I've played eve for less tahn 30 days and still deciding if i first want to focus on mining or kill pirates to make isk.
I find it boring to just go from asteroid belt to asteroid belt killing NPCs. But, on the other hand i really want to train as a fighter and to do that I need isk.
I was considering building up some mining skills first as an auxillary way to make money, but I'm just not sure. I've read some guides and it seems like it's a big commitiment and a lot of time to really be able to make money mining. Maybe it's better to just just focus on one profession?
I'd appreciate any advice.
thanks

start by finishing your training agent, that will give you a taster for missions. then start with a lvl 1 command or security (combat). Eventually you will end up in lvl 4 command tough missions and make plenty plenty of isk.

When does the game decide you are ready to take level II, III, or IV missions?

It never decides your ready. If you meet the requirments for a higher level agent, you can work for them. It doesnt mean you have the equipment and skills.
You can view all available agents on the map by showing your agents. A much better way is to Show Info on the corp you want to work for and go to the Agents Tab. This will show you all of the agents in the Corp and which ones you can work for. In addition it will show you agents you can not work for yet, and Show Info on them will tell you what standing you need to work for them. In general agents will let you work for them if either your standing to their corporation or factin is high enough. (Some agents especialy R&D require both faction and corp along with skills.)
Show Info is your Friend.
For Combat Missions, I suggest the following ships. This assumes you know how to fly them. Bump up one class if your not sure or to make it easier.
1) Frigates 2) Frigates, Cruisers help for the harder ones 3) Battlecruisers 4) Battleships
Note: AF and HAC's can do any level 1-3 mission. DDs can do some level 2 missions but I dont suggest them.

The game advances you to the next mission agent level when you've earned a high enough standing with that set of agents/corp.
More missions you do, the more standing you gain.
You can speed this up by training up a bunch of the social skills.

The game never advances you. You must choose to start working for the next level agent. They will not tell you when your ready to work for a new agent, or when a new agent becomes available. You have to keep an eye on this yourself. The only exceptins are of course important missions and your initial tutorial agent series.

diplomacy and connections seemed to help me get to level 2 missions much much faster.

Connections will help a huge amount. If you have connections 1-2 and do your newbie agent you can START at level 2.
Diplomacy wont have any effect unless your in negative standing. But connections, social, and negotations are all good skills for a mission runner to train up to 4ish.

I've heard you can make a killing by trading (buying and reselling items, like minerals for example). I suggest you buy a few gamecards and sell them for isk (its not against the EULA). This will get you a good amount of inital capital, all of which you can invest in whatever you want to trade. If you know what you're doing you can be rich pretty quickly.
However, if you don't want to buy a bunch of isk initially, i would go with NPC hunting. Mining will kill the game for you.

I have all Lvl III's available but that doesn't mean I can handle them.
Make sure you can take the heat before you start working for lvl II kill missions. A destroyer isn't gonna cut it. I'd say wait for a caracal and lvl II's will be a breeze. You can run 'em in a frigate, but they're tough.

I keep getting this one rescue mission. Only frigates can do it but yet you warp through an acceleration gate and your surrounded by 9 enemy ships its nuts. lol but ya the Missions are fun if you have the ship/skills to handle them if you get bored or lose your ship and cant replace it you can still get the low level missions to build back up your ISKs.
Think im going to keep my Eve account active I tried the 14 day free trial and am really enjoying the game so far.

I thought it was closer to 1) Frigates or Destroyers 2) Destroyers for the easy ones Cruisers for the harder 3) Battlecruiser or Battleship 4) A gang of Battleships.

1) All level 1s can be done in a frigate, pretty much. 2) Almost all can be done in a destroyer, the absolute hardest need a cruiser. 3) A battleship is overkill--an assault frigate or BC can do all of these. 4) Basically all can be soloed by a single battleship.

You can make a nice amount of money mining. Don't bother looking into the dedicated ships unless it's your one true passion, just try to get something that can mount many mining lasers at once, and a hauler to go with it.
Personally I prefer mining to missions, as the mindless repetetive actions required for mining are simpler and more infrequent than those needed for missions . ---------- Go here: http://www.student.ru.nl/martindevillers/tk8_outgame.html |
