Ok, here is one for the L33t geekoid comunity. Apparently in my old age <ahem> i have fallen short of keeping up with the jargon that makes posting on forums for the young wippa snappers Ohhh so much fun.
Okay so can people give me a list and explanation of all the groovy little acronyms.
AFAIK = ? and so on. Feel free to make some up.

...also what does this crap mean about being "owned"? It sounds so lame. It reminds me of whiney, geeky 14year old american teenagers, which is not a pleasant thought at the best of times. And also, I don't get this thing of substituting numbers for letters, eg m3g4 - are they dyslexic or something?

The word "lol" is the only one I use. How are you going to tell someone that you are laughing other then, "HAHAHAHA" which looks stupid. To the other people who do things like, "I hav 2 go 2 c if u r there" then learn to type faster.

Emotes are quite common in the online gaming community, if the chat doesnt suppurt any, then like *grins evilly*
The absence of lol generally makes a chat channel far more enjoyable in my humble opinion (seeing several lines of nothing but those 3 letters after some joke still looks quite lame for me, though i should be used to it after the years ;), albeit i and many others tolerate it even in more roleplayed channels cause not everybody has the |_33»|» typing skills to quickly react with an emote, while shaken by laughter. *winks*

This is the first thread I've even remotely felt like posting in since the patch.
1337-speak is the result of a community of percieved elites twisting standard language in an attempt to isolate themselves from the "lesser" types. It is more of a cant than a slang. ------------------------------------------- "My main griveance with the Caldari state was that once I had finished my work for them, they wanted me dead."

Dreadful. The word is spelt with a "u" and you don't say "it" when describing a person. And what has slang got to do with it.

My favorite is LOL, ROFL et al. There's a certain inflation to these expressions, as in my experience most people put LOL in not to mean "in RL I'm really laughing out loud", but rather anything from "that's hilarious", to "that's mildly amusing", to "you're dumb I'm laughing at you", to "if this was RL I'd smile and fake a chuckle to be polite". Similarly I've only really ROFLed once in RL from anything I read in a chat or forum, and that was years ago, but I continue to use that to say something like "That was really quite funny, I actually did audibly laugh in RL". Really what LOL was originally meant, I think.
I think the lack of true emotional expression (ie. real faces, tones of voice, etc.) is leading to some kinda inflation in expression. Much like people now saying "STFU MF, I'm gonna kill you and stuff your arm down your throat you homo", when in fact all they're really saying is what 10 years ago would have been expressed as "F*&k off dude, you are such a loser", and 20 years ago by "shut up!". None are polite, but the expressions of displeasure, disapproval, etc. are getting more and more extreme well past the point of ridiculous. Also, it seems to take a lot more effort in words and thought

Edited by: Larana on 19/09/2003 17:19:48 Edited by: Larana on 19/09/2003 17:18:13 I was alwasy told leet speek was originaly formed in Half Life {counter strike}. Used in local or open chat to try to confuse your foe, it helped a few clans I know, pull off some very nice tricks, A deeper Leet speek of sorts was formed later in SOF n SOFII, but that was a combnation of military terms and leet, for those who used to play SOF or SOF II you might know what im talking about. KEY WORDS for those who dont know what SOF or SOFII is. Soldier Of Fortune Soldier Of Fortune 2
Example of SOF/II Coded message 1200-4lph4,Ch4rli3-0-500 Translation 1200: simple Alpha was used to mean: Next target was moving in stated direction. Charlie: was in our case used as a signal for a friendly which was a reverse of Military charlie meaning foe. 0: was if they were moving or not or if Alpha was moving but Charlie wasnt it would have been 1200-4lph4,Ch4rli3-1-0-500 500: was where you spotter was in in oposition to Alpha.
This was used for Sniper direction, and you can see the information contained in a simple code, thougth complex, can be typed fast enought to get a heads up, when anyone read these kind of messages in Open Chat or Local they were baffeled as to it's meaning, thougth using Leet in Eve impo is kind of pointless cause it's not always first to shoot wins, or one shot kills.
"often the best way to confuse your foe is to be completly honest" |
