Edited by: Sythia Grae on 16/04/2006 15:51:00 Hi guys! I know it might be strange, but I was thinking the ferox would be a great mining ship. I would like to be able to mine in low sec space eventualy, but I am focusing on getting down into .5 asap regardless.
So I guess my questions would be:
1. How should I set the ferox up to be a killer miner? I was thinking for the high slots, using 5 Miner IIs and 2 Assault Launchers. But I don't really know what to do with the mids and lows. I was assuming that I will be some sort of shield tanker, but I'm not sure what would be the best way to do this....
2. Can you take a look at my current skills and advise me on a path to fly a mining Ferox well? I know I don't have the BC skill yet, but that should come along soon. But what else should I look into improving on? Skills
I really appreciate any advise, thanks!

Surely the osprey would be a better choice?
But anyway i guess you want some high rat specific resistances in your mids, if you are looking to mine in lower sec. Cap mods in lows. Mining setups aren't exactly the hardest things in the world.

Thanks for your reply! As far as the Osprey goes, I'm in on e now...and while its a good ship, I can probably get more lasers on the Ferox, as well as the Ferox being a tougher ship...seems like the next step up...am I wrong?
and you can see what lvl my skills are on the right of the character sheet...its got the same "bars" that are in game...unless I am the only person able to see them =P

At Cruiser III, the Osprey's mining bonus gives it the equivalent of 3*1.6 = 4.8 miner IIs. A Ferox with 5 miners would then only give a 4.16% mining advantage over the Osprey. And while the Ferox is more survivable, the Osprey can warp off faster.
If you're mining in highsec, you'd be making far too little money for your time, especially with a Ferox. Even mining hemorphite in 0.1 doesn't quite make you the money that running missions and 0.0 ratting do. So I'd suggest to get your combat skills up and start doing those. When you get secure access to 0.0 you can train for mining barge if the fancy takes you.

While you may be able to get more lasers on a Ferox, an Osprey still has a significant advantage to mining with it's ship bonus. Think of it this way: even with Caldari cruiser 3, the pre-requesite for a Ferox, the Osprey mines 60% more ore per laser which equates to an extra 2ish lasers worth of ore per cycle.
A Ferox can only mount 5 lasers as it is, yes it may have a bigger tank but it's not going to be sustainable as the lasers eat too much cap, and the shield booster will just burn it away. With passive tanking you are going to be losing out on extra shields because I think you are going to need at least 2 Co-procs to run 5 lasers and a shield tank.
To be honest I think the Brutix does it better

Osprey + Cruiser 4 + 2 Mining Upgrades
Its a damn nice miner that. :) As for dealing with .5 and above rats.. pfft.. fit a small tech 2 shield booster and just use the drone bay it has along with the single missile launcher you can fit to kill the rats.

my advice woud be to fit heavy missiles or 200mm rails and a passive sheield tank on your ferox (if you allready got it) and to go do l3 missions as that shoud give you more profit then mining untill you get the barge

Osprey with cruiser 4 or 5 is a better mining ship iirc.
Ferox on the other hand will tank much better, and you have 2 highs to throw launchers onto for some NPC defense, plus you have alot more cpu/grid to screw around with. Imo, nothing other than decent 0.0 BS spawns will break your ferox's tank. PCs are another story ofcourse.

Edited by: Zekk Pacus on 17/04/2006 00:48:42 A ferox can mine in 0.0 if you can setup the tank right (which I can), whereas with an osprey you have to ninja mine.
That said i'd just train up amarr and get a geddon.
EDIT: Although if you do want to use a Ferox, here's how to set it up for guristas tanking:
2x passive Thermal hards 1x passive Kinetic 1x active Kinetic 1x Med booster
Lows is whatever you need to fit that. You don't need the booster running constantly, twitch it on and off. Can tank anything up to and including a dual BS spawn, and i'd imagine could do the same in serpentis space and probably angel space with a bit of fiddling. But not sansha's space - shield tanking against EM is a nightmare.

I think the only proper use of a Ferox in a mining situation would be as cover/leader ship. Fit a Mining Foreman Link, and some appropriate defenses/offenses for the rat's in the area, and support a corp mininng op... provide the cover from rats, while boosting the mining rate of your buddies with the foreman link. The effects of a well trained mining director on a few barges will more than make up for what you would be able to mine in a ferox, along with letting you drop into some more profitable space.
