I am planning on running a multi-box 5 character setup for mining in null sec. I have rorqual boosts already and was wondering what the best setup would be for obtaining the highest yield while not having large amounts of ore blown up by neuts.
The two different options that I am contemplating are a straight 5 miner (hulk) setup with enormous freight containers. Dump the ore into the containers and then haul it once the container or few containers are full. The problem with this setup is that if neuts come into system and I have full cans sitting on grid they usually get popped. This obviously leads to losses on the order of 250Km3 in ore. These losses can be as big as 100 mil or even more.
The second possible setup would be 4 mining hulks with an orca to dump into. This would allow me to get ore off grid when neuts come into system but would lead to an overall loss in mining yield of 20%. I don't need the boosts as they are already constatnlt |

Depends on how fast you can fill the orca really and how fast you can go back and forth to tower/station.
Orcas are nice because you have a 10 second warp time with MWD, but you lose space in cargo if you use that since you can't fit it without the rig or losing a low slot.
Alternatively you could go with freighter and just mine into an enormous can then warp off when you see nuet intel. But that's 82 second warp out time.
For can mining in general though, I don't do it anymore and sold all my hulks to switch to macks. If the large cans had more HP then you could justify leaving them on field and coming back potentially but they are too easily killed. So I just mine till full and do a trip. It's the least risk method and least hassle. The loss in ore is worth less hassle and risk of losing a set of cans.
Multi-boxing is a bit rough but with 5 characters, you might be able to manage macks. If you think you can do that, then I'd suggest that route. If not, Orca maybe but I'd bet you'll have just as much, if not more, to manage that setup than just running straight macks. Plus, you gain 20% more yield, which should make up for the lost Hulk bonus. GÇ£Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain - and most fools do. GÇ¥ - Dale Carnegie

That is a very good point. Currently with 4 hulks and an orca I can mine a full orca in about 15 minutes. I have no data on the macks. How long does it take to fill that ore hold? If it is similar to those 15 minutes you are right it will be way better.
Still looking for advice so feel free to post your responses/setups guys. |

I use the Hulks/Orca method (also with 5 toons). But this is in pretty safe space, and since I watch local/dscan like a cracked out hawk, I have yet to lose anything. If you want to go the safer route, I would suggest the Mackinaws since they hold almost as much as the Orca (5x35km3=175km3) and they will cycle out to almost the exact same time (due to bonuses). Just fleet them all up, have them all follow the one in squad leader position and when you need to unload/run, just fleet warp and you're all good. One more thing to keep in mind - it takes 4 Hulks to make the Orca worth its while, but 5-6 Hulks to make the Rorqual worth its fuel. |

Thank you for the good response. The rorqual however is up as a corp. thing and will almost always if not always be there for me. So i dont really get any benefit from the use of the bonuses from the Orca at all. It is purely a hauling platform. |
