I recently came across a war target in a belt, mining in a barge. I obliged by destroying barge and podding the player, who now seems to think that a retriever was not a valid target....
Anyone else agree here? Or am I just feeling a pang of unnecessary guilt for killing someone so clueless?

Well war is war. Everything that flashes red is a valid target. And in 0.0 everything that's not shiny blue goes boom...at least in my book. ROA Recruitment Mercs 4tw :) |

Of course it is.
Simple equation: Barges mine ore which is refined into minerals, which in turn are used to sustain war effort/ build ships that gank you at the end. So the enemy mining ops are targets of choice in any war

You'll quickly get over it if you kill a few more. -----

Economic pressure is the main way in Eve to win a war. Too much economic pressure will force your enemy to either cease their war if they initiate it or surrender to terms if you initiated it. Killing his barge was a way of increasing the economic pressure on his corp (loss of mining income + ship replacement).
If they think their mining barges should be invulnerable to attack they are living in the wrong universe...

Disrupting their operations by destroying their ships, cutting off their supplies and generally making their lives hard is... not what a war is supposed to be about? Errr.... __________________________________________________

Better to kill a Retriever than a BS in war-terms.

Not a valid war target?
Invite him onto Ventrilo, then laugh at him. Loudly, til you fall out of your chair gasping.
Then pay a locator agent, and go pod him again.
