They used to be when they moved to Eve from E&B.
There was a large influx of players when E&B went ****-up and they tended to all join the same corps which given the server population of the time made them pretty much instantly "influential" as there weren't that many corps who could field a couple of hundred players. Some corps (the ones who didn't think pvp was "griefing") went on to do well and others declined - TTI was one of the losers.

I've gotten some excellent, detailed practical advice in Rookie Help. There are some vet regulars in there who are very helpful. You just have to get past the trolls. Actually it's a good place your Anti-Troll Comebacks skill points up-- you're going to need those throughout your EVE career. |

Hmmm this could well be the problem.
When I start an alt or was between corps I found myself helping in the NPC corp chat more often.
Maybe it's time for an actual "Ask the Bitter Vet" chat. Good advice to be had (if you are not ready to hang yourself after getting it).
OK just kidding.

I've actually found the rookie channel to be quite helpful (and friendly) during my stay there. There were many people willing to assist and try to keep up with the very fast rate of questions. Sure there was the occasional drought in answers, the occasional troll or spammer (eventually dealt with by an ISD volunteer), but overall it was quite useful. I myself answered hundred of questions once I knew my way around EVE basics, and I was a bit sad to be kicked out of the channel after my first month was over.
In contrast, trying to get any help from specialized channels has typically been a waste of my time. People too busy showing off and posing. |

Wow.. a whole lot of wild speculation in this topic.
Everything ranging from "I'm not a new player" to "I'm trying to steal a corporation".
Pro-tip: read the first post thoroughly before posting gibberish.
The corporation I wanted to obtain shares in is newly started by a real life friend, who has been bugging me to join Eve for years. My wife and I decided we'd give it a shot, so here we are. My reason for obtaining shares? To invest in the corporation. The CEO is the very same friend who invited my wife and I to this game -- who also intends to make me a Director once I have a better grasp on the game. So no, I don't intend to "take over".
Bottom line, this topic has nothing to do with my background or the dimwitted character assassination attempts by some of you. I commented on the general toxicity of Rookie Help, nothing more.. nothing less.
I apologize if an opinionated topic is somehow offensive. Last I checked, that's what forums are to be used for. |

Rookie help is actually pretty good, if you ask rookie questions.
Questions about corp shares isn't in the scope of what they are there for.
Actually the answer about "scam, they're not worth it" was accurate.

Double Quoted for Truth.
Welcome to EVE OP o/
It is important to understand that this is a long game in terms of your characters evolution. Through the Tutorials, you will have to experiment to develop your play-style. Will you specialize, as most will recommend to do one thing expertly of will you go for broad training (As I recommend - Fly Every Tech 1/2/3 ship, market, mine, transport & scan). You can always change your mind and try something new as time moves forward.
Once that's done, it's time to find a corp that jives with your style. Take you time and vet the corps just as much as they vet you. Keep your connections strong, but don't be afraid to burn a bridge or two along the way.
Keep it in the game. Ganking/scamming/griefing are all part of the game, but DO NOT take it out the game. The community/CCP will school you if you do.
In the beginning, Trust No One There are bitter, hateful capsuleers who have nothing left after a decade of play than to make you rage & cry. Nothing in this game is free or safe Keep you wits about your and always ask, what's this player's angle? Half the time, they will help. The other half.........
Don't rush to get the next best ship. By the time you fly cruisers, you should be able to fit tech 2 defensive modules. By the time you move up to Battleships, you should be able to straight fit all tech 2 modules.
Don't carry all you stuff in one ship....EVER. What is lost is lost.
There's more, but for now, fly safe and see you among the stars. |

Here I'm going to bust your virtual bubble.
You do NOT need shares to invest in a corp nor are they used like real life shares where you get money from owning them.
Anybody can give money to any corporation in EVE. Shares are only used for certain votes (examples: Lockdown / Unlock blueprints or who will be CEO). Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Actually, the CEO has plans to pay dividends on manufacturing jobs to those who own shares in the corporation.
Others may do it differently, but this is a friend that I've known in real life for many years. Why are some of you so adamant about how shares allegedly do or do not work, when I'm telling you how my CEO intends to make them work?
If anything, the responses here prove that posters are more inclined to offer an unwanted opinion than an actual answer. |

OP, you received some valuable information in this thread. Chief among them was one pertaining to your immediate concern:
Bethan Le Troix wrote:
Corporation shares are usually used in EVE to destroy or take over a corp which is why you received the bad karma. It is best not to touch the corp shares at all or for the CEO to keep a tight hold onto all of them.
Now, just because you don't like the answer and/or it doesn't benefit what your RL friend (who none of us know), does not mean you should begin to berate the posters in this thread. This is GD if people think you are being rude or flippant with their genuine attempts to help, the will turn full troll.
As mentioned before Corp shares are usually kept very tight by a CEO as they dictate control of the corporation. The only real reason a CEO would offer shares would be as an incentive to get some type of investment into the corp. That being said a Corp that offers shares too freely, I would be wary of. There is too much of a risk of AWOX/Failure/Loss that can be damaging to the corp and its members. Also, owning shares tend to equate to more responsibility. If that's you thing and you two are tight and you like that then go for it!
Personally, I keep it simple. I do the thing, you give me the Isk |

Never mind how quickly questions are buried in Rookie Help, I can tolerate having to pose the question a few times until it's addressed. My concern is that apathetic approach the (moderators?) take to controlling the channel in regards to trolls and useless responses.
Case and point: I posed a question about obtaining shares in my corporation. It's owned and controlled by a real life friend who is currently unavailable for me to ask him how to go about doing it. Instead of getting an informative response, I received something to the effect of "it's a scam, they're not worth it, they're not what you think they are".
Not only was the "answer" not relevant to what I asked, but it was nothing short of an ignorant opinion line that didn't offer anything of substance. I replied with "I didn't ask for an opinion, I asked for directions on obtaining them". Moments later a bounty was placed on my head by the player who apparently didn't like that I didn't care for his opinion.
How is this anything but a deterrent to continue playing? I only tried to seek a simple answer as the Wiki contains zero information on obtaining shares, and wind up having a bounty and still no answer.
Bottom line, I never knew that the rumored toxic nature of this community was really so bad that new players are trolled and harassed in Rookie Help. I get told on a nearly daily basis that the NPC corp I'm in is more helpful then the rookie chat. That's why I left a character in one. Just for the sole purpose of helping newbies out. |

The point you fail to see here, is that despite outlining that the corporation is under the control of a personal friend, I've received several responses insinuating that I have malevolent intentions, or responses telling me to forget about shares.
If I call a car dealership and ask them what the color of the floor mat is in a car I may be interested in buying, do you think for a second they'll say "it's not important" or "you must be thinking of stealing it"?
The Wiki outlines what shares are for, not how to obtain them. The CEO (my friend) asked if I wanted to invest a bit of money back into the corporation when I mentioned donating to it, and explained that any shares I own will earn a return investment as the corporation expands and produces. I didn't post in the Rookie Help channel (or any other channel) for opinions; a simple "he needs to hand them out to you himself" would have sufficed.
Even more dumbfounding is that I never opened this topic to ask for help, I had the answer well before I posted it. This topic was created solely to offer my opinion on my perceived value of Rookie Help and how much of a deterrent it likely serves for other players who shared similar experiences. Instead, an overwhelming majority of the responses here have been ridicule and dictation of how I should play the game.

Instead, an overwhelming majority of the responses here have been ridicule and dictation of how I should play the game. You based your statement on your experience in regards to your question about shares, though. And to my experience, shares are one of the features in the game, that are of no real use for the majority of players. Due to this, experience with shares is limited. And it may happen that reading "shares" in a question triggers an "they're useless" answer. It's true that the rookie help channel suffers from being populated by mostly rookies, plus secondary accounts that are stuck in there due to the account's age. Some of those belong to players more experienced with eve. And few of those may spend part of their time answering questions in that channel. Even though it tends to scroll as fast as the credits of a daily soap. GMs and ISDs are in there as well, but even fewer and not all the time. All accounts older than 30 days are (by normal means) locked out of that channel. Aura's tutorials point to the Help channels for other languages, but only when the client is set to a language different than english. This is something CCP should consider to add to the default client setting. The English language Help channel (not rookie help) raises the chance to receive a more satisfying answer.
Joining a player corporation and doing some research on your own (there's that new players FAQ pdf, the evelopedia search field in the client's help window etc.) certainly is an option too. But those are advanced strategies. EVE Infolinks -+-áOld and new-áPortraits |

Nothing offered in this topic was "guidance". Opinions were offered that shares are only used for malevolent purposes, which I debunked (for my particular scenario). Suggestions were offered to avoid using them, which I deflected as they have a real purpose in my particular scenario -- one that is risk free and legitimate.
The alleged "guidance" was really a whole lot of trolling, misleading information, and attacks on my character for my choice to use shares in a corporation controlled by a real life friend. How many more times must I reiterate that?
At this point, it's become clear that this topic is an enormous waste of my time going forward (as is conversing with much of this community).
