Edited by: Sha Xian on 28/04/2006 08:32:38 Hoping you guys can help me. 3 of my corp mates and myself were out huting potential targets last night, when we came accross an outlaw in a system, we chased him to station where he docked, so we camped the station. 2 of his corp mates were there, but they weren't flashing red.
So the stilletto undocks and we try gank him before he can dock again, but with no luck. The something strange happens...
One of my corp mates says the enyo (the outlaws corp mate) is red and he is engaging. Next thing I know, he was poped by the sentries. We are all very confused right about now. Surely, if someone is red and you attack the sentries leave you alone? Then another corp mate pops for the same reason. Then a rifter undocks from the station and is red in my overview, but I can't seem to see him on my screen. I zoom in and out and swivel the screen around, but I can't see him. So I click look and the camera zooms to him... hrrmmm, he's not red on the screen, but in the overview, so I refresh the overview and he goes back to oranage. WTF?!?
Why in the world would he be red when he undocked? So the remaining corp mate who had ctd'ed warped back in and I ganged him. A couple secs later the stilleto undocks and I make sure he is outlaw again and then engage, but he docks again. Then my corp mate attacks the enyo (again) cause he says the guy is red, a couple sec's later he gets popped by the sentries.
I have fraps of the whole thing, which I will be uploading, but I messed up the encoding last night so I have to do it again this evening.
Anyone got any idea why someone would turn red on the overview for no apprent reason?
Thanks

Edited by: Sha Xian on 28/04/2006 08:36:32 I will be petitioning it as soon as I get the fraps right, I'll post it up here too, but was hoping someone could shed some light in the mean time.
BTW, I have been playing for over a year, I know about sentries and how they work, so I'm pretty sure I have the whole concept right.
Red == Can shoot without sentries firing,. Not Red == wtfpwned by sentries.

Aye, which is why I didn't attack the rifter, but my corp mates might have been a little over zealous.

I've never experienced this bug before last night and I find it a little strange that it happened 3 times, with the same ship with diffrent corp mates in a row. I mean, is there some way to induce going red in the overview?

No, but they no doubt knew you would fall for it...it is one of the most reliable bugs in Eve.

I never set background colors on my overview for that reason, the small icons seem to be allright all the time.

I've seen this happening with an ore thief once. He managed to get away from me and dock at a station. A good while later(long after the 15 minutes timer) he undocked and appeared as flashing red on the overview. I decided to give it a try and shoot him, but I got the "dangerous act" warning so I left him alone. After hitting tab twice he wasn't blinking anymore.
This was one of my cheap lessons in eve: Always update overview before shooting people in empire space.
I'm sorry to hear your friends had to learn it the more expensive way.

it's not sacarstic, snowball made the guy flashing red, but with no agrression flag so you attack him and get podded by concord or sentry

probably just overview bug, My geddon went down to an agreed 3 on 1 (they had lesser ships, 1 Hac, Bc, Cr). I foolishly engaged at a gate on what on my screen was their one red pilot Urrrr he wasn't Sentry's bbq'd me
And id been warping in and back to the gate while the 3 in question where attacking a corp m8 so i figured one had agro'd on me... Obviously they didn't
Cant be assed to petition... whats the point. "our imaginary logs dont show blah blah blah"
Live and learn, Dont fire back untill a hit report shows on your screen

God I hate that overview bug. "Just one guy but he's friendly" *BOOM*. And then there's the corpmates showing as enemies, that one would get me in trouble if my corp wasn't so small that I don't mistake their names for others. As someone else said, while you're locking, it's prudent to refresh the overview. To do this, hit the tab key two or three times. It'll contract and then re-expand the overview, reloading the info.

Yeah, I know about refreshing it. I'm hoping the fraps might help with my corp mates petetion. Seeing as I didn't get blown up, I can't petetion. So it's up to them

AFAIK, they usually ignore fraps as there are some pretty skilled digital video editors in eve so it's not really evidence. They can't verify this one sever-side as its a client bug so don't be too upset if you dn't get reimbursed. It's up the the GMs, I guess, but I've definitely seen them ignore video footage and screenshots as not proof.

Maybe that is a reason to enable the "Do you want to proceed?" warning... afaik that one has never failed.

Doesn't that go off when attacking war targets too, though?

Edited by: Snake Jankins on 28/04/2006 11:26:37 Yes, overview bugs from time to time and you have to close and re-open it to get it right. I use always the small symbols in addition to the background colour.
But sometimes the whole display is bugged and shows concorde or a planet marked as a corp member. Quite funny.
About 2 weeks ago when the members of our fleet arrived at a gate, I had an eagle next to me and the small symbol and the background colour marked him as war target. I put my scrambler on him and then I looked twice, because an enemy eagle in the middle of us made no sense. I was the only one who approached and he just stood there. Was indeed a member of our own gang. ___________ 'Only ships can be assembled, this is a Frigate.' |

Edited by: Shidhe on 28/04/2006 11:29:35 The warning still applies to war targets - it would be useful to be able to switch it off selectively. The overview is quite buggy ATM - the colours can never be relied on - gangs and allies also become confused... Also the ranges in the overview freeze sometimes - have almost lost a ship to that one - and that is not solved by closing and reopening the overview - you need to relog.

I generally keep this on, specialy when I have war targets. Every tried targeting a war target on a gate in Jita? Saved my ass plenty a time when accidently targeting a neutral instead of war target.

We need an overview filter for neutrals
For me the dialog window is no option. If you have to answer the question, if I want to proceed, then you either end in a pod in an ceptor vs. ceptor engagement or the target warps away, before you get a scrambler on him.
edit: Anyway, avoid using ctrl mouseclick to target in empire and don't target with activated weapons. Besides the risk to shoot a neutral, if there is an object behind the overview, targeting with ctrl mouseclick selects the target behind the overview and NOT the row in the overview. E.g. if the box of the station is behind the overview, you target the station. ___________ 'Only ships can be assembled, this is a Frigate.' |
