I was researching Secure Cargo Containers and wasn't clear on something.
All Secure Cargo Containers have a password protection so no one can open them but you. Now, the ones with Anchoring simply does not allow another player to take your Container. Is this correct? From what I heard over chat the only difference is that Anchored Containers cannot be taken by another ship, but if they don't have the password what good is it to them?
So, the bottom line question is what is better to get? The Containers WITHOUT Anchoring have more cargo room which I want, but if they can be stolen what's the point. The Containers WITH Anchoring are much more expensive but they cannot be stolen.
Thoughts? --

All Secure Containers can be made secure upon jettisoning the container and anchoring it. It is not secure just because it was jettisoned. It is only secure when anchored and passworded.
It is not secure in your ship whether or not it has a password; because it is not anchored.
If you are blasted and your ship pops these containers, you may have time to anchor it or you may not. To be honest, I would not count on being able to anchor at that time, as there are distance requirements from ANY other object. And an Indy usually is carrying more than one of these.
So the "secure" container can be scooped by anyone if not anchored. The use? Essentially the scooper can repackage the container and use it or sell it.

Secure containers cannot be access without a password when locked. However, this does not prevent one from repackaging the can and having its contents automatically taken out.
When you drop an unanchored can, someone can still scoop it wit a hauler, take it back to a station, repackage it, and get to its contents, passworded or not. _____________________________________________________________________ Thar be Pirates

Is it true (as I see everywhere) that you can scoop another player's Giant Secure Container, if it's floating in space but not anchored?
Does the password status of the unanchored GSC make a difference?
I ask because I cannot seem to do this. I've got me a badger and I can launch/anchor/unanchor/scoop my own giant secure containers. But when I approach a drifting GSC that's not mine, I can't find a user interface method to scoop it. With my own can, if I look at the can and right click it, I get "scoop to cargo bay" as an option. Not so with other cans.
So how is this done? Or am I misunderstanding that it's supposed to be possible?

Is there a way to tell if a Secure Container is anchored or not?

Color -- unanchored containers are white, like the loot cans from the NPC pirates or like a jet can. Anchored containers change color -- they look yellow to me, but I've got color vision issues so who knows really.

There are sec cans in 1.0 and 0.9. They were anchored years ago, and just granfathered into it. You can't anchor now. ---- EVE-Central.com | Obsidian Technologies - 0.0 Manufacturing, Defense and Logistics. We're hiring! Mail me |

Ah, I think the color in the overview only tells you who owns the can (you, your gang, or someone else).
The way I can tell if a can is anchored is "Look At" it. There are lights on the can. Red, anchored. Yellow, in the process of anchoring. Green, unanchored.

OK, so what does it mean when a Giant Secure Container floating in space is white, but it doesn't belong to me or mine?

Ah, OK. I've seen the green lights on my own can before anchoring; I can't see the red lights at all because of my color vision.
That explains why I couldn't scoop the "white" cans -- they were probably anchored. But it leaves me deeply confused about why they were white.

So if you have a secured and anchored container it should be perfectly safe from being picked up and repackaged?

Should be, yes. If someone did manage to pickup a passworded and anchored secure container, then the only way they could have done it, is by guessing or knowing the password.

So, in the long run there is no real point in getting a Cargo Container that is not Secure AND Anchored. I mean, if it's not Secure anyone can open it. If it's not Anchored anyone can take it.
I wonder why there are even Containers that don't have both since it seems like a total waste of use. It's too bad since the Non-Anchored Containers have much more cargo room than the Anchored ones. --

OK, another night's play and I've answered my own questions. The anchored white cans are owned by members of my (newbie) corp. And an unanchored can with flashing green nagivation beacons does indeed scoop nicely into the hold of my Badger, even when it's named "Deathbringer's Cargo: KEEP AWAY!"
