Guys, WhiteDwarf is upset. There is no need to flame him. If you cannot/willnot entertain his argument in a civilized manner, and simply shout "carebear," I suggest not participating in the discussion. I can see past his emotional outbursts to what he feels is a problem - I will try to elaborate based on my interpretation:
EVE has great potential. EVE's open PK system (non-level based) is usually only found in ROLEPLAYING games where there are severe death penalties and appropriately severe penalties for killing. These games also traditionally have a strict roleplay enforcement system to ensure griefers do not ruin the game atmosphere.
The designers/developers obviously aren't familiar with the extreme level of depravity in other countries (and perhaps within their own) when deciding on using this PK system - some people really want to hurt, maim, kill and disrupt gameplay regardless of the theme of the game. You can find these types of people in ANY multiplayer game.
These players usually cling to some part of the game rules to justify their actions - while at the same time admitting to finding the game "boring" and anyone who doesn't like to be bothered by "lamers" (or in this case "carebears"). When proper roleplaying guidelines are enforced, these players are very less obvious and do not distrupt gameplay.. when such rules are not in place, some people will always find some exploits in the game to intentionally upset other players.
Or, they become those 'leet PK psychos that are obsessed with the highest damage possible, and seek out any potential target to demonstrat their mastery of killing, no matter how unbalanced the fight. Don't know if you've ever played a Godwars MUD (very juvenile PK flavour of a game), you may see some disturbing similarities to EVE. Unlike other MUD builds/models like Diku/Envy, there are no level limitations or options to be PK registered or not - everyone is a target no matter what level differential. There are also "safe" areas similar to high-sec space.
The Godwars type of MUDs are actually limited to a single type of player - the PK enthusiast. Roleplayers cannot function in such an environment. There are so, so many parallels between such a MUD PK system and EVE's.. and I worry the whole Roleplaying element of the game will eventually drown in pointless playerkilling.
For thos who don't know: MUD = Multi-User Domain (or Dungeon) and are text-based games.
