This is a good topic so iGÇÖll throw my two pennies worth in.
My best mate was playing freelancer at the time and spotted an advert for eve and thought iGÇÖd like it, well he was right. Nine years later iGÇÖm still on it every day that I can and saw right from the start that mining and industry was the way ahead for me. He went down the ratting/missioning route with his toon however I quickly realized that you can make more isk with more than one toon and a lot more with four.
A lot of people think of this game as solely a space combat simulator, well it isnGÇÖt. Eve for me is about the people you fly with. I made new friends quickly with a corp I randomly joined, however none of these guys play anymore so after a long time in high sec and low sec dipping my toes into owning my own moon mining POSGÇÖs (and no I didnGÇÖt make much isk from that) I decided to try out 0.0. To be honest I think I was over cautious about null sec space and was terrified of losing my ships in combat I didnGÇÖt understand. What I should have done was to follow the advice I now see on the forums (which wasnGÇÖt around at the time), taken an interceptor out to 0.0 and had some fun tackling whist still getting my mining fix in low sec with my other toons.
In 2007, Oberon Inc was good enough to accept me and I moved my carrier down to Esoteria and started getting into the 0.0 way of life. I thought at the time that the further away from empire you are the quieter it would be. What a noob  . Legion of XXX death showed me how not to fly a ratting BS by regularly killing me to the point where I was getting pretty fed up with GÇ£CreamsterGÇ¥ and his gang. The mining in Esoteria was pretty good with me making regular trips back to empire with an Iteron 5 full of ore in my carrier ship maint bay. (thanks CCP for changing that) . But after BOB came along and booted us out of Esoteria, (ShrikeGÇÖs Avatar was the most impressive thing I had ever seen in the game at that point) I decided to return to empire and try my hand at ice mining. My plan was to get enough isk together to get a mothership. The plan worked eventually but god it takes a long time to get 19 bill together just ice mining, building and ratting. Before I got my Aeon I found a corp that was full of the guys I still fly with today, we had some fun the highlight for me was when we joined Ushra'Khan and flew in matari fleets only. Being part of the UK and AAA matari super fleet take down the last CVA held system in Providence was brilliant. Shame UK fell apart and lost providence after that but thatGÇÖs spies for you.
Finally we have a guy in our corp out in 0.0 with us who has 3 million SPGÇÖs. HeGÇÖs the first into a ship when our systems need defending and probably the most bloodthirsty of all of us (ok perhaps there are others). As an older player now I spend a lot of time helping out my corp and alliance members. You will find the decent guys do. So if youGÇÖre fairly new the game, get out to 0.0 early. You will die, you will die a lot but its bloody fun.
