of the AB. If you're bored, Energy Management IV & Energy Systems Operation IV to get crazy with cap.
With just Afterburner I, you can leave the burner on a LONG time. If you're just PVEing, this ship is a monster, able to withstand (minimum) 15 EM damage per second without the use of cap. That's from pure damage (missiles), otherwise the number it can repel goes up. You will trounce L1's in this, and most L2's are very doable.
