I suppose you know about it? Otherwise I will do what I can to help... EVE can use 350+ MBs of memory in less than FOURTY MINUTES of playing. Very unacceptable, it began yesterday for some reason.

... Yeah, 'tis started a few Chaos builds ago. I have 512mb and after few jumps the HD led is constantly lit as the drive shuffles data to and from virtual memory... it's quite likely THE reason why the new build crashes on me every hour or so without any notice.... while it'd literally never do that before... :/

Using WinXp and got 113MB used after fresh reboot. After one hour of play my disc was acting funny. After two hours I saw why. 829MB memory in use.
New record?

I agree, there is something new goin on with the cache in the game as far as I know, or have experienced.
I can understand the new halts near gates, when the game fetches the random showing bounty pictures on the billboards, but otherwise I cannot understand why it in empty space starts to eat harddrive like mad for apparently no reason at all. Before last night I had a smooth game, sure the UI takes up alot of power, it is noticed when you hide it as only then do I now get a smooth game, but as I need it up all the time to utilize it the game is sometimes unplayable to the brink of insanity. Even after a fresh reboot/relog, I warp to nearest belt to get some mining going and I check info on a roid and the game just goes nuts, it halts for 30 seconds while I hear my harddrive just workin overtime, and all I got as a result was the infopanel on the roid, seems it has major trouble getting the window to pop up, this happens ALL the time now. So after a half an hour in a belt I just cant stand it no more. Opening a window or checking your People&Places or browser or anything just kills the game now. Cache cleared, settings at low, nothing seems to work, it still dives to a smashing 4 FPS - and I got a pretty decent rig:
P4 1.7Ghz, 256mb ddr, GeForce 4 MX440 64 MB using 8x AGP, ASUS P4XP-X using 533mhz FSB, 1 Mbit cable.
I would say there is defenatly something wrong with the UI in this patch, if I clear it out using CTRL-TAB or CTRL-F9 it runs smooth, bringing it back just KILLS the entire game performance to unplayability.
My 2 cents.... ************ I love Ore! ************ |

Edited by: Drutort on 19/09/2003 10:41:35 Edited by: Drutort on 19/09/2003 10:40:23 OMG BIG ERROR!!
EVE went from normal of 300mb spawn in just like a min or so to 530... then to 650.. or so... THEN DEAD
and my 256mb of RAM was only filled with 100mb or less... hmmm something is wrong here... the os takes up only at times like 50-100mb i think not sure but when running a full load process APP the other APP's give up the ram so the game should have a lot more i know i had it up to 200mb used by an app that is RAM not swap...
then i got run time error.. and said that there was an error to the virtual call... DUH im out of SWAP
can you say MEM LEAK????
NEVER EVER HAPPEND IN ANY OTHER PATCH...
good thing i was just chating and docked in station
btw this was in windowed mode... support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

Try using a mem clearing/defrag tool, it works fine for me here, just press a few buttons and the program will free up the mem.
I know that this is not a way to run a game, but its the only solution i can think of untill ccp fix the mem leak bugs. - Skorp, Commander (CEO) The Wolf Brigade |

Same with me , i use Win 2k and got 256 Ram then i have set about 5G of HD space to be used as virtual memory , Still aftera few minutes playing i get the win2k error msg "Virtual Memory to low".
and CCP claims there is no memory leak... alove me to
Now i have to concider sell my account on ebay and prepare for either WoW or SwG.

For every two bugs CCP fixes they put in 1 bug back that was fixed, 1 completely new bug out of the blue, and 1 unwanted UI alteration.
Very annoying....

Yup, I'm getting this too. I run two accounts simultaneously, and until this patch I never even heard the HD cache at all, just 512 MB of DDR playing nice with my Athlon. Now, my big ole HD is working hard. I agree with other posters that chats seem to be part of the problem. An option to wipe corp chat and local chat would help I think.

Edited by: Johnson McCrae on 19/09/2003 16:57:35 I have 512megs, and dont have much trouble with this so called 'leak'.
Could be because I dont HAVE Virtual Memory turned on?
VM is a waste of CPU to me. Eve doesn't mind, and even AO, which is a massive memory hog, works fine.
Try shutting it off and see if it makes a difference.
ps. BTW, I run Win98SE with a 1.4ghz thunderchicken. It ain't over till the fat lady falls on ya!

Heh, Eve leaks memory faster than it uses the network bandwidth :)
Network is (supposed to be) capped to 56kbit server side, memory leakage is much higher.

why not use more of my ram and my video ram!!! i have 128mb of video mem why isnt it being used???

I haven't seen memory leaks this bad since unpaid beta... my all time record is 1.2GB allocated (I had 256MB of physical ram at the time)...
Gotta wonder... do the devs actually play Eve? How the heck did such a memory leak get let out into retail? |

You can't use video memory for code pages, they're different subsystems.
Additionally, if it's using 300Mb of virtual memory, that's actually good - it means there's a lot of code pages that haven't been used in a while, and Windows has been smart enough to swap them out onto disk. Better than it using 400Mb of real memory.

Oy! I been complaining in multiple posts tonight about the mem leak, but the I actually got myself to try turning OFF Virtual memory in WinXP. I only got 256 MB DDR RAM but I thought "Hey, what can go wrong?" So I disabled windows virtual memory, rebooted, fire up game and whatayaknow. For some surprisingly happy reason all the choppyness, loading, adding, hairpulling madness I had before is GONE!
Sure I see my Task Manager and it is on the last few MB of ram right now, but I done a few jumps, docks, etc and it works good, so damn good actually that Im gonna keep it like this.
People, try it, disable Windows Virtual memory, run game, see if it is any different to you.
I run on a: ASUS P4XP-X using 533Mhz FSB P4 1.7 Ghz 256 MB DDR RAM GeForce 4 MX 440 64MB using AGP x8 (latest Detonator)

so you guys saying that even with 256mb you run the game fine without the swap???
hmm i might have to try that...
a better thing would be is to disable the GAME from using SWAP and let your OS use swap support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

I think most ppl have those UBER PC's and thats why they would need to play really long before there 1gb of ram and who konws what would be used up!!
they need real ppl with PC's that are a bit out of date to do more tests on this game and FOR FEW HOURS not just some 30 min ok it seems to be working type of deal!! support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

I think they might have fixed the old mem leak.. At least a little bit...
I can make 30 jumps and still load up coming out of warp just fine.
The problem I have NOW is chat.. It's like the buffer never gets cleared and everything that's typed in chat adds up and next thing you know, the game gets choppy, load-in warp bubbles take forever, Starjumps take forever. Blah blah blah.
It's something to do with chat..
I can not go to the Trade channel no more.. 2 minutes in that channel and the game becomes unplayable. It hangs for a split second every time someone says something. And it takes forever to load anything else, including the desktop.
I can not go help people in the Help channel anymore.. About five minutes in that room and the same thing happens.
But if I stay out of the busy chat rooms, and not many people chat on local, I have no problems.
But still.. It's unacceptable to be bound to only the Local and Corp channel forever.

Well, I doubt that most of the current 464MBs of mem usage (of the EVE process, of course) is chat text
