gotta rember though some may scoff at the queen and say they leech off the tax payers... she and charles actually do pay tax voluntarily, and the royal family has done a vast ammount of charity work over the years, not to mention been ambassidors to a multitude of nations, would you like to spend hours with people like tony blair sucking up to you?

Originally by: Viktor Fyretracker ok im a bit rusty on this but isnt the Queen more of a figurehead today, last i knew Blair was running england. or does she still have say in what goes on.
The prime minister of the country is good old tony blair, like the president of the US. But the crown (the queen) is a kinda figurehead of the country. While most of her powers have diminished, she's still has an important role in the country. Most things are down in the crown's name (where as long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away the king/queen ruled absolute). Powers such as declaring war, making treaties, the employment of the cicivl service is done in the name of the crown.
However, a but, and a big butt, the queen still has the responsbility of
1) making sure that there is a functioning goverment, as the queen has lived through liveds of labour/converative rule.
2) when election time comes, it's the prime minister who has to ask her to close down parliament.
3) if the moment came where neither political party won the majority vote, it would be for the queen to decide and ask 1 party to make a working goverment.
In theory she could dimiss a goverment, but in practical terms, it would be unlikely,
oh and she also give's knighthoods, of which i have 1

Doubt it will ever happen but she can do it.
In theory. In practice, that power is only useful should a Government try to subvert our democracy - say by passing an Act that abolishes general elections and leaves themselves in power permanently. The Queen (or King) could refuse to sign it, and dissolve Parliament forcing an immediate general election, against the Government's wishes.
For anything short of that, the monarch refusing to sign a bill passed by Parliament would lead to an abdication in very short order.
I don't think that would happen. Royal Assent to bills is ALWAYS given .She doesnt actually do it herself, it's done for her under the perogative. But If parliament did pass the bill, then refusing to give assent would be going aginst the public's wishes, as they have a mandate to do so.
There could always be a revoloution

I think you'll find that he went to Gordonstoun, not Eton.
Anyway, whilst the current system is far from perfect, the argument against a republic can be summed up in two words.
I can't tell you what they are, as political duscussion is frowned upon although the first one rhymes with dent, and the second one rhymes with flair.

On the subject of corgis, the Queen was given her first during the height of rationing in World War II.
They told her that it was a chicken.
She said that it was delicious.
