"We're very excited for our friends and colleagues at Oculus," David Reid, CCP Games' CMO told us. "We share their vision about the future of VR and gaming and are looking forward to participating in the consumer launch of the Oculus Rift with EVE: Valkyrie.""
Makes yea feel better about the game now I bet!

So people should be forced to get a PS4 just to play a non-facebook infested version of the game?

Im pretty sure CCP isnt going to let facebook ruin its next major game just because it is going to own ONE of the consoles that the game is meant to be played on. I too am apprehensive about oculus being baught by facebook but as of right now they appear to still be focused on gaming so dont write them out till we get to see what really comes out of this. And im sure other companies are developing VR headsets for the pc that you will be able to use. |

I will definitely buy a PS4 sonner or later but definitely not a VR now that it is FB. So it would make sense to have an alternative for playing EVR. |

No.. i'm pointing out that you and others are not all the bright in this aspect when you say that just because the rift is owned by facebook that it will ruin ccp's game. The fact remains, 1) all the games on facebook are.. NOT MADE BY FACEBOOK. Another company makes the games, NOT facebook. And two, do you really think CCP will make Valk have ads and crap popping up in your face? or that FB will tell CCP how to adjust there game?
Logic people, use it. Facebook doesn't own CCP, this is like complaining because CCP wants to make a mobile ap for iphones that because its on the iphone apple will screw the game up. Odd's are the Rift will be run just like yoru damn phone, you will go to the facebook marketplace for VR, which will have ads and crap. Buy your game from there, then you don't need to deal with the VR market place until you want another game.
All this hubbub is stupid.

Yes, because the PC version will be facebook "infested". Really? Listen to yourself, you make conspiracy theorists sound sane!

Everyone is freaking out about this acquisition. Does it suck that a company with Facebook's reputation bought it yup. Are the development team members going to have a massive bank roll to put better quality in? Yup.
I'm going to play the wait and see game here because from what some of the folks at Oculus have said thus far it might not be AS bad as people are tinfoilling it. Either way no amount of folks asking for refunds or people bitching at Oculus selling to Facebook is going to change the fact the deal is done, so let the dev team continue to work on it and we can see what the product is like before completely damning it. Facebook is not a hardware company, this is from Mark's own mouth.
Facebook only makes money by ads and data mining and selling.
So what does that leave OR at to make the 2 billion back and more? Ads and data mining.
Facebook is a public company, they have make that money back. |

After sleeping on it, this has become my position as well. And it seems the general backlash is already subsiding as quickly as it exploded.
There's absolutely no harm in playing the "wait and see" game at this point. If it turns out that I need a Facebook to use the Rift or play Valkyrie, then that's where I'll back out. I was ready to hand over my money on launch day, but now I'm more willing to hold off and see how things pan out post-launch. If I don't like what I see then I'll happily spend my money elsewhere.

"Moron" is not understanding the discussion.
No one is saying FB is taking over the world, they are disappointed that FB stuck it's ugly non-inspiring hands into something with huge potential. It's like getting the chance to make love to the girl of your dreams, only to realize the class douche already gave her herpes. No Thanks.
Besides, if Valk is for the PS4 - Sony is developing it's own VR platform. To damnations with Oculus.

The Oculus won't be the only contender for displays by the time this is read to ship. There are over a half dozen other options coming out and some of them are being designed for options that the oculus hasn't been dealing with yet (due to funding).
The technologies underpinning the Oculus are not proprietary to that device - they've existed for decades and far more advanced versions are already in use by the military - check out info on the F35's HUD - pilots can even look straight between their own legs to see what's below their craft... So on and so forth.
So all you're angry about is that the oculus is the best known and in the most stable version right now - even though it too is not ready for shipping as a commercial product?
No big deal. This will change; just like you have a variety of options on game controllers and monitors for computers, by dozens of different vendors, this too will have a variety of vendors by the time this game is ready. |

Oculus is hardly groundbreaking technology. It is only through development in cellphone technology that they have the small compact 720p and 1080p screens to make the device compact and affordable. The rest of the technology is supposed to be straight forward. Considering the buzz being made by a product not even near market... If it goes **** up, then their will be others to pick up the baton and run to market with it. The fact facebook owns the company doesn't have anything to do with the device's potential, accept when it comes to how the marketing for the product might get done. |

That facebook owns oculus now makes a big difference. The DK2 will come with, as you said, the cellphone screens. But with the money facebook has they are no longer depending on the cellphone technology.
I doubt using the oculus will need a facebook account, ever. They will probably make some virtual social stuff, but people can still play games without any fb stuff. |

Zuckerberg tried out the Sony VR headset prior to purchasing OVR. In an interview, Sony actually stated that they wished Facebook would have chosen to buy theirs instead of the Oculus.
Reason being every other VR device up until now has failed, and primarily because it has been confined to gaming. Sony felt that with Facebook at the helm, a VR device actually has a much better chance of succeeding. Not only due to the fact that the focus isn't only on gaming, or the money, but because of the fact that Facebook has its hands in everything already.
As a side note, nothing has really changed since the Facebook acquisition, outside of the fact that OVR received a massive cash infusion. The Oculus is still going to be sold at cost, development continues without Facebook sticking their noses into it.
Nearly 45 thousand DK's were ordered, and thats after current sales were banned and future cancelled to China due to the reseller problem. The number also is after the people who cancelled those orders once Facebook became involved. Granted, not all 45 thousand units are going to developers, and we know a good number of them were purchased by enthusiasts. But that still leaves a good number in the hands of developers, working their asses off to have their software, games, etc. finished by the time the consumer model goes retail.
It really is an exciting time for VR in my opinion, and better yet, it will be accessible, as well as affordable.
I finally received my DK2 tracking number, so I'm excited just to play around with it a bit before going back to working on my project. ;)

It really is an exciting time for VR in my opinion, and better yet, it will be accessible, as well as affordable. Not to mention that it's just awesome. Until you've actually had a headset on yourself, it's very difficult to explain what it is like. It isn't just a few screens in front of your eyes. You actually are tempted to reach out and try to grab things due to the way the whole natural 3d effect works. In currently supported games, like war thunder, your stomach actually feels like its dropping out when you go into a dive the same way as it would in a real life fighter dipping and diving. And yet, you aren't moving at all. But for some reason, it sure as hell feels like you are. It's almost kind of freaky. This is also why some people are actually experiencing quite a bit of Nausea when using it.
I finally received my DK2 tracking number, so I'm excited just to play around with it a bit before going back to working on my project. ;) Looking forward to seeing the improvements over the DK1 that I keep hearing about.

To be fair. FB has also worked pretty hard to make the conspiracy theorists sound sane of late. I would have laughed pretty hard at someone that suggested they'd perform psychological experiments on their user base by making half of them feel like **** and seeing what happens. In this case though I'd have been the one that needed a reality check.
The occulus is going to require a driver that is bound to be made by the company who owns and developed the device. Are they going to program it to send subliminal messages every 10 frames or whatever? Perhaps they'll send subliminal pictures of mutilated babies to see if they can create psychopaths through visual brain state manipulation. You know, or maybe they'll just implant an overwhelming urge to buy a coke. Seems pretty insane to suggest it, but the reality of our lives relating to tech has been pretty damn insane and seemingly getting more and more so, with FB being at the forefront edge pushing that insanity further and further.
There's actually a lot of really f'd up stuff they could do without CCP's involvement. |
