Edited by: MissGA on 16/04/2006 08:41:20 Edited by: MissGA on 16/04/2006 08:41:11 Edited by: MissGA on 16/04/2006 08:40:40 Dell latitude laptop - 1.8 Ghz - 512 Mb RAM - 64mb Geforce2 - Plenty of HD space. - I have even upped my virtual memory to around 2000 MB.
Yet, it's the eve's "exefile" process that takes up 95-100% of the CPU for most of the time (except when docked). But I don't think it is the CPU usage that is killing my frame rates. My disk keeps on constantly spinning for some reason (even inside a station after a full 10 minutes). There should be absolutely no need for any page faults to occur inside a station. All this makes my laptop run verrry hot. Afraid I might shorten my laptop's life very quickly.
Since this is a corporate laptop, I can't even upgrade this thing even if I wanted to. Any suggestions?

Eve takes up 100% of CPU time on a single core so even on my 3GHz PC it still runs at 100%
The problem you have is your graphics card, the GeForce 2 was good when it came out but now its very underpowered. You could try forcing the newest drivers onto it (google for the 2go driver patch to convert the unified drivers to mobile drivers) but I don't think you will get much of a speed gain. << Insert whitty sig here >>

Right as specs go your laptop "should" run eve ok - not blisteringly fast but just ok.
The labouring hdd sounds like a very fragmented drive. Especially if you have used your own page file settings. As it is also a company laptop I would check for background processes Tsrs etc and try to minimise these. as your 512 Mb memory wont really sustain too many other applications running.
Hope this helps

Maybe it'll be more worthwhile to use your own laptop? Just a suggestion since playing EVE on corporate computers could be taken against you later on...

I can see two possible issues with that spec.
The graphics card only has 64Mb of RAM - that's a bit low for Eve. At 1.8GHz I don' think the CPU is fast enough. From my experience you need a top end P4 (3.4G or higher).
You should also check if the graphics memory is dedicated or (not good) shared. -- (Battle hardened miner)

I play on a laptop as well
1.6 Ghz pentium M with 1 gig ram 32mb mobility radeon 7500
my vid card has less mem and is a generation older, and EVE plays fine. can even push the res upto 1680x1050 on my lcd screen, some interesting lag effects when you are vid card limited but not CPU limited, which is hard to achieve in Eve.

as for needing 'top end'
I also play on a P3 550 wiht 512mb ram and radeon 8500 64mb.
laptop gets better framerates, both are playable.
EVE is an old game, it doesnt really need all that much. The P3 gets painful when market shopping in space, but Ive even PVPed on it and its doable.
Ive even PVPed on the laptop while running on battery while CPU was locked in 'very slow' mode to save juice, over wireless. But I like living on the edge.

I'm really interested to see if you sorted this problem out.
I,ve a similar set up on my laptop and it used to run fine, not every 2 or so mins my frame rate drops from 80 to 3 - 4.
I've defragged the drive, checked memory, dropped resolution, all to no avail. I have not a clue as to what is the problem. Basically nothing has changed.

No, the problem isn't sorted out yet. My drive is only 8% fragmented. And I was checking the performance graphs. When eve's pushing my CPU to a full 100%, the frame rates are fine (around 20-24). But after playing for some time (say half hour), the disk indicator light becomes worse and worse until it becomes a constant glow with almost no flicker at all. At that point, I also see my CPU usage drop to around 5-10% and obviously my frame rate has gone to 0% by then.
If I somehow kill the eve process (quitting from the game doesn't work at that point), and then restart it, it seems to work fine again but slowly degrades over time. Many people have alluded to memory leaks in the game, but I thought that should be true for everyone. Yet there are folks here who play without problems with a system half of mine.
[Oh yea.. don't care about corporate repurcussions for playing on their laptop any more .. I am soon leaving my current job for another one anyway].

You could try setting the page file to a set size and make the max and min sizes the same, about twice the size of your memory. Give it a reboot and see if it changes anything. Windoes can slow itself down be resizing its pagefile.

I have an IBM laptop with 1.4 Ghz intel, 512mb RAM, ATI Radeon and not so much HD space. But it runs even all dandy and fine. The exception is that when I've been running the eve client for 6-7 hours or so (I sometimes leave it on just to change skills) it starts to slow down and in the end Windows starts to increase the page file which locks up the system. I find it likely that it's just that, resizing of the page file that is, that's causing the slowdown. I agree with Corovus, set the min and the max limit the same, that should smooth your performance

That is one of the best things to do, set the page file, i usually go around putting the same amount as the memory. I have 512 MB i set the min and max at 512MB, now i have 1 gig so i set 1024 mb to both. _______________________ Recruting

~~ Could someone explain this Page File to me? Don't really know what that is, but I'm experiencing some similar problems. EVE runs pretty good for the first hour or so that I play. The longer I stay logged and and travel around, eventually I get a few seconds long freezes every once in a while. Don't got great hardware (not far off from the OP's), so I'm trying to do what I can to get this running smooth as I'd really like to upgrade to a payed account.
Thanks in advance! ~~

If you have Windows XP you need to do this:
Start -> right click My Computer -> Properties
System Properties window:
Click on the tab Advanced -> Performance Setting -> the Advanced tab again -> Virtual Memory -> click change
Initial Size and Maximum Size you put (that is what i do) the same value equal to your memory. Example: if you have 1 gig of ram you would put this value "1024" in the 2 field. Click set.
Reboot computer.

my laptop is an IBM laptop as well
for me, problem is heat related. feel the bottom of the laptop sometime after playing for a few hours.
playing on a wood or glass desk makes the problem worse. I prop up the laptop on something small, and problem goes away.
when its overheating, my frame rate turns into a sin graph, once i prop it up, within 10 secs, it a smooth flat line again.
other than than I have no problems, client has never crashed to desktop, or disconnected when the problem was not my ISP. I worry about getting something faster only to run into these problems.

A word of advice: You generally want to set your page file to 3x the amount of RAM you have.

Official stance, and the default Windows stance, is to have 1.5x the amount of page file as you do RAM. If you have 1024MB of RAM, then you'll have a 1536MB page file, which means you would have 2560MB of 'RAM' as far as Windows is concerned.
Page file is just your Hard Drive, which is very slow compared to RAM. You probably won't notice any difference by upping your page file, unless you have a small amount of physical RAM to begin with. A better solution would be to increase the amount of RAM in the system itself.

Any special settings on that?
I sometimes have to use an P3/600 with about 380MB RAM and an old 32MB Geforce DDR. Makes about 15 frames/sec at 1024x768/16bit when in space and not too much stuff is around (asteroid belts *cough*). I'd say EVE is just about barely playable with that setup. |
