Edited by: Ange1 on 18/04/2006 21:08:19 Edited by: Ange1 on 18/04/2006 21:08:06 After wasting about 6-7 probes and about 30 mins of my time, I simply could not find this Battleship. You might think I wasn't using them properly or he wasn't in range, but if a bunch of 3AU probes can't find a target within 50 million km (1AU being 140 odd million km) then you know something is seriously wrong. Because of this, my target eventually logged off when I should've found that target.
Has anyone had similar situations?

Just to confirm I too have tried to scan a hauler down today using 3 totaly diferent locations for 3 AU probes (all well within rage yet far enough apart from eachother) and they failed to find the target.
We need some consistancy here as since the last major content expansion they seem to be going downhill massivly.

For information, please submit a BR with your exact scanning protocol and exactly how you determine and choose the positioning of your probes to ensure that the ship you are scanning for is within the triangle created by the probe placement.
Also include the system you are scanning in and a rough approximation of where in the system you are looking (screenshot with red dots of the scanner profile please).
A logfile of your scanning protocols in action should also be included within the zipfile you attach to the BugReport.

Oh btw: Are there any valid reasons, why ships, which I can see on my range-scanner, are not found using an Observator Deep Space Probe? It happened last time for me with battleships, which were located at a POS (don¦t have any logs...).

Looks like you didn't read the probe description. It scans everything OUTSIDE its scanning range, which is 1au. Thus, anything that you see on the scanner with range set to 1 au, won't be found with Observator. This, in fact, is rather handy feature - sometimes when you scan for several objects of the same type, once you've found one of them, you want to exclude it from further scans to decrease the number of combinations, so just launch Observator right next to this object. If you want to scan everything in the system, just create a 50au safe and launch Observator there.

CCP, really, I donĘt see the complication in fixing the scan probes.
It doesnĘt need an UI overhaul to make them work. It just needs getting a list of all ships of a certain type in the solar system (system scanner can do this, so there's no excuse), doing Pythagoras on the XYZ distances between my ship and those on the list to get the distances, filter out those outside the scanrange, then add the scanning variation to the remaining list and return the list to the client.
Honestly, what's so hard with this that it takes ages (more like years) to be fixed?!

Edited by: Snake Jankins on 20/04/2006 23:24:14 Still figuring out how to use them right and efficiently. But I've really experimented with scan probes for first time today. So I'm not sure, if it's my fault due to bad placement, when some scans failed.
But I've read that observers and 192 AU probes are not working/usable at the moment except for safe spot creation and that's definitely not true.
I've created a supersafe today that was about 90 AU from the sun and it was probably about 60 AU above the system plane. I placed another char there with an interceptor and was able to probe him down by using observers, 192 AU probes and the other ones ofc. Only problem is that I don't know, if it always works and that it took me a lot of time.

Yes, that's already true because of safe spot hopping. A few months ago i was on safe with my indi in a hostile systems and 4 or 5 coverts were probing me. I always waited, until the pilots have launched their 3AU probes and then I moved to the next spot. After dozens of probes they lost interest. ___________ 'Only ships can be assembled, this is a Frigate.' |

I suggested a "warp contrail" detection system for this, but it's not like it'll ever be implemented.
