ships (large frigates and up) do have crew, its the command functions that are routed through your pod replacing senior staff, but there is still maintenace crew into the thousands on BS.
So why isn't there a payroll charge to your wallet for all the crew on your ship? Not all empires employ slaves. Why can you build and pilot a ship with only minerals, a BP and a manufacturing slot and not have to pay extra for hiring a crew?
Capsuleer ships as I specifically pointed out, are not the same as normal ships. Undergoing the sort of g-force that you put your ships through would turn a normal unprotected crew into mush, which is why you're in a cushioned goo filled pod.

You want to explore? Do some sightseeing? See something other than a planet or moon you can't land on? Uh, okay. here's a snapshot I took last time a courier mission took me through Amarr.

There's tons of crazy stuff out there. It's up to you to find it.

Would be cool if you could leave your pod and enter a bar or something like the Tattoine bar in Star Wars :)
or better yet the Seven's Brothel.

Oh sure... then we could spend tons of programming cycles on coding clothing items and such crap so a bunch of morons can run around and ask all the female characters to take their clothes off.
Look, finally here is a MMO that is not based on the three bars that EVERY other MMO is based on of health, power and level. It is more free form than any other game out there, but yet.... you want it to be the same. Leave my EvE alone! If I want to go to a bar, I'll hit ALT-F4 and go to a bar. When I want to play a MMO, I'll double click my EvE icon.

I remember back when video via CD was considered cutting edge. There was a game called Privateer that is a lot like Eve. They had these great cut scenes (filmed--not animated) for all the little seedy/trippy bars that you would meet agents in. It was cool the first couple of times, but got repetitive after awhile. If they had spent as much time on the game AI as the cut scenes it would have been a better game. It would be cool to see beyond the pod (where are all the girls that are advertised?), but not at the loss of gameplay.

Social meeting spaces arn't very popular in MMOs because they don't have much to add compared to a text chat channel. Star Wars Galaxies has cantinas, but they are basically just chatrooms filled with entertainers running endless dance macros. Earth and Beyond had bars, but no one used them.

I really dont see a need for going into bars and walking about a starbase - but i would like to see planet landings - take a look at the frontier elite series - a rich solar system might not even have a starbase. surface landings were possible on planets that an atmosphere and that diddnt have too much mass - planets that diddnt have an atmosphere, you could land under the surface via a hanger bay. You could even land on a remote moons surface and drill down using a miner, sometimes you found nothing - and sometimes you found gem stones. Imagine if you could build your own landing zone, you could add to it - trade from it - it would give an excuse for new technologies. Ok the game dosent need it i guess, just like you dont need to buy a new car for instance - an old one does the job, but why settle for that, if it can be better then lets make it better.

So yes, they ARE working on getting out of your pod - but for starters it's going to be mostly role-playing.

I don't know why there isn't a "crew" charge when buying/building ships, but as AlexCA said, ships (capsuleer and normal) DO have crews. Read the backstories ... ------------------------------------------------

Is there a place or plans in the future to take this to another level of existance??
No, you can't leave your pod in game play. The devs chose to start with spaceships and that got interesting enough for them to keep adding to that. The Starwars MMORPG did it the other way round, starting with action on planets and intending to add spaceships later.
Avatars will be walking around in space stations next year hopefully. A demo video has been released and it looks awesome. Visiting planets is further down the line, 2009 at least I'd guess. This makes sense since CCP's other property is the White Wolf vampire universe for which the planned MMORPG will require full avatars anyway.
From a real world economic point of view there's no need for a rush into avatars. The number of characters has been growing about as fast as the game can handle and players aren't asking for them. Eve has so far been running to a different pattern to other MMORPGs, steady growth rather than boom, prosperity and bust, and we hope it stays that way.
