Hey we have to put up with your HORRIBLY OUTDATED internet connections that caused CCP to CAP the bandwith, so the least you can do is to put up with patching during your day.

Horribly outdated internet???
Last I checked, Europe was wayyyy ahead of the states, man... I live in little old Denmark, where practically everybody gaming has at least 256/256 - most are actually on broadband... just got back from the US where I spent an agonizing 2 weeks on 56k *shudder*

Just make sure that after you guys have installed the patch you will clean the CACHE folder inside the game (including the prefs.ini file).
This will in 100% save you from future problems and incompatibilities.

Edited by: Ace Merrill on 17/09/2003 13:34:19 Midday GMT seems pretty fair to me.
Majority of players will work during the day (like me right now), so only weekends really an issue.
Any earlier and you'll be affecting late night players across the pond or australia or somewhere. Any later and people coming home from work in Europe would be unable to play.
Sorry if I don't get upset about the timing for UK / European players who stay home all day!

Kid, just because scandinavian countries are on top of ****e that does not mean all of Europe is.
Also, broadband (adsl, dsl) is just the broadband of poor people, try cable, then laugh.
And EVERY gamer in the us that plays online and does not live in the STIX has cable internet.

with a worldwide player base .. no matter when they patch.. or how long the patch takes... there will always be some people discomfeted. Relax. have a coffee... watch a trashy talk show.. take a nap.. CCP want's the cluster up asap believe me they do. They chose the update time to try to be as fair as possible... ease up people.. have a group hug "Human Nature - If someone put a big red button in a remote mountain cave with a sign on it 'End of the world button!! I love the way the U.S. crowd categorise every country in Europe as the 'euro crowd' and assume that we all have the same internet access and structure.
Most common now in the UK are either DSL or Cable, cable standard is 1Mb.
Its vastly different for other countries though, my brother has a 2Mb leased line in Switzerland for less than half the cost.

Edit: Btw, maybe we're not familiar with /all/ European countries because they're in some cases the size of our smaller states, or in some best cases are county sized. When you can cross through 2 countries in 2 hours via train, it gets a little confusing to us. Considering it takes days to get across some of our states via automobile or via train. Note, my comment was NOT on who has a faster speed, but what gaming community has the better average speed, which would be the US, otherwise why would you have european companies still catering mostly to 36k users.
UK is A-OK, them and most scandinavian countries, its the other slow folks (italy, where I lived 18 of my happiest years... and others)

What's your rub? I'm a US Citizen and I'm hard pressed to find Ohio. It's not about being ego-centric or anything. It's just been 20 years since I had a geography class. But prior to leaving high school in order to pass Social Studies (went to private school and all courses were required to pass), I had to fill in a blank map of just the outline of the continents with the countries, their capitals, major rivers, major mountain ranges, major seas and major lakes. Bonus points awarded for adding information such as major imports/exports, currency, and current political leaders.
I'm a Texan. There's Texas, Louisiana (for gambling), Mexico (for partying) and then all the rest of that dat land that'd be mighty fine for cattle. 20 years of booze, babes and blackjack will make ya forget a few things

Actually, to a certain degree, you're right. You could've said it a little nicer though :)
Everyone has stereotypes and they ***** about each other in generalities. Its an age-old argument. And I'll admit its pretty tiresome.
The reason why many of the Europeans go on about the U.S. that way is that you are part of one nation, whereas we in Europe are not, and thats why we hate being generalised as 'euros' or similar.
Anyway, I'm going to leave the argument there, its nothing to do with the thread and its just causing more angst. I hope you'll join me.

I think CCP should reschedule the patch and let us play the game.
Obviously they have run into some difficulties they did not expect, and these problems could and should be fixed while the game is up and running, instead of continuing to increase the downtime.
I think CCP fears an outcry from players though, if no patch is produced to justify the current downtime, so they will probably be stubborn and keep the game offline til they can fix the patch, which looks like several more hours to go.
I do think it would be best to cut their losses now and reschedule though.

Never ceases to amaze me how some of the inbred single cell brainers manage to turn a simple forum thread concerning the patch into a flame war involving Euros and Americans. When you simple minded f*cks wake up and realize that we all share this ball of mud, that we all bleed red regardless of race, creed or religion we all MIGHT come just a whit closer to making this a better place to live. For those of you who flame THIS post -- you've done nothing but prove me right (ie. you ARE inbred and you have but ONE cell floating around in yer damn brainpan) and shown others that YOU are the ones that perpetuate this infantile horse**** flame game.
Regardless of when the game gets patched (European time or American time) it's just more par for the course. Deal with it and move on. Yes it kinda makes all of us wonder why it's taking so long but I'm not astounded OR surprised that CCP hasn't posted any type of information on the state of the EVE-Universe and this "uber-nerf" patch as it has been called by some. |

So what's wrong with xDSL? Here in Sweden we have VDSL, 26 mb up and down. Better than cable, I think And only $40 a month :) Not too bad eh?

he he silly yanks... other than maybe people in spain and portugal pretty much every european I ever came across im my long mmorpg experience had a faster than isdn line. In Holland alone (where i'm at) more than 60 percent of the population not only has a computer but is connected through dsl or cable, while whole hordes of yanks sit around crippling the internet with their puny 56k lines (which i believe is due to that fact that in most places in the US local calls are free)... so don't sit around telling us that Europe is backwards in any way, because by doing that you only betray your own general ignorance of what life in Europe is like...thanks for a good laugh :) ****
now reguarding the DT, well they got to do it some time don't they? there will always be someone that's got a problem with it regardless of what time they choose so it might as well stay the way it is.

Jorev, I understand your wanting to get a session started -- I think we all do. EVE-Online is very addictive! But rescheduling a patch to accomodate the "I need my fix!" crowd is non-productive and not very pragmatic. There are a great many things in previous patches that performed like Tech 5 items (the Photonic Coprocessor is a perfect example). CCP needed to get this game off the ground and running as quickly as possible, and I think that they spiced up the start of this game (in terms of modules, etc.) in an effort to interest the gaming community. Although there are some things about the patch that are going to be a bit tough to work around, I honestly feel that CCP is giving it their best shot on an "across the board" game balance.
Jorev, it's something that needs to be done bro. Just surf the web for a bit, chill, grab a beer and enjoy some downtime from the rat race we all lovingly call EVE-Online. |

hey hey, this is a sweet thread.
Can I just say that:
- There is no ******* bandwidth cap. Eve just uses hardly any bandwidth (try it - CTRL-ALT+F9 (I think) will display your network stats.) it is about 1/60th of what Unreal Tournament (1999) used to use.
- Display lag in Eve is not caused by modems. It's caused by hardware bottlenecks.
- 'Real' Lag (rubberbanding) in Eve is caused by a spate of port 135 worms, which will decimate any network they touch (our hospital just got taken offline for 4 days (not my fault)) because of nachi, and some **** ignoring our security policies.
- America have a lot of things (I won't mention any here, because the first things that come to mind are fast food and Microsoft)
- Europe have a lot of things (like castles, Mad cow disease, German cars, Drunkenmaster, expensive petrol, more than 200 years of history, an Eve Cluster...)
So er...
where was I?
well, anyway. shut up with yer moaning, the lot of ya.
I'd also advise people to take these 4 hours to at least cordially browse through the patch notes. The spate of 'What?!??12' threads that get posted on or near patchday is nothing short of hilarious. .

Nah, just generalising myself
As for this extended downtime, I would just like to add my own worthless opinions:
I dont like some of the things in the patch but I guess thats my problem. But, in saying that, i'd rather they take ALL day to get this right than rush it and find half the community complaining of CTD's after the last patch or something else. Sure for me and people like me, this is a right pain. I sit and stare at this screen or my TV in the other corner, but i'd rather face this boredom than lose my ship to a CTD like last time. 5 hours waiting here isnt as bad as mining for 2 weeks to replace the last loss. Unlike alot of others, I didnt come here and moan about my loss due to bug, I didnt even petition it (knowing that replacements are few and far between) I just fitted the old miner 1's and got my arse in gear. So enjoy the wait, and pray that its because they want to get it right, not wrong like last time. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Inquisition Long live the Inquisition Long live the Emperor Long live Amarr!

I *do* dislike cabbage, mayo, and corned beef though.
But save the hostility for someone who deserves it. Thanks. .

MUHAHAHAHHA]] - Err, CCP chose the London Docklands hosting complex known as "Telehouse" to host Eve because it's the best complex in Europe, and not a single Non-Government owned facility in the US is better. They're directly connected to 2 main POP's, each carrying 6GBps bandwidth, and in turn, they're connected to the main Trunk line that trawls the deep depths of the Atlantic, buried at the bottom. And that line's 255GBps by the way.... so no.. no cap there you idiot.
[[Kid, just because scandinavian countries are on top of ****e that does not mean all of Europe is.
Also, broadband (adsl, dsl) is just the broadband of poor people, try cable, then laugh.
And EVERY gamer in the us that plays online and does not live in the STIX has cable internet.]] - Again, hate to break this to you, but most of central Europe actually considers the US behind, and there's not much of a difference between "core" EU countries eg France, UK, Germany -- and the rest which has supposedly "superior service". When you can get SDSL 4096kbps/4096kbps services for the average Euro monthly rate, and not have to pay the equivalent of renting satellite bandwidth, let me know. And i'm not asking you to go and find ONE provider that is installing it into newly built housing estates, i'm talking about several companies leading to at least 90% availability for all population centres, and 75% to everywhere else...
As for Cable being superior to DSL lines... er no. ADSL and Cable are much of a sameness. They both succomb to the same problems, ie signal degredation, user contention rations due to the companies being too tight arsed to install decent infrastructures blah blah. The only reason you dont see this so much with Cable is that it's a hell of a lot easier to stick signal boosters at every network node to hide the problem. As for Cable being faster... every single ADSL provider in the UK can match the speeds of Cable providers. But concluding the Cable vs DSL, DSL overall whoops Cable's ass, due to the wonderful thing that is SYNCHRONOUS DSL (SDSL). Equally complemented upstream/downstream rations. Because of the way Cable physically works, and due to packet protocols, you will NEVER get this with Cable, and for that reason alone, it sucks ****.
[[There is a link on slashdot.org today that will end all argument over who has the crappiest net.
And its the US by a LONG WAY!!!
Only ex russian countries have poorer take-up and speeds than the US.
Argument over -*****y yanks get it handed to them again :P
At least it wasnt by one of your own for once - friendly fire dont exist on the net :P]] - LMAO - too true
[[Edit: Btw, maybe we're not familiar with /all/ European countries because they're in some cases the size of our smaller states, or in some best cases are county sized. When you can cross through 2 countries in 2 hours via train, it gets a little confusing to us. Considering it takes days to get across some of our states via automobile or via train]] - That has to be one of the weakest arguments/excuses for ignorance i've seen in quite some time! I salute you sir. Yes. that's right.. when I next claim not to be able to tell an American all 50 States i'll be sure to include the excuse "Well you're so damn big.. and there's so many of em.. I just loose track"...
[[Ok, I wish that Europe got off their pedistall, which is old and decrepit, and that the US stopped being so damn arrogant in its bigotry.
We could achieve so much more working TOGETHER.
(the above statement is intended overall, I know here you are all open-minded illuminati)
ps. I am aware of how hypocritical this sound being that I was *****ing about the european connections in the first place.]] - Too ******* right it's hypocritical, at least have the good manners to stfu and sit down when people turn around and ***** because you tried to stir things up. It's a shame you couldn't find it in yourself to say this from the BEGINNING
