Whether CCP takes the services offline or those behind the DDoS force it offline through their attack it gets the same results.
Seems CCP might be showing they won't simply be pushed off. |

I (and not just me) had this "Socket closed" thing started way before the first recent "DDOS" attack...
IMO, the question is, how long can you blame everything on DDOS attacks? |

This might be the best way to go TBH. I have genuinely found myself not doing any PVE as I don't want to loose a ship - even if CCP reimburse all DDOS related losses it will still take them a month to get to the petition.
Attempted some light PVP lastnight, and every 10-20 minutes my cloaky with eyes on targets would disconnect and give away everything.

Not had a single connection problem today (from the UK). Ddos protection won't be geographically consistent though - prolly all of Russia is blocked at present :-) |

Good luck with that, some people just like to watch the galaxy burn. When lulzsec ddosed EVE they made sure everyone knew about it, same when DERP ddosed Phantomlord (and EVE got caught in the crossfire). This time nobody is taking credit which makes me doubt the "watching the world burn" story.
On the other hand using frequent ddos attacks to blackmail/extract a protection fee from a relatively small MMO provider such as CCP makes a lot of sense to me - they have limited means to protect against DDOS attacks (compared to giants like Blizzard) and frequent disruptions of service do really threaten their business. |

Blaming DDOS attacks for the problems is all well and good but then depriving paying customers of a paid for service and blaming DDOS attacks is not good.
While CCP can't control the attacks, like any good business they should compensate the paying customers for the disruption caused by said attacks, like any business events beyond the control of the business are the business's problem not the customers.

Yeah, I was thinking blackmailers too. That happens all the time with sites that need high uptime %s - for example, sports gambling sites get ddosed during the world cup something horrendous.
I know a lot of gambling sites in the past have just paid up, because it's sometimes not a lot of money demanded. They'll never admit it though, just makes them a target for others.

If you've discovered a way to protect servers from a DDOS attack while still connected to the internet, the congratulations, you're going to become very wealthy, since no one else on the planet has been able to do that. (null routing doesn't count).
Also, if you actually pay say $100 to DDOSers to stop an attack, then the next day they'll come back saying "we want $1000", then "we want $10,000" the next day, until you run out of cash. Seriously, paying just puts a huge target on your back saying DDOS FOR FREE MONEY.

Ha i don't think anyone here would want CCP or any other company to give in to demands (if any were made) i'd sooner the servers were shut down for a week. CCP would reimburse for any substantial loss to players.
Its probably more likely some little spotty spec wearing **** bag that didn't get enough hugs and kiss's from mummy and daddy, and is masturbating to these comments that's doing it. |
