Piracy and "blue collar" crimes, in general, are viewed as fair game in the EVE community.
Scamming, scheming, and white collar crimes, on the other hand, seem a lot more controversial. I hear a lot of people say that they think of it as something outside of normal moral EVE boundaries, and others who say it's just another way to make some ISK.
So I ask you: where do you stand on scamming in EVE? Fair game, or exceptionally awful?
Personally, I think that all is fair in love and EVE. My opinion may be a little biased, since I've never been a victim of a scam (nor scammed anyone else), but I generally harbor the philosophy that anything in EVE that doesn't involve a) hacking, b) messing with someone's account or c) the real world is within the realm of fair game. I agree with you, if the game allows it, it's fair game. The problem that people have with scams is not that they were scammed, but that they don't like admitting that they were dumb and or greedy enough to fall for them. |

Is there a line where you call it profit from lazy/greedy players and beyond that a scam?
My little trading alt (side project for fun) is about to hit the 100mil mark from trading only (never fired a shot) from his 5000 starter ISKies. Did I scam people? I wouldn't say so. I charged them for their lazyness.
The thing with margin trading is somewaht debatable in my view but the basic rule "if it looks to good to be true then it is too good to be true" (ergo a scam) applies in de facto all cases.
I fell to a pretty obvious scam and learned from it. So I basically paid pixel monies to learn something I can also apply in real life. It's somewhat of a win-win. |

Especially since most of the spam in Jita, Dodi etc is only really going to fool new players. There is always the block option of course.
I prefer Hek, most of the local conversation is posting killmails with comments like "look at the officer crap this idiot fitted" or asking stuff like "does anyone want to duel my Abbadon" .

I'm totally fine with scamming. In fact, I encourage clever scamming. Put some thought into it, make it elaborate. Make the tears run thick.
I've been scammed. Once. Lost a billion ISK. Up front, looked like a good deal. All seemed reasonable. Looking back on it, it was pretty obvious. I accept it, that's life. I can make it back in no time.
What I don't like are the 'scams' that are spammed 23.5/7 in busy systems. The people who fall for those are the uninformed. AKA. Rookies/Newbies. People who are likely to quit after losing any real amount of ISK.
It hinders the growth of the game and crushes any real live trade in the hub systems.
Props to CCP for going in and cleaning out on occasion, but something more permanent needs to be done there.

Margin scams are a grey area because victim cannot see that a buy order does not have enough isk to cover it - thats unfair. Margin trading scams rely on stupidity, drunkeness or greed, I know this because I've been caught by one though being both drunk, and greedy. Lesson learnt, I don't play drunk, often, and now diligently research anything that looks too good to be true, 99.999999% of the time it's a scam.
They're easy to avoid, all of the information required to figure out that A: the item(s) you purchased are way over market value, and B: that the buy order is also way over market value is readily available ingame. |

Though I do not scam, I have no problem with it being permitted in Eve in general. I dislike scams that rely on someone making a typographical error or scams based on someone not knowing the more obscure game mechanics (like margin scams, the old freeform contract scams, etc.). Most of all though, I hate scams that are boring, unimaginative copies of things others have done a million times by others. Also, the spam is just awful. I wish I could actually use local when I go to a trade hub.

The market in Eve works nothing like the real world, which allows some scams to persist. If I wanted to sell 1,000 shares of Google at market, that's easy and takes seconds or less. Sell 1,000 drakes? Of course that has to take freakin forever... so people put contracts up, or rapidly place endless orders and make pricing errors. Have 1,000 different items to sell? You might as well put up a hangar cleanout contract and hope someone with more time than you wants to scrape a small profit by spending literally hours selling the crap in Eve's market interface.
This is why I have been in favor of a market expansion for quite awhile. Margin should work like real margin, orders should work like real orders, etc. In game charting should be halfway decent and go back 10 years. Ideally, trusted 3rd parties could create custom trading software without compromising account security.
This will likely never happen though, so I'll just have to cobble together a trusted player-created alternative.
Once I unveil this project, players everywhere can rest assured their funds are safe, and they can avoid scams by using my service. See Bio for isk doubling rules. If you didn't read bio, chances are you funded those who did. |

In years of playing Eve, I've never been scammed.
Virtually all of the scams I see are taking advantage of someone's greed. If the 'victim' wasn't so greedy, looking for some angle himself- then no scam would ever work. People who don't bother reading a contract, people who are thinking with their wallets and not their heads.
I think it's hilarious when people get scammed in Eve. Not my play style to sit around a hub spamming bad contracts, but it is players creating content, which I always support. I refuse to punish player creativity in favor of dumbing down Eve so people don't even have to read something before clicking on it.
If you got scammed in Eve, there is no one to blame but yourself. While it's a popular topic, the number of players that have actually ever been scammed is tiny, being smart enough not to get swindled in the first place. The simple fact is, scamming isn't a problem for the vast majority of Eve. |

I totally agree.
Many upstanding business people in game aiming to double someone's ISK are treated very poorly when people can't follow the basic instructions set for a particular offer.
Those people who attempt to scam the business people out of their ISK by cutting corners should be ashamed of themselves.
Luckily though, most of those business people are always switched on because it appears that a lot of people try to get a pay off while breaking the rules. eve-bazaar - I'm not associated with them, but support it as a worthwhile service |

Fair game and can be so well executed that it becomes almost poetic. I know this is technically not a scam, but an in-game scam with a style similar to that is what I'd class as a brilliant.

While this should be easy i personally find it extremely difficult to answer this question as i find my self on both sides.
As others have mentioned, this is EVE, its a sandbox, everything (almost) is allowed, and EVE is (and should be) a harsh universe that makes you thin twice and punishes you for your mistakes.
So, on that side im for scams. At least some. Goons recruitment scam, all for it! Market and contracts scams, sure go ahead. Recruitment scams in general, not honoring ransoms, ISK doubling scams, whatever... I have no problem with it because its all in the game and does not hurt anyone in real life.
Quite frankly EVE would be pretty boring without the stories that occur because of scams and similar..indecent behavior.
Of course im sure some will say that it does hurt them in real life, that being scammed morally wrecked them and greatly affected their mental state, but if these people are actually honest i would say that EVE might not be for them.
However, some scams goes to far.
Scams that move "out" of game and attacks the person, or persons, in real life.
The best example i have of this is a group who used to find it really entertaining to find RIP threads, claim to be a relative of said person and say something like "***** greatest wish was to get a titan. In honor of his memory we will buy one and dedicate it to his memory. ISK can be sent to *****". This particular one abuses peoples grief, and also the people who just wish to show respect for a deceased EVE player, thus in my mind it crosses the line between real life and EVE. Luckily this one died out pretty fast, but it still left me with a foul taste in my mouth and made me wonder how low some people are willing to go in order to scam people.
For the next one, it will generally be a female thing, even if im sure there are men that does the same, or at least pretend to be females to archive the same result. Find a guy, make said guy "fall in love" with you, have them give you ISK and various other stuff and then cut contact. I really wish i wouldent have to list this one here since it sort of builds on a stereotype, but sadly it does happen, while not that often (i hope). Again i react because this messes with a persons feelings in real life, and abuses their mental state, thus moves "out of game".
Then there is one that i cant really...decide how i feel about.
Obtaining pictures, voice recordings and similar of people, making it public just to get as many people as possible to laugh at the person who got scammed. Sure the fact that the person fell for it in the first place is amusing, but again it crosses the line. When you take real life information about someone in order to "push them down in the mud" because the person wasent humiliated enough by getting scammed in the first place is (in my opinion) going to far.
But at the same time, these people must realize that going on a random voice chat and sing with a voice that makes a cats howling sound good, or sharing real life picture of them self (dressed or not) in order to "win" ISK is a bad idea! I mean, even if this was not EVE, where scamming is legal, i cant see why anyone would be willing to do this. After all, all they had to do was set their foot down, say no and close the convo. But who knows, i have never known anyone who has fallen for a scam like this (well ok, i will admit i have talked to one person who did something along these lines and in that case it was a smooth talking voice and a weak sport for charming men that caused it ) so maybe im just missing something.
So, while this scam enters "real life", it does not toy with your emotions or leave you without a choice. Instead you base it all on a 5 minute conversation with a complete stranger, and, quite frankly, when you choose to give all your assets to a person after that little time im leaning towards saying that this is that own persons fault.
But well. Personally i dont scam people. I know people who do, i know people who have been scammed, and i know people who has never fallen for one, and they are all good people.
TLDR; Please let the players keep having the freedom to keep execute scams. Like it or not, it creates history. Phoibe Enterprises official recruitment thread The Eve Reader - -áAudio Recordings of Eve Chronicles

From the point of view of game mechanics, scams are just another part of the game that bring diversity to EVE. Removing scams from the game would make EVE more generic and boring.
However, if you compare other aggressive parts of the game (pirating, ganking, ....) to scams, you can see why many are annoyed about scams - it's spam. Pure, uncreative, repetitive spam. I like when a new kind of scam hits the game. It adds to the gameplay for the whole community. What I don't like are repetitive scams that are in the game for multiple years and the worst part is, many of them are not even that creative. I'll list a few: - trade window scam where you name regular ship as its faction version. Seriously, be more creative; - plex scam where a 0 or two is missing; - plex scam where you pay ISK and plex to get plex; - ISK doubling... that one is the most annoying one. Every time I see one I feel like my IQ dropped a couple of points. - BPC instead of BPO scam. I don't know why this one is still around. They've fixed icons years ago and added text descriptions for each BP;
One universal reason why I don't like previously listed scams is that almost all of them target new players or players that are not familiar with the UI, game mechanics or the community.
There are, however, some of the old ones that I still like to see: - Carbon/Charon Proteins/Proteus scam. I like it because you can fall for it even if you are an experienced player who doesn't pay attention; - Fitted ship on contract with ship missing from the list of items. Same reason as the one above. - Margin trading scam because face it, it is creative. - Banks, stock markets and gambling sites because players who run them invest effort other than pure spam that later pays off. Spam part that is present with these types of scams is, however, annoying.
Personally, I don't like being involved in scams and I can recognize one when I see it very quickly.
I have only once profited from a margin trading scam when I noticed it being setup for a rarely used T2 item that I happened to have T1 blueprint for. I just quickly invented T2 blueprint, grabbed a bunch of materials that I already had, manufactured those items and listed them on Sell orders just below scammer's items. I later figured it's too time consuming to hunt down other plausible ventures like that since you never know which item is used in the scam and when. Something else that should be considered is that some of these "new" players who immediately join the game with tens of billions and tens of millions of skillpoints acquired such thing in a naughty fashion. According to Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, La Cosa Nostra would not exist without greedy people wanting something for nothing.
I don't think he takes into account the added expense to metropolitan infrastructure with regard to hauling away all those bodies, and having the mortuary space for them. Though, with regard to that, there is a plus in the employment arena; homocide detectives, forensics experts, even the coroner's office.
The court room arena seems to be 50/50 with soaring costs, however ample employment opportunity with a herd of assistant DAs, and of course the fabulous courthouse with its attendent slate of employees from the parking garage to mopping the floors.
The big however with New Eden is, the "state" has no real interest in combatting crime as there are no opportunities for ambitious attorneys and the like; for instance no outside chance to become a Supreme Court justice.
So, I'm like a lot of folks with regard to this. When I'm standing I'm usually standing right here. *points at "here"* I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility toward every form of tyranny over the mind of man.-á |

If you're dumb enough to fall for a scam in eve you have it coming my opinion its fair. I mean come on the saying goes if its to good to be true its a trap!! Also that mega on gate has a cyno just don't shoot the cyno bait. If you promise me that if I lend you 100m isk, and within 1 month you'll repay me 110m isk, and you choose to keep all of it and never return it, then you are a bad person for lying to me and stealing. *edit* just for clarification, having seen you support stealing, I'll never consider you worthy of being trusted. So don't even try.
LOL!!! Its a game man get over it. I'm trust worthy,To those I call friends not strangers who judge me on how I play a game. Its greed is why people get scammed. You're trying to say stealing in a game would reflect on someone in real life thats the real joke. I bet you the biggest and most dirtiest of scammers in eve are very easy going laid back people you will ever meet.
And just for clarification I wouldn't accept isk for your pod even if you had cookie with double chip chocolate. Blue

I used to consider scamming amusing but not something I'd do, until someone bought from an overpriced market order and the ISK went to me. I was debating returning the ISK (I think it was a 600m cap recharger or something) then the guy mailed me shrieking abuse. So I kept the ISK and told him as condescendingly as possible to treat it as a lesson learned. Think it's happened a few times since, the conversation always goes the same way, and I still don't feel the slightest twinge of guilt.
Similar thing happened when I was selling researched BPO sets at something like 300% markup. Someone mailed me screaming I was a scammer to which I retorted, nope, just greedy. He then demanded the BPOs at NPC price, which I ignored. Then some other idiot, ahem I mean valued customer, bought it.
You don't have to be an outright scammer to toe that line, especially when you are setting sale prices. If extortion is OK, don't see any problem with outright scamming, although as someone earlier said crossing the line into RL stuff is distasteful. - |

I think scams are good and should remain allowed as long as they can be averted with a little common sense. The Margin Trading scam is a bit dubious, as this is bordering on abusing game mechanics for your own gain since there is no way to discern if an order is legit or not. It also undermines trust in the market which makes trading harder. But then most if not all MT scams can be detected if you simply check prices or price history. Or simply think a moment about the advert basically saying: "OMG look at this order which you can make tons of money off but I rather shout about it than make that money myself".
Interestingly, spending a few days in Jita prepared me rather well for all the pitfalls and hooks in real life insurances and mortgages.

Scams are fine.
I think the cost of setting up/maintaining some irrational buy/sell orders however are just that, a bit irrational.
I dont even nearly completely understand the vagaries of margin trading and escrow, but I suspect there are some eleents there that need taking a look at. Player behavior is self-regulating, and the gross aggragate of that, is rational. When instances of irrarionality begin tomoccur, its a sign of the limitations of the environment external influences on that self-regulating player behavior.
I think CCP would do well to dedicate a future patch to an overview of trading, and see if they cant more closely model some elements of it on existing IRL trading systems, regulations, taxes, fees and types of buy/sell orders as well as financing them.
I dont consider those "scams". I rather consider themma result of the large part of essentially NPC based market elements and trade affecting elements being very static and undynamic, and the games system as a whole not being quite "finished" yet interms of an NPC system that would emulate the IRL elements of market authorities and regulators being sure they too get their cut.
POCOS was a good change in this direction, as players can set the tax they wish. But the NPC based authorities on stations and variousnfunctiins of stations, are completely undynamic (except for responding to Standing).
One example of this, is Jita. IRL a marketplace in such high demand would be charging a premium for people to do business on their premisis. Though Corp office rent scales dynamically with the demand, the price of doing business there, does not, because the NPC Jita authorities have not responded dynamically at all to demand of their services. (Except in the indirect fashion that a bottleneck has formed at entry points) |

I am really, really tired of hearing this lie repeated. [Edit: Hell's freaking bells, you even admit it yourself 2 sentences later.
Ok, I was a bit vague. There is no real hard proof in game generated by the client that shows you whether an order is going to be fulfilled. You can extrapolate from the price history using your own knowledge, but the information the client gives you is that someone offered a helluva money for that item. It's only my personal experience that says "if there's only that single order at that price, chances are high it's a scam". In fact, someone might ACTUALLY have made that buy order (mistyping the price or so) so it might be a legit offer, and there's no way to see it.

CCP should introduce some sort of gameplay mechanic for private detectives. These crimes should be investigated by other players!!
Seriously though, that would be cool. |

Overcoming adversity is a requirement of EVE. It's supposed to be hard. HTFU? Besides, scammers need love too. Have you hugged a scammer today? YK One friend who quit was never scammed. He quit simply because CCP "allows" scamming. He was fed up with that attitude, and he WAS a long term player already...

You sure do have lots of friends quitting EVE for pretty silly reasons... I'm starting to wonder if you're gonna make it yourself! Sounds like you're one scam and two ganks away from your own unceremonious exit.
Good luck!

You can already do that. A few people have claimed that they spent all of their wealth to prove I scam. Unfortunately, in their haste to make such a damning charge stick, they failed the rules.
I've been thinking lately...
What if I went undercover for the next year and actually scammed people on alts using a variety of scams we have seen here and other new ones. Is there really isk in it? Could I maintain my sterling reputation on my main if I did this? It's an interesting thought. See Bio for isk doubling rules. If you didn't read bio, chances are you funded those who did. |

There is already a mechanic. It's called Due Diligence
Allow me to introduce it to you:
Due Diligence - DD*
1. An investigation or audit of a potential investment. Due diligence serves to confirm all material facts in regards to a sale.
2. Generally, due diligence refers to the care a reasonable person should take before entering into an agreement or a transaction with another party.

Sometimes for fun, I like to check the contract histories of everyone offering contracts in local chat. The key is to pay attention to the character who sets up the contract, which is not necessarily the character spamming it.
I know that when I was new, seeing some get accepted on a regular basis was eye opening. Of course, you have to take into account the sheer volume of spam messages posted over many hours a month to get to those kind of results.
Who would buy a mispriced contract in Jita?
ALOT of people. See Bio for isk doubling rules. If you didn't read bio, chances are you funded those who did. |

ALOT of people. With 2100 people in Jita alone, it's not that odd to see at least one person fall for a (sometimes obvious) scam. I try to stay away from scamming myself, but I won't have a problem with anyone who does. It's all fair game. That's why I love EVE.
To avoid scams: - Check the item name. A Gneiss is not a Gnosis! - Count the zero's on big amounts of ISK - Double check everything - Don't do drugs (related song by Curzon Dax) You know who's going to inherit New Eden? Arms dealers. Because everyone else is too busy killing each other. |
