I noticed that if you take State war acadamy, operations, and command you take your frigate to lvl 4 at the beginning. This seems to equate to saveing you 10 days of training on aquireing the next ship class.
Is there a reason this would be a bad idea? I noticed you can buy most skills at lower lvls for 45k or less... wouldnt the time saved outweigh the money you would have to earn... or is money very hard to get in the early game?
Im a true noob in this game... but I was looking at the forums and playing with char combos up till now over my first 2 days just to get a feel for the game... and have realised that chooseing smart up front can save insane time on lvling skills later.
to be blunt i started one charecter and got a total of 7k skills nbut a diverse skill set choice... I chose what I describe above and had 90k skill points at start up.

If minmaxing is important to you, you got it in one. Even better, start one of the new characters that can get a key skill (Gunnery or Science IIRC) to Level 5, that's where the money is!
In the long run it isn't going to make a bit of difference. But it would be cool to be able to get all the T2 stuff that much (5 days) quicker.

If your goal is to get a better ship as quickly as possible, then yes, that is the way to go. This assumes that you know how to make enough money to afford your new ship, or course. Having all of thoese other skills will come in handy eventually, but like you said, they are not very expensive unless you are just starting out and have no cash on hand.

Some of the new bloodlines can start with gunnery to lvl5, much better timesaver, you start with the most skillpoints.

Frigate 4 would save about 3 days worth of training time. Frig 5 would save about 10 though.

It gives you time to get started on the different skills without losing the expensive frigates right there or even destroyers and cruisers. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray |

IMO it doesn't ultimately make much difference at all.
with the exception of people who decide to use larger ships or advanced frigates of their race... practically every skill you can start with at a high level... you *will* have trained there eventually.
remember SP != level. gross SP total means *NOTHING*. a 500k SP frigate could take out a character with like 10m if those 10m were all in science stuff, or if they were in a shuttle.
IMO your more likely to DEFINITELY want gunnery 5, and being ABLE to get into a cruiser right off is NOT always a good thing! newbs with a fraction of the skills to do what they want in a ship they can't do it in... is not pretty. its discouraging and expensive.
pay attention to attributes and that balance. nearly all skills you get as a noob you will train in the future past where you can get them as a noob anyway.
having a million SP to start wouldn't be a good choice if it meant you had 5 intel/perc.

I agree having a skill at level5 might lead a newbie into situations they shouldn't be in, having saved the training time from a level4 to level5, gives a powerful sense of 'progression'; the major time needed when training to level5 makes many players suffer from ennui. Personally, I would find starting a with one skill at 5 than 3 skills at 2 much more encouraging to continue in Eve, given the perceived 'black hole' time effect of training skills to level5.
I wish those new bloodlines had been around when I first started, that's for sure ;)
