"Faction" stuff - shadow serpentis, true sansha, dark blood, domination, dread guristas, is the most common, and you can find this by killing similarly named belt npcs, or finding them in some missions. You used to be able to get them as LP offers from pirate agents as well, not sure if this is still the case. Note - true sansha is different from, for example, true centii - the first is rare, the second is common in complexes/deadspace missions, and doesn't drop faction stuff. There is also empire faction stuff, such as caldari navy mods, that you can get by killing faction npcs on missions for pirate factions. Again, you used to be able to get these through LP offers as well, but I don't think that's still the case.
"Officer" stuff - e.g. Thon's modified invulnerability field, only drops from officer rats. As far as the officers belonging to one of the main five pirate factions, you only find these in asteroid belts in 0.0 (and perhaps in the occasional complex). Some of the non-pirate ones appear in level 4 missions/important missions, especially for pirate agents.
"Complex" stuff - e.g. Gist x-type 100MN MWD, is found in complexes. The name gives a hint as to where it drops; names ending in -ii are "frigate" loot, and so will drop in lower end complexes, names ending in -um are "cruiser" loot, and so will drop in middle end complexes, and names ending in -us, or with no suffix, are "battleship" loot, and so will drop in high end complexes. The "type" of the loot also indicates this, where c-type is worst, x-type is best.
Not sure if this rule is adhered to 100% (I don't think it is), but as a rough guide:
1/10 - ii c-type 2/10 - ii b-type 3/10 - ii a-type 4/10 - um c-type (though the serp 4/10 doesn't actually drop anything afaik) 5/10 - um b-type 6/10 - um a-type 7/10 - c-type 8/10 - b-type 9/10 - a-type 10/10 - x-type
E.g. gistii a-type mods drop in 3/10 complexes (though I think there's a bug where they drop in the serpentis, rather than angel, complexes)
corpum a-type mods drop in blood 6/10 complexes
gist b-type mods drop in angel 8/10 complexes
centus x-type mods drop in sansha 10/10 complexes
As there are no guristas 10/10 complexes in game atm, pith x-type loot doesn't drop. Similarly, as there's a lack of low end complexes, some nice loot is "missing", such as the complex small armor repairers. ---
