Hi all, I'm new to EVE. Currently on the trial account, but I love it. Just waiting on a paycheck before I upgrade to full :)
I'm a hard-core miner in EVE. I avoid fighting completely (have some buddies who often tag along and kill for me), and have all my skills/etc in mining and refining related stuff. My current ship is a Probe frigate, with 2 mining II lasers, and all expanded cargoholds in my low power slots. I have 2 mining I drones who play along with me.
I have a few questions about where I can go next:
1) What would be a good ship upgrade for me? Is there a better mining frigate than the Probe? 2) Can I mine in an industrial? I know they can only mount 1 laser, but speed isn't a concern for me. I'm in no hurry, and the cargo holds on these big ships really appeal to me. I have no problem at all just sitting in a belt for a while filling up an enormous hold. 3) What is strip mining? >< (sorry, really noobish...I couldn't find a simple definition on this, just guides on where to do it etc.) 4) I don't like the though of mining into a can, then leaving it there while I go get my hauler to pick it up. Is this the only "real"/efficient way to mine? (see #2) 5) Non-related to the others...how do I find a good corp to join? I want to get involved with one and meet some people, but all the recruitment ads I've seen are all gung-ho on 'experience players' and 'at least 1 mill SP' and 'gotta be in 0.0' and whatnot...what's a noob with 100k SP and a fear of <0.5 like me to do re: finding a good starter corp?
Thanks for any tips you guys might have. I'm having a lot of fun so far, coming from WoW this game is a HUGE improvment, both in the game itself and the community.
Cheers, Verad Zel

1) Your next ship will be a Scythe cruiser. It's the Minmatar's best mining ship and has a 20% bonus to yield/cruiser level. After that you'll want to aim for Barges.
2) Yes, if you're not in a hurry, it's not a bad option. Though they're not very good for lower sec mining as they have little to no defense.
3) Barges use strip miners instead of regular miners.
4) You can use Secure Cans in 0.7 or lower space. They're fairly efficient, though not nearly as much as jet cans are.
5) Check the recruitment forum and ask around in game.

If you are looking for a new-player friendly corp who welcome and support starting miners then send me an eve-mail ingame so can provide you with more information on what we might be able to do for one another.

Your next upgrade as a miner is the Scythe.
Look for it in the market and start saving for it.
The best way to mine, is to find a good corp that does alot of mining ops and knows what its doing. Go there in your probe, join the corp, ask when and where the mining op is, go to the op, park yourself near a can, ask what ore you should be mining, find that ore in overview, and start lasing the appropriate roids.
As a miner the skills you want are :
Mining 4 Minmatar Industrial 4 Minmatar Cruiser 4 Astrogeology 4
Get those skilled up as soon as you can.
After that you can specialize further, and start training for a mining barge.

Thank you for the replies, guys.
I went out with a group of RL buddies into 0.3 and 0.4 last night for the first time. We did a ton of mining, while others kept spawns clear. Made quite a bit of cash, and had fun doing it!
Thanks for the tips, I almost have enough cash for a scythe now! Just gotta get some skills up :)

Ah hell, sorry man. I instinctively hit block without even thinking, as I didn't recognize your name. Mistake on my part ><
I'll be on later tonight, I'll unblock you the second I log on. I'll throw you a convo.
Peace.

I mine right now in a Scythe. It is pretty decent. I fit 3 mining IIs and jetcan mine. Then i run back and pick up my Hoarder to collect my ore. Our corp (really small-5 members) has hooked up with a solid bunch that runs mining ops all the time. The have protectors that fly with us. If i dont have any protection, I mine into a anchored can(password protected). If you are looking for a group, Na Geanna Fiaine is our corp. We would be happy to have you. Hit up Jaden Brock or Nyabinghi on eve-mail or chat. Goodluck.

Just want to thank everyone who has convo'ed or mailed me in the last day or so. You guys have been incredibly helpful. My corp hopes and plans have been put on hold for right now due to RL reasons >< But you guys have still been extremely great with advice, corp offers, and help!
EVE has an incredible community, I'm finding this out in my first 6 days of play only :D Much thanks again everyone!
Cheers, Mr. Zel
