By the end of the week, I will finally be able to own my first cruiser (Gallente). However, could you tell me what should be minimum level of the critical skills that would be needed to fly the ship properly? Most of the important skills (elec/eng/mech/nav/etc.) are all at lvl 3 or 4. Will those suffice? Should I also train for medium weapons before venturing out with the new boat, or will larger frigate weapons be sufficient for a Vexor (and possibly a Thorax?!)?

I absolutely do not want to tote my cruiser out of the station and only be able to fly it half-arse and/or be fitted with crappy or insufficient modules. I would rather spend more time in my Merlin/Tristan training more skills than hop on the cruiser with barely adequate ability to fly the a barely adequate rig.

For the most part, if your not using medium guns why are you flying a Cruiser? :) There are exception of course such a Thorax with heavy plates and small hybrids but in general you want to use what your ship was designed for. Normaly this is Medium guns. Of course if your using a Drone or NOS boat your gunnery skills are not nearly as important but in this case you need to have good Drone skills.

I would strongly suggest getting Engineering up to 4 if not 5, same with electronics. You have so much more base CPU and Grid that these will make a huge difference on fitting your ship. I would also suggest that all your core gunner/missile skills be at least 3 if not 4.

Note a great deal will depend on what you want to use the ship for. Of couse mining you can do now easily, though trying to run missions or low sec rat hunting may be a bit more of a problem but a lot can be corrected with tactics.

To fly the Vexor you will want to fill out drone skills to 3's and some 4's, and Drones to V for max in space. Other than that, 3's and 4's in basic skills is plenty to get started.

Depending on how you play, frigate weapons are fine for cruisers. A vexor's main weapons can be its drones. Alot of people use frigate blasters in the Thorax also. If you want to be more of a snipe from distance player, then medium rails will be better.

 Heres what I recomend.

Frigate, lvl 1 in all combat/nav/electronics/enginerring and so on.
Cruisers, lvl 2 in all those.
BC's lvl 3 in all those.
BS's lvl 4 in all those.

 this also goes along with

 Frigates in lvl 1 missions
 Cruisers in lvl 2 missions
 BC's in lvl 3 missions
 BS's in lvl 4 missions

There's a nice non-sticked thread about this somewhere. I can't remember the title but I know F'nog wrote it

I expanded on F'Nog's post a bit and made up the "EVE Skills Roadmap" which works in game. Still need to finish some of it though.

*thumbs up* thanks all for the replies. I do have the post bookmarked, although it is only the roadmap of the skills, which I have digested several times. I appreciate it nonetheless.

As far the question for the skill levels that should is needed for flying the ship, that was also covered (: I realized that a cruiser with small guns and light missiles is rather anemic. But having just been kicked out of the rookie help channel *cry*, I noticed that a few of them were in a rush to get the ship just to fly it. That was exactly what I wanted to avoid (:
