Edited by: Benilopax on 26/04/2006 15:10:37 I have been recruiting new players for my corp recently and one thing has struck me. None of them seem to know how to use their autopilot even after the tutorial has completed.
I think perhaps this needs to be addressed within the tutorial if it is not mentioned and if it is something needs to be clarified.
Any thoughts? ------------------------------ Benilopax touched by an Avon!

Edited by: Miss Anthropy on 26/04/2006 15:23:55 Yes, I have a thought. Beat them to death with a tea spoon. Obviously they haven't done the tutorial and have just jumped right in expecting fun and frolics all the way. Auto piloting is mentioned in the tutorials when you first create a character.
My guess is that when they started the game they quit the flight tutorial. Either that or they simply weren't paying attention (understandable because I didn't pay attention to everything in the tutorial when I first started playing EVE). Still, they deserve a thorough tea spooning for not paying attention.

Using autopilot is covered quite well in the tutorial, it's their lack of attention that's to blame.

Autopilot is confusing at first, because of the bug (?) with checking "avoid systems with podkills". I checked that at my first visit to the map and the ap doesnt work with it.

im a brand new player, and auto pilot makes perfect sence to me.... i did the entire tutorial except for the last 2 steps which bugged out on me. the noly reason for the other new guys to not know it is yes, they didnt do the tutorial. i know its boring and long but its gotta get done to know what you are doing.

STUF okey, I couldnt use it when I started in january forever cause nowhere did anyone explain about the feature "avoid pod kill bla bla". So it took me 2 freakin days to find a guy who could explain this, cause everyone in rookie channel are retarded. And the tuturial aint all that, I wouldnt know 80% of what I did after a weeks playing without help from ppl and reading forums, watching movies and "trial & error"...

the pod kills thing needs to be changed as long as corp war allows podding in empire space, because of course big hub systems are important for empire side logistics there is lots of podding there when two corp are at war and it throws off the maps.

edit, only like 1% of the game with everything is covered in the tuturial, and most of the "noob helpers" make it worse when trying to help. Man their needs to be an ISD person at rookie channel 24/7 really...
I asked in local and got the answer straight away. I believe the tutorial even encourages you to talk to people.
Furthermore, with the lastest patch, the "avoid pod kill zones" is automatically off
And yes, you are very right. Whatever is covered in the tutorial is a very small fraction of what you need to know as a new player, maybe like 5%... but if you don't know 100% of those 5%, you will know nothing, so those 5% are very important.
Oh, and i'd love to "STUF"... but there is no such accronym... damn.... no "STUF" for me

yeah guess thats your "alt" but latest patch? hmm well just like 1-2 months ago it wasnt turned off automatically. Still see from time to time just a few days ago ppl whining about the problem needin help.
And about you gettin an answer straight away thats nice for you, so what? I see ppl all the time that dont get one, sometimes for a very long time. And about talkin to ppl, that has nothin to do with it, for example, I see ppl every day tellin noobs you aint even allowed to pvp at all for a year
And its more like 1% actually. And yes you need to learn that, I didnt argue that did I? "STUF" stands for shut the **** up! now you know... (love ppl that claim what is and what isnt in a language, language is what ppl speak and write, thats the difference between the professor and the low-grade teacher.)

I've seen people in the rookie help asking why their AP isn't working as well, i'm pretty surprised they never check their setting's on the map screen after the tutorial has gone over it all with them.
Also some people are quite rude to those trying to help out, if they can't get an answer within 3 people asking/replying to the channel they post again, then again and not always politely.
It doesn't help when people ask in cap's either, some refuse to believe those who reply unless they reply in teal/blue etc
I've not seen people get an answer for a very long time, i've not seen your name in the channel either during the past week.
In fact from what i've seen the player's try to answer everyone's question's as they can, people have to remember though they are PLAYERS themselves .. not around just to answer every question someone may have.
If they are that stuck and can't get an answer they can read the manual or the forum, god's forbid they lose precious time in-game.

As a noob myself (all of 5 days playing) I have to say that the turorial does cover the autopilot well enough that I could pretty much go straight out and zip through multiple systems on autopilot without a hitch.
The autopilot part of the training mission runs you through setting and clearing waypoints, setting and clearing a destination, it tells you about the settings and the optimise button, it also give a quick explaination of bookmarks by getting you to use one. It then asks you to buy something in a distant system to show you the assets and market windows and then instructs you to set it as your destination. You have to go out to another system and then back to your starting station (that it told you to bookmark earlier).
If people don't know how to use the autopilot then they have likely ignored the tutorial and the multitude of reminders that pop up during the noob missions. These messages in the starter missions are just as much a part of the turorial as anything else in the game.

When I started the game (with my main account) there was practically no help whatsoever. No guide, dodgy help channel, rubbish tutorial, and no 'hold-your-hand-here-is-an-excel-spreadsheet-which-tells-you-how-to-do-everything' sites.
New players now have a massive advantage in terms of easing the learning curve. I am all for anything that makes new players have to think rather than be babysat.
If they can't work out how to use the autopilot, they should go and play WoW.
