Why are Lesser Gurista Covert Research Facilities so much more dangerous that the other sites? I lost my first cruiser (it could sail through any security 2 mission with ease) in a blink of an eye. Couldn't even try to go back to loot my wreck. (Although, the rats were so dangerous maybe that's for the best.)
Sure, there was a popup message warning. But there's one for the Gurista Hideway next door too, and it's guarded by a few tiny ships that do 10 damage a shot. I thought this site was just a place to tryout the hacking minigame from the training missions, not a deathtrap. Is the point to lure in and destroy new players? (If so, it worked perfectly. ) It was just a .7 system. |

Well I did some quick research on the site itself and apparently there is a chance of finding the "Shattered Villard Wheel" in that site, along with covert research tools.
After some quick searches discovered this thread regarding the wheel: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4022623
So Im thinking because of potential importance in the future for that wheel, you kinda need to be "tuff enuff" to get it.
Meanwhile, a cruiser that melts the rats in one site wont necessarily melt all rats in all sites. Research the sites first before jumping in - Google "Lesser Gurista Covert Research Facility" or whatever. I do this every time. I have lost too many of my own cruisers in sites too dangerous for me - then went back in a battle cruiser (poorly fit) and lost that too.
Last of all. Have you maxed out your "Caldari Cruiser" skills? Or whatever faction cruiser you fly. Defense is great for PVE. Along with support skills.

You haven't played EVE until you've lost a ship you weren't expecting to lose :)
Those 'Covert Research Facilities' are a Rubicon addition.
They don't follow the 'normal' patterns for exploration sites and are fairly nasty.
If you are the first to them, hack a can quickly then GTFO. If you aren't the first there, run run run run because the whole place is going to blow up soon. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=318489 - Proposal for a new type of tech 2 Destroyer If you want to mine in highsec, read www.minerbumping.com. |

The "Lesser Guristas Covert Research Facility " is a ghost site which is extremely deadly for new players, I would suggest researching them as they are hard to describe besides a recent addition. null sec and wh ones can destroy super tanked t3's with just the explosion. Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if your in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. |

Basically Ghost sites are Data sites with a hidden timer. The timer is activated as soon as someone warps to the site. Once the timer runs out, Rats warp in, and shoot all the cans, which explode for around 6000 explosive damage, with a radius of 5KM IIRC. Then they shoot at you for a bit, then warp off.
You have to be very quick in ghost sites. Warp in, Lock all 4 cans, use a cargo scanner to identify the most valuable can, hack it, and warp out. This is if you are doing it in a frigate. In a cruiser, you can tank the cans explosion if you have it set up properly.
Also, if you fail a can hack, it will explode instantly. Just a heads up. Eve will make you work a solid month all on your own for your first cookie. Then kick you in the nuts and take that cookie, and laugh at you for thinking you could have a cookie at all. |

Haha, thanks for the links and the good info. I think I'll just put these sites on my "things to avoid in EVE" list for now.
I can definitely testify to how deadly these things can be. I was in my Moa with the built in resists and even one of the 25% resist all hardeners running, and the rats that showed up still did around 1000 damage in one volley. (Not like a real tank I've read about, but pretty safe for anything I'd run into before that point at 6k shields.) I hit warp on something as soon as I could, and had just enough time to notice I was warp scrambled before the thing I'd been parked next to exploded. |

As far as I know, the rats don't attack you, they attack the containers.
You however get hit with blast damage, which can destroy an unprepared cruiser. |

These sites are exceptionally easy - if you know the trick. As people have said there is a hidden timer - when the timer is done the site explodes for a certain amount of damage. You will only have time enough to hack two of the cans at best. Before the site explodes the npc will spawn. After the site explodes, the npc will shoot you for a few secs then warp off. Killing the npc is pointless as they do not have bounties and drop nothing. So basically you have two options, when you see the npc spawn (yes you have to add them to the overview), you gtfo - by warping off or at least getting out of the explosion radius; or you can simply tank the explosion. The exact amount of damage the site does is posted on quite a few web sites - i forget but i think its like 5k? Anyways, it is easy enough to fit a ship that can tank the damage - once you do that the site becomes trivial. I don't play, I just fourm warrior. |
